BuyerDaniel van den Bremde tot Someren.
Buyer FamilyBremde(n), Daniel van den
Buyer NotesThe painter Daniel van den Bremden, born in Antwerp in 1587, was the son of Jeremias van den Bremden and Maeycken Deyns, who moved from Middelburg to Amsterdam about 1596. Maeycken Deyns's sister was married to Hans de Decker, the father of Abraham de Decker of R 33003. Daniel van den Bremden was the pupil of Barend van Someren of R 20424. He was active in Amsterdam from 1612 to 1663 (Briels, Vlaamse schilders, p. 306). On 23 July 1610, Daniel van den Bremden, painter, was authorized by the Orphan Chamber to use money he had inherited from his father Jeremias van den Bremden, pastry baker, to undertake a trip to Italy for the furtherance of his craft. He remained in Italy until 1611 (Briels, ibid.) On 18 February 1612, Daniel van den Bremden, from Antwerp, painter, 25 years old, living in the Nes, assisted by Hans Haelbos and Abraham de Decker (of R 33003), his guardians, was betrothed in Amsterdam to Susanna Schrevels, 22, assisted by her stepmother Anneken Hagens (DTB 416/102). Susanna Schrevels was the sister of Maria Schrevels, cited in the NOTES to R 25236. Hans Haelbos, widower of Susanna de Vries, was betrothed to Geertruit van den Bremden on 1 March 1601(DTB 409/341). On 11 October 1615, Daniel van den Bremden and Susanna Schrevels had their daughter Susanna baptized in the presence of Pieter Elekaert and Kataryn van Doesburch (Oud Holland, 3 (1885), p. 71.) Pieter Elekaert, from Naarden, merchant on the O.Z. Achterburchwal, was married to Jannetje Jans. He died in 1619. He was the father of Clara Elecaert, who married Hans Ruttens, jeweler. Hans Ruttens, born in Brussels about 1588 (Nederlandsche Leeuw 80(1963), col. 473). Maria Ruttens, the daughter of Hans Ruttens and Clara Elekaert, married Arnold de Vlaming van Oudtshoorn in Batavia in May 1641 (Nederlandsche Leeuw 74(1657), col. 206, and Elias, Vroedschap, p. 229). On 14 February 1617, Daniel van den Bremden, husband and guardian of Susanna Schreve(l), received an inheritance from Hans Schreve(l), his father-in-law living in Antwerp (Bredius in Obreen's Archief voor de Nederlandsche kunstgeschiedenis 7(1888-1890), p. 262). After the death of Susanna, Daniel van den Bremden was betrothed to Suster Orbons on 16 July 1622 (427/100). He bought lots for 1 f. 16 st. in the lottery of 1606, at which time he was living in de Witte Haes in the Nes, as was his brother Abraham van den Bremden (GAA, 22/57 F 158). He later lived on the Bloemstraet (Jaarboek Amstelodamum 54(1962), p. 98). The painter Abraham van den Bremden, born in Middelburgh, was 26 years old, on 27 September 1614 when he was betrothed to Susanna Smissaert, widow of Francois Hustaer(t), assisted by her father Jan Smissaert (DTB 418/205). Susanna Smissaert, the daughter of Jan Smissaert, was the sister of Gillis Smissaert of R 30704 and of Joan Carlo Smissaert (1590-1634), lord of Niel. Her mother was Susanna de Clerck. Francois Hustaer(t), born in Antwerp in 1581, died before in 1614 (Nederlandsche Leeuw 78(1961), col. 113). He was probably the brother of Ann Hustaert, who married the painter Guilliam van Nieulandt de jonge. The latter was 36 and living in Antwerp when he declared in a deposition dated 14 January 1620, that, in the preceding year, he had made 8 paintings in olive oil of towns (steden) for the merchant Pedro Coenrarts, who paid him 48 f. a piece in cash (Duverger, Antwerpse kunstinventarissen 2(1985), pp. 77-8). On 24 October 1635, Guilliam van Nieulandt, painter, and Juffr. Anna Hustaert drew up their testament in Amsterdam. They left 100 f. to their daughter Constantia van Nieulandt, wife of the painter Adriaen van Utrecht (NA 372, fol. 153, Not. W. Cluyt). The death inventory of Constantia van Nieulandt was taken in Antwerp on 22, 27 and 29 January 1657. It containted a portrait of Anna Hustaert. There were very few works of art in the inventory (Duverger, Antwerpse kunstinventarissen 7(1993), pp.303-4).

BuyerFrans Venant tot Pieter Isaaxsz.
Buyer FamilyVenant, Frans (Francois) II
Buyer NotesThe painter Francois Venant II was born in Middelburg about 1591, where his father Francois Venant I (of INVNO 500), born probably in Antwerp c. 1549, had first settled about 1573. The father was married to Susanne l'Hermite. In an insinuation dated 12 March 1621, made on behalf of Jacques van de Walle (cited in the NOTES to R 34728), merchant in Amsterdam, Francois Venant (probably I) was said to be a bookkeeper, temporarily in Antwerp on behalf of Jacques van de Walle, merchant residing in Amsterdam, Van de Walle claimed some paintings and a crucifix which had belonged to his brother Lucas van de Walle and had been deposited with the late Elias Boudaen. Some of the paintings were still at the house of Gaspar Boudaen, the son of Elias, and some had been sold at auction. Elias Boudaen had died in 1597 (see Wijnroks, Handel tussen Rusland en de Nederlanden 1560-1640, p.245). Elias Boudaen and his brother Hans were related to the family of jewelers and artists Hoefnagel (ibid. p. 94). The paintings included some by Mabuse, the old master Bernaert (probably van Orly), Johannes Maijus (?), Grimmer, and Floris. The crucifix, with an emerald base, had been sold by Cornelis van Dale (the painter?) to his Imperial Majesty in 1598 (Duverger, Antwerpse kunstinventarissen 2(1985), p.154). Francois Venant was only about 16 years old at the time of this sale, when he was presumably a painter-apprentice working with or for Pieter Isaacksz. On 12 April 1625, Francois Venant, from Middelburgh, painter, 34 years old, assisted by Francois Venant de oude, his father, living in the Breestraet, was betrothed to Agnieta Pieters, from Amsterdam, 30 years old, assisted by her snaer Giertje Cornelis (DTB 670/47). Agnieta Pieters, who died in 1631, was the sister of the painter Pieter Lastman. A snaer normally designates a daughter-in-law, but this is hardly possible in the case of the thirty-year-old bride. Perhaps, in this case, it refers to a step-daughter or a sister-in-law. On 1 December 1630, Susanna Lhermite, widow of Fanchoys Venant (de oude), was mentioned (GAA, NA 593, film 4938, fol. 281). Franchoijs Venant de oude was the uncle of Jacobus le Bleu, student in medicine, whom he assisted upon his betrothal in the Hague with Ermgaert Muys van Holy on 11 August 1616 (Nederlandsche Leeuw 31(1913), col. 67). Jacobus le Bleu was apparently the brother of Jean le Bleu of R 27639. Their mother Lenora Venant was the sister of Francoijs Venant de oude. On 21 March 1621, Francoijs Venant, 48 (II), and Antony Hendricksz., jeweler, 46, declared at the request of Wenzel Reijdans, that an inventory of the goods of Leonora Venant, his sister, and the mother-in-law of Pieter van Ravesteyn (see the NOTES to R 27639) had never been received. The painter Francoijs Venant signed the Remonstrant petition of 1628. He was buried on 17 March 1636 (Oud Holland, 4(1886), p. 20.)
