BuyerPieter Evertsz. Hulft
Pre Lot Headervan Crispijn [Colijn]
Buyer FamilyHulft (or Hulst), Pieter Evertsz. (I)
Buyer NotesOn 31 May 1597, Pieter Evertsz., 30, living in the Nieuwestadt, assisted by his grandfather Jan Smit and by his brother Nicolaes Evertsz., was betrothed to Balge Pieters, 18, assisted by her father Pieter Dircksz. Hasselaer (DTB 408/188). Pieter Dircksz. Hasselaer was Lieutenant of a company of shooters in 1623. His son Pieter Pietersz. Hasselaer was burgomaster of Amsterdam eight times between 1638 and 1649. On 10 November 1605, Pieter Evertsz. Hulft and his wife Balichie Pieters had a child baptized in the O.K. in the presence of Jan Willemsz. van Haarlem and Mary Gerrits van Beresteyn (DTB 4/143). In 1606, Pieter Evertsz. Hulft, was a collector for the Haarlem lottery. Several individuals who were said to be living in his house on the N.Z. Voorburgwal, behind the N.K. near the St. Nicolaesbrug, bought lots, including Grietge and Femmetge Barents and Nathaniel Sol (GAA 124/16 F etc..) On 12 December 1621, Pieter Evertsz. Hulft and Balichjen Hasselaers had their son Gerrit baptized in the O.K. in the presence of Claes Hasselaers and Geertgien Basdr. (DTB 5/374). Nicolaes Hasselaer (1593-1635) was a brewer. He became captain-major of the Amsterdam militia in 1626. Geertgien Basdr. was presumably Gertruijd Bas who married Gerrit Hasselaer Pietersz. on 28 January 1618 (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 206). Gerard Bas, the brother of Gertruijd Bas, also signed the Remonstrant petition of 1628. Hulft was a brewer in the Lastage in de Witte Haen. In 1617, a Remonstrant preacher, pursued by a crowd of Counter-Remonstrants, took refuge in his brewery and received protection from Pieter Hulft (Wagenaar, Amsterdam, vol. 1, p. 462). Pieter Hulft was in business with Paulus van Beest van Heemskerck in a company van de swarte, groene, and witte leeuwen, named after the ships they freighted. Pauwels van Heemskerck also signed the Remonstrant petition. Under the name Pieter Evertsz., Hulft freighted one ship on 29 March 1601 and one on 30 March of the same year (with Claes Andriessen of R 30086 and Lenert Rans, a merchant of Brugge origin) (Winkelman, Bronnen voor de geschiedenis van de Nederlandse Oostzeehandel, R.G.P., 184(1983), pp. 20, 23). On 19 December 1618, Pieter Evertsz. Hulst, brewer, 32 years of age, made a deposition at the request of Cornelis Adriaensz. Ackersloot (NA 200, film 111). In 1631, he paid a tax of 160 f., at which time he lived on the Cingel over de bruch (Kohier, fol. 122, p. 29.) In December 1635, Pieter Evertsz. Hulft, brewer in de Haen, named his servant (dienaer) Jan Cornelisz. Roos (perhaps the son of Cornelis Adriaensz. Roos of R 31021) to represent him to collect a debt owed to him by Dirck Aertsz. Huysman in Buickslotermeer (probably for land rents) (NA 597, fol. 184-5, Not. Lamberti). He was buried on 14 November 1639 (DTB 1054/128 and Elias, Vroedschap, p. 535.) Gerard Hulft, the son of Pieter Evertsz., was baptized on 12 December 1621. He studied law and became a city secretary of Amsterdam in 1645. He became raad-ordinaris of the Dutch possessions in the Indies in 1654 and later director general. He died in the Indies in 1656. He was friends with Vondel who wrote an elogy after his death. His portrait was painted by Govaert Flinck (De Balbian Verster, Gerard Hulft 1621-1656 Jaarboek Amstelodamum 29(1932), pp. 130-158). Another son, Pieter Hulft II, became brewer in his father's brewery, the Witte Haen. On 1 December 1663. he was said to ship beer by barge to the wharves of the V.O.C. Since he made use of beer-carriers, he was obligated to join the beer-carriers' guild (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P. 144(1974), p.715).

