BuyerCornelis de Meyer
Buyer FamilyMeyer, Cornelis de (II)
Buyer NotesThe buyer may be identical with Cornelis de Meyer de jonge, the son of Cornelis Sijmonsz. de Meyer(?), a merchant who was active in the Moscovy trade (Wijnroks, Handel tussen Rusland en de Nederlanden 1560-1640, p.92 and passim. He was first married to Margerite Verbeeck, the sister of Jacques Verbeeck (INVNO 544 and INVNO 928) and of Isaack Verbeeck (I), of the present sale, of which he received the net proceeds on 19 January 1613. He must have remarried some time later with Sabina van de Wimpe. On 18 October 1625, Saartje Gerrits, from Delft, widow of Mr. Pieter Claesz., schoolmeester, remarried with Cornelis de Meyer, widower of Sabina van de Wimpe, living in the Boerensteechje (DTB 430/280). For the death inventory of Mr. Pieter Claesz., see INVNO 840. He is not identical with Cornelis de Meijer (I), goldsmith, who died before 1634 (R 33133) or with Cornelis de Meijer (III) who was said to be 28 years old in a deposition dated 28 May 1636 (NA 695A, film 4821). This last Cornelis de Meijer, son of Joris de Meyer, was born in the year of the sale, or thereabouts. He is probably identical with the wine dealer whose insolvent inventory was taken on 4 April 1646 (DBK 5072/352 and INVNO 1049).

BuyerJ. Verbeeck
Buyer FamilyVerbeeck, J. (Jacques ?)
Buyer NotesThe buyer is likely to be Jacques Verbeeck (of INVNO 544), the brother of the late Isaack Verbeecq, who invested 6000 f. in the first subscription for V.O.C. shares in 1602 and 37,074 f. in the second in 1612 (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, pp. 229 and 259.) On 10 September 1602, Jacques Verbeeck, from Antwerp, 30 years old, assisted by his brother Abraham Verbeeck (of R 36982), was betrothed to Catharina Jansdr. van Geel, assisted by her grandfather Daniel van Geel, and her moeykens Sara van Geel and Margriete Verbruggen, widow of Tibout de Pickere (DTB 411/288). On Tibout (or Thibaut) de Pickere, see the NOTES to R 31375. Catharina van Geel, the sister of Daniel, Hans, and Constantia van Geel, died between 1606 and 21 February 1609, when Jacques Verbeeck, merchant, widower of Catelijne van Geel, sold part of the house De Fortuyn on the Warmoesstraat for 5,500 f. (Kam, Waar was dat huis in de Warmoesstraat? 1968). In 1608, Jacques Verbeeck and a number of other Amsterdam merchants signed a petition to the burgomasters of Amsterdam requesting the revocation of the prohibition on the use of cashiers to effect money transters (Van Dillen, Wisselbanken, R.G.P., 59(1925), p. 16). Jacques Verbeeck had an account of 3 folios at the Wisselbank in 1612 (Van Dillen, op.cit. p. 229). He died in that year. An inventory was taken after his death (INVNO 544) and an auction sale of his possessions (INVNO 928) occurred in the same year 1612.

Buyer FamilyGeer, Leenert van den (I)
Buyer NotesOn 3 April 1599, Lenaart van de Geer, from Antwerp, balancemaker, 27 years old, living op 't Water, no living parents, assisted by his sister Janneken Geers, was betrothed to Janneken van den Wijer, from Antwerp, living in Middelburg (DTB 762A/117). He was perhaps the son or nephew of Lenaart van der Geer, schaalmeester (also balancemaker) (I), married to Tanneken Vermeulen, who had his twins Jacob and Isaack baptized in the O.K. on 29 August 1591 (DTB 2/103). On 4 January 1601, Lenert van der Geer, the present buyer, and his wife Maeijken van de Wijer, had a son Lenert baptized in the O.K. in the presence of Jacobgen Gerrits (DTB 3/261). It is not clear whether his wife's first name was Maeijcken or Janneken. Lendert van der Geer II was buried in the O.K. 5 September 1646 (DTB 1046vo/57).

