BuyerWillem Jacobsz.
Pre Lot Headervan Crispiaen Colyn
Buyer FamilyJacobsz., Willem (van Rijn)
Buyer NotesThe buyer may be the individual of that name who stood to receive 48 f. from the estate of Gillis van Coninxloo (Oud Holland 3(1885), p. 44). M.J. Bok suggests he may be identical with Willem Jacobsz. van Rijn (Amsterdam 1577-Amsterdam 1625), whose collection was cited by Carel van Mander. He lived in de Witte Engel near the N.K. kerckhoff in 1606. His father Jacob Egbertsz. van Rijn was elected to the Raed of Amsterdam in 1605 but dismissed from the Raed in 1611 for bankruptcy. His parents were portrayed by Cornelis Ketel. His mother was Maria Claes Gaeff, who was closely related to Claes Meyndertsz. of R 22127 (M.J. Bok in Dawn of the Golden Age, Amsterdam, Exh. Cat. p. 159). Willem Jacobsz. van Rijn married Trijntje Dircksdr. on 10 August 1599. She was the daughter of Dirck Lambertsz., with whom Willem Jacobsz. van Rijn invested 7200 f. in the first subscription for V.O.C. shares (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, p. 146). Dirck Lambertsz. was a cloth merchant (see WK 5073/962, sale of Mr. Anthonij Foreest's wife, 20 December 1607). Mr. Anthonij Foreest (1568-1631?) was a surgeon who was portrayed in the Anatomical Lesson of Dr. Sebastiaen Egbertsz. about 1601-1603 (Amsterdammers geportretteerd; Kopstukken 1600-1800 (N. Middelkop ed.), Exh. Cat. 2002/2003,, p. 171). On 27 August 1625, Mr. Anthony Foreest, surgeon, appeared before the Orphan Chamber on behalf of his three children, Cornelis, 14, Lieven, 12, and Anneken, 10, whose late mother was Mayken Wouters. He brought obligations valued at over 16,000 f. (WK 5073/789). Willem Jacobsz. van Rijn was apparently the brother of Pieter Jacobsz. van Rijn of R 27935. The daughter of Willem Jacobsz. van Rijn, named Geertruyd, born in 1611, married Andries Denijsz. Winius of INVNO 487 on 27 February 1627 (Elias, Vroedschap van Amsterdam, p.. 269). There is another possibility, however. Gillis van Conincxloo owed Willem Jacobsz. 48 f. for frames (Briels, Zuidnederlandse immigratie ..., 1976, p.235). Willem Jacobsz. was a buyer at several sales, beginning in 1605. It seems somewhat unlikely that a framemaker (unless he was also a dealer) would buy a painting at auction for 84 f. (at the Hans Conincxloo sale). On balance, Van Rijn is the more likely buyer.