BuyerMoucheron op de turffmarckt
Buyer FamilyMoucheron, (Melchior de ?)
Buyer NotesThe buyer may be Melchior de Moucheron, born in Antwerp in 1557, whose collection was noted by Carel van Mander. He was a merchant trading with Moscow, at least as early as 1595; he returned from Moscow to Amsterdam in 1602 (M.J. Bok in Dawn of the Golden Age, Exh. Cat. p. 158). On 20 November 1595, he lodged a notarial protest against Vincent Bueninck, the agent of the company of Sr. Pompeus Dirck Occo, claiming that he, Bueninck, had thwarted him in various ways, spreading evil reports about him, etc.. in Moscovy. The protest was read in Amsterdam in the presence of Lowijs Verbeke (Delbecque ?), Daniel van Uffelen, and Jan Bruyn, associates of Vincent Bueninck (S. van Zuiden in Economisch-Historisch Jaarboek 259-264.) Melchior de Moucheron seems to have returned to Antwerp. On 9 February 1624, Melchior de Moucheron, living in this city, declared that Guilliame Leys and Jan Wissels, both process-servers (deurwaerders) of the Court of Brabant, had removed from his house a painting of Adam and Eve by Lucas Cranighe (Cranach) as counterpart of a sum of 160 f. that the court had awarded to Franchoys Spierincx at the expense of the deponent. Moucheron claimed that the process-servers had not been authorized by the court to remove the painting (Duverger, Antwerpse kunstinventarissen 2(1985), p. 305). The title of this lot (de vorst van Moscou) supports the conjecture that it was Melchior and not one of his brothers who was the buyer. His brothers were named Balthasar and Cosimo (or Cosmo). They were all three the sons of Pieter de Moucheron and Maria Adriaens Daniels (Nederlandsche Leeuw 100(1983), p. 233). Balthasar Moucheron , from Arnemuyden, was 32 in 1619. He would have been 20 years old in 1607 (Oud Holland, 3(1885), p. 231.) On 14 December 1615, Balthasar Moucheron signed the Album Amicorum of the fencing master Gerard Thibault (along with several other buyers at Orphan Chamber auctions) (De la Fontaine Verwey, Jaarboek Amstelodamum 69(1977), p. 53). Balthasar married Cornelia van Broeckhoven in 1619 (ibid). He was the father of the painter Frederick de Moucheron, born in Amsterdam in 1633 (Briels, Vlaamse schilders, 1997, p. 361). Frederick Moucheron, painter, 25, assisted by Baltasar de Mucheron, his father, was betrothed to Mariecke Suderville, from Leiden, 22, assisted by her aunt Catrine le Febre, on 3 July 1659. When the couple baptized their daugher Cornelia on 12 February 1662, Isabella de Jouderville was a witness (Oud Holland 3(1885), p. 231). Mariecke Suderville (Jouderville) was presumably the sister of Isabella and of Magdalena de Jouderville, first married to Pieter le Febvre and then to Juliaen Teniers (INVNO 557). Catrine le Febre was presumably the sister of Pieter le Febvre. On Cosimo de Moucheron, see Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P. 78(1933), p. 134, who cites a contract of 2 November 1615 whereby Cosimo set up a company to produce leather for bookbinding. Cosimo de Moucheron was a schutter in the company of Captain Geurt van Beuningen when he was portrayed by Jan Tengnagel at the annual banquet of the company in the Handboogdoelen in 1613 (Rijksmuseum, All the Paintings of the Rijksmuseum, p. 535). Balthasar de Moucheron was a witness at the baptism of Cosimo's son Maurits on 12 March 1619 (DTB 3/278).

Buyer[crossed out: Arnout van Someren]
Buyer FamilySomeren, Arnout (Aert, Artus) van (I)
Buyer NotesArnout (or Aert) van Someren (I), the brother of the painter, art dealer, and innkeeper Barent van Someren (of R 20424) was born in Antwerp. He was first noted in Amsterdam in 1594 (Gelderblom, Zuid-Nederlandse kooplieden, p. 314). He seems to have been a merchant (Gelderblom, ibid.) On 19 May 1602, he was present at the baptism of Balthasar, the son of Melchior Dortmont de oude (of R 31176) (DTB 138/38). He was the executor of the testament of Barent van Someren in 1604. He must not be confused with Arnout van Someren II, the son of Barent van Someren, to whom Jan Six van Chandelier dedicated two poems (Oud Holland 24(1906), p. 8). Note: This painting was opgehouden (held up or withdrawn.

Buyer FamilyClaesz., Hendrick
Buyer NotesThe buyer may be identical with Hendrick Claesz. Meebael of R 30479 or with Hendrick Claesz. Aardebael of R 27980. A less likely possibility is that he is the painter Hendrick Claesz., from Mechelen, who became a poorter of Amsterdam on 6 June 1597 (Briels, Vlaamse schilders, 1997, p. 310). The words Not[aris] Banckem were inscribed in the left-hand margin of this lot.

BuyerJacques Romboutsz.
Pre Lot HeaderVan Pieter van Brussel
Buyer FamilyRomboutsz., Jacques
Buyer NotesThe buyer is likely to be the merchant and insurer Jacques Rombouts of INVNO 727, who died in December 1608. He is not to be confused with Jacob (sometimes called Jacques) Jacobsz. Rombouts (probably of R 26961), who lived from 1581 to 1626. The older Jacques Rombouts, married to Anna de Wilde, baptized his daughter, named Catrijna, in the presence of Tanneken Moens, on 26 March 1596 (DTB 38/90). Tanneken Moens was the mother of Bartel Philipsz. of R 27378. On 12 November 1599, Jacques Rombouts and Tanneken Rombouts (identical with Anna de Wilde ?) had their son Geeliaemen baptized in the presence of Jacques's sister Cathalijna (DTB 3/209). The older Jacques Rombouts was the brother of Hans Rombouts (born in Antwerp) of R 30032. The widow and son of Jacques Rombouts were taxed 300 f. in 1631, living on the Singel (Kohier, fol. 13, p. 4). On Pieter van Brussel, who had apparently consigned some of the goods sold at this sale, see R 30450. Although Van Brussel was slated to receive the proceeds for some of the goods sold at this auction, he was not mentioned in the introduction to the sale. Note also that 4 bortgens were crossed out; yet no other description of the lot was substituted. It is therefore likely that they had been withdrawn.