BuyerGommer Spranger
Buyer FamilySpranger, Gommer
Buyer NotesGommer Spranger was an important art collector whose works of art were sold at auction on 14 April 1638 (INVNO 305). Born in Antwerp in 1577, he was the son of Matheus Spranger, the brother of the painter Bartholomeus Spranger. Before 1604, when he became an independent merchant, he worked for Marcus de Vogelaer (whose widow was the buyer of R 43422) as his representative in Russia (Gelderblom, Zuid-Nederlandse kooplieden, p. 159). On 29 August 1613, Gommer Spranger, from Antwerp, 36 years old, no living parents, was betrothed to Maria de Pickere, 18, assisted by Margriete van der Bruggen, widow of Thibaut de Pickere, her mother (DTB 417/209). Thibaut de Pickere I was a merchant, born in Antwerp in 1559, fist noted in Amsterdam in 1584. He died in 1600 (Gelderblom, op. cit. p. 311 and Prosopographic Data Base). Henri de Pickere, born in 1588, the brother of Maria de Pickere, married Susanna Moor, the daughter of Bartholomeus Moor, of R 21230, and Maria Nicquet, on 27 July 1627. After his death she remarried with Laurens Reael of R 32231 (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 308). On 23 August 1615, Gommer Spranger and Maria de Pickere had their son Matheus baptized in the N.K. in the presence of Margriet van der Bruggen (DTB 39/395). On 18 December 1616, they had their daughter Constantija baptized in the O.K. in the presence of Constantia Coymans, the wife of Leenart Rans, and of Dr. Augerius Kluitius (on whom see below) (DTB 5/202). Constantia Coymans (1583-1652) was the half-sister of Spranger's wife Maria de Pickere (1595-1616) (Elias, Vroedschap, pp. 761 and 542), with thanks to Paul Crenshaw for correcting a previous error in my identification of the witness Constantia Coymans. Gommer Spranger was the uncle of Marten van Alewijen (Halewijn) of R 25443 and of Matheus Halewijn of R 25399 (Marten and Matheus were brothers.) He was a merchant in the Bantamstraet in 1613, then later moved to the O.Z. Voorburgwal where he lived in de Lupart (a house that he still owned at the time of his death). On 2 September 1614, Thomas Jansz., 61, Dirck Woutersz., 52, and Gommer Spranger, 36, all merchants trading with Moscovy, declared at the request of Sr. Hans Bernincx, also merchant here, concerning the earnings of partners in Moscovy ventures who did not actually travel to Moscovy. Gerrardt (Gerrit) Bas, who was only 14 years old, the minimum age to witness a deed, acted as a witness (D.S. van Zuiden, Hollandsch-Russische relaties, Economisch-Historisch Jaarboek 2(1916), pp. 265-7). On 23 July 1619, Gommer Spranger, merchant, 40, declared at the request of Hans Romburch (of R 27468) and of Jacques Merchier (of R 20399) that he had bought carsaijen (a type of cloth) for 13 f. a piece (bolt?) from Romburch and Merchier (NA 200, film 111, Not. J.F. Bruyning). On 19 October 1620, two brothers of Gommer Spranger made a deposition in which they declared that Gommer had gone to Prague in 1611, under dangerous conditions, to settle the estate of his uncle the famous painter Bartholomeus Spranger. It was probably on that occasion that he brought back some copper plates and wood-plates that were found in his inventory taken from 31 December 1637 to 5 January 1638 and that were eventually sold at the sale of 14 April 1638 (I. van Eeghen in Maandblad Amstelodamum, 1965, p. 65). On 27 June 1618, Gommer Spranger contracted to freight a ship to Archangel (Winkelman, Bronnen voor de geschiedenis van de Nederlandse Oostzeehandel R.G.P. 186(1983), p. 183). In 1623, he was one of the directors of the W.I.C. (Extracts from Notulen of W.I.C. in Algemeen Rijksarchief.) Music was played in the house of Gommer Spranger. Jan Pietersz. Sweelinck of R 27883), who died in 1621, dedicated his second book of psalm music to eight philomuses de la très renommée ville d'Amsterdam, including Gommer Spranger (Giskes in Jaarboek Amstelodamum 86(1994), footnote 16). After the death of Maria de Pickere, Spranger married Catharina de Raet, the daughter of Elias de Raet I (of R 28395), on 24 May 1622. On 7 December 1629, the merchant Gommer Spranger declared that he had two children with the late Catharina de Raet, named Marcus, 6, and Catharina, 6 (WK 5073/789). He married for the third time on 9 April 1630 with Susanna Mostart, the daughter of Daniel Mostart I. She was the sister of Daniel Mostart II of R 21940 (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 761.) Gommer Spranger's sister Susanna Spranger was married to doctor Outgert Cluijt, the son of the Delft botanist Dirck Cluijt. Outgert was the brother of the Amsterdam notary Willem Cluyt. On 25 February 1639, Susanna Spranger, widow of doctor Outgert Cluijt, drew up her testament. She left bequests to Willem Cluijt, and to her cousins Matheus (of R 25399) and Marten van Halewijn (of R 25443) (NA 1413, film 1381, Not. Fr. Bruyning). In 1631, Gommer Spranger paid a tax, together with his wife and children, of 350 f. (Kohier, fol. 132, p. 31). On 5 July 1634, he named his cousin Emanuel Spranger (of INVNO 1150) to collect a debt from Hendrick van Ringen in Moscow, who was also his cousin, for goods to which he was entitled (NA 832, film 562). He was buried on 12 October 1637 (I. van Eeghen, ibid.) On 12 April 1639, Juffr. Susanna Mostart, widow of the late Gomar Spranger, assisted by her brother Guilliam Mostart (of R 25568) and her brother-in-law Hans aux Brebis (R 25592) and the honorable Mathis and Marten Halewijn, item Hieronimus Rans, together with Jan de Raedt (of R 25452) and the sugar refiner Cornelis Nuijts (1575-166), guardians appointed by the Orphan Chamber over the children of Gommer Spranger, agreed that his clothes should be sold at auction and the proceeds divided among the children. His widow, Susanna Mostart, could keep her own clothes, but not her jewelry which should also be sold (NA 1413, film 1381, Not. F. Bruyningh). On 2 December 1639, Tobias de Coninck, 53, sworn broker, declared at the request of the widow and children of Gommer Spranger, that Spranger had sold some bolts of Roman silk cloth to Jacob Franssen and that Andries Quast had been surety for the sale. Jacob Fransz. was a tailor who was said to be 50 years old in a deposition of 16 September 1639 (cited in the NOTES to R 20084) (NA 1413, film 1381, Not. F. Bruyningh). On 20 November 1640, Matheus van Alewijn (Halewijn) and Jeronimus Ranst, as guardians over Matheus, 25, and Constantia, 24, the two children of Gommer Spranger by his first marriage, whose mother was Maria de Picker, and Jan de Raedt, together with Cornelis Nuyts (sugar refiner), as guardians over Marcus, 17, and Catharina, 14, the children of Gommer Spranger from the second bed, procreated by Catharina de Raedt, together with the afore-said Matheus van Alewyn as guardian beside his brother Marten van Alewyn over Susanna, 5, and Anna Maria, 4, children of Gommer Spranger from the third bed, whose mother is Susanna Mostert, appeared before the Orphan Chamber and presented the following assets on behalf of the children: a bank note for 12,600 f., obligations for 11,000 and 7,000 f., a house on the O.Z. Voorburgwal, and a schepen kennisse for 3,600 f. in the name of Jeronimus Ranst (WK 5073/789). On Jeronimus Ranst (Rans), see the TEXT to R 1239 of INVNO 1334. Note that there were at least three women named Susanna Gommer(s), beside Susanna, the daughter of Gommer Spranger who was 5 years old in 1640: Gommer's sister married to Outgert Cluijt; the wife of Jacob Repmacker (said to be a widow on 21 April 1637); and the wife of Jan Roetersz. (cited in the NOTES to R 20042).

BuyerPieter van de Venne
Buyer FamilyVenne, Pieter van de (I)
Buyer NotesThere seem to have been (at least) three individuals named Pieter van de(r) Venne in Amsterdam in the first half of the 17th century. The present one, born in Antwerp about 1565, seems to be identical with Pieter van de Venne, the goods of whose widow were sold on 31 July 1623 (INVNO 1074). On 25 June 1594, Pieter van de Venne (I), from Antwerp, 29, living in the Nieustraet, assisted by Marcus Jacobs, his father-in-law, was betrothed to Claerken van Hersbergen, from Brugge, 23, living on the Rockin (Oud Holland 4(1886), p. 217). On 13 June 1602, Clara, daughter of Pieter van de Venne and Clara van Harsbergen, was baptized in the O.K. in the presence of Christiaen Anthonisz., Jan Cock, and Grietgen van der Venne (ibid.) On 21 February 1610, Maria, the daughter of Pieter van de Venne and Clara van Harsbergen, was baptized in the O.K. in the presence of Pieter de Kolenaer (of R 27612), Agnieta Pels (the wife of Lucas van de Venne of R 27635), and Marya Rogiers (ibid.) Lucas van de Venne (born in 1573), of INVNO 189 and R 27635, was the brother of Pieter van de Venne I. Pieter van de Venne I, who had been living in the Warmoesstraet, was buried on 17 July 1617 (ibid.) He was apparently the father of Pieter van de Venne II, a droggist (sold medicinal plants and so forth), who married Maria Florianus, widow of Pieter Mercijs, in 1628. He was born about 1595 (NA 694B, Not. J. Warnaerts, deposition of 8 July 1634). The third, Pieter van de Venne III, born in 1623, was the son of Lucas van de Venne cited above. He was the cousin of Pieter van de Venne II. It was probably he who married Maria de Carpentier (Nederlandsche Leeuw 73(1956). On 9 February 1637, Catarina van de Venne, the sister of Pieter II, Francoijs, and Hans van de Venne, signed a pre-nuptial contract with the predicant Johannes de Meerwaert. Lucas van de Venne was said to be Catarina's uncle. Alexander van der Graeff, who assisted the future bride, was said to be her brother-in-law. His brother Guilliaem of INVNO 1121 was married to Catarina's sister Susanna van de Venne (NA 642, film 4953, fol. 331.) On Hans van de Venne, see the TEXT of R 1121 of Montias1.

BuyerJan Benning
Buyer FamilyJan Benning (Coeckebacker) (I?)
Buyer NotesGiven the date of the present inventory, it is very unlikely that the buyer of this lot is identical with the buyer at R 26500 of 20 January 1638, who was called the son of Grietge. He may be Jan Benning de oude, alias Jan Benning Coeckebacker, cited in the NOTES to R 26500. Jan Benning Coeckebacker was the brother of Claes Jacobsz. Coeckebacker, who was a member of the Vroedschap from 1594 to 1623. With his brother Jan, he freighted two ships to travel through the Straights of Magellan (Elias, Vroedschap p.214). On 13 October 1636, Jelmer Hendricksz., goldsmith, declared at the request of Neyltje Canters, widow of Jan Benning Koekebakker, that for the marriage of Aechge Bennings, the daughter of the petitioner (Neyltje Canters), he, the witness, had been called in the presence of Neyltje Canters and Nicolaes Doublet, and had undertaken to make certain jewels. Doublet had come to the witness's house urging to make the jewels (in time for the weddin). She had paid the witness 140 f. for Nicolaes Doublet, her brother-in-law to be (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.P.G. 144(1974), p. 129).

BuyerAert Bissels
Buyer FamilyBessels (Bissels), Aert (Arnolt)
Buyer NotesThe buyer was probably Arnolt Bessels, the brother of Adam Bessels of R 35041. He was born in Steden on 17 April 1592 (he was only about 16 years old at the time of this sale). He was buried in Amsterdam on 26 October 1626. He was a merchant who travelled to Italy in 1614 and, with his brother Adam, to Moscow in 1617. He was betrothed to Johanna Slichers, probably the daughter of Anthony Slicher of R 20039 and of Janneken de Wolf, on 24 October 1626 and apparently died two days later. He was the nephew of Jacques Verbeeck, for whom his brother Adam worked for 6 years. Jacques's brother Isaack was the late owner of the goods sold in the present sale (Nederlandsche Leeuw 50(1932), col. 136).

BuyerDaniel van Geel
Buyer FamilyGeel, Daniel van (II?)
Buyer NotesThere were apparently at least three individuals named Daniel van Geel who were active in the first half of the 17th century. Daniel van Gheel I was the father of Elias van Geel, whom he assisted on the occasion of Elias's betrothal in 1604, at which time Elias was 34 years old. (It is thus likely that Daniel van Geel I was born before 1550.) Daniel van Gheel I fled Antwerp to settle in Amsterdam in or about 1585 (De Navorscher 53(1903), pp. 466-7). Daniel Jansz. van Geel II was the son of Hans van Geel (I) of INVNO 785. He bought 6 f. worth of lots in the Haarlem lottery of 1606, at which time he was living in Utrecht (GAA 4/59 F 28). He is likely to be identical with Daniel van Geel who bought shares for 10,200 f. in the second subscription for the V.O.C. of 1612 (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister pp. 153, 229, and 258). On 10 December 1615, Daniel and his presumed brother Giovanni (Jan) van Geel (Jan van Geel II of R 37007) signed with an inscription in Dutch the Album Amicorum of the famous fencing master Gerard Thibault (De la Fontaine Verwey, Jaarboek Amstelodamum 69(1977), p. 53). On 15 November 1617, Carlo van Heldewier, Isaacq Coymans, merchants, and Adriaen van Nieulandt, painter, made a deposition at the request of Daniel van Gelen (probably Daniel van Geel II). They declared that Daniel van Gelen had bought from the Antwerp art dealer Anthonij Goetkint, two paintings on copper, by Hendrick van Steenwijck, presently in London, representing churches in perspective, one by day and one by night. The transaction had been effected in the house of Jacques van Hanswyck II (Bredius, Künstler-inventare, p.167n). In 1631, Daniel van Geel II paid a tax of 300 f., at which time he lived on the West side of the Heregracht (Kohier, fol. 86, p. 21). On 7 December 1634, Willem Jansz. Swindes, carmosine dyer, ceded to Daniel (II) and Jan (II) van Geel half the income from the goods left by Lysbeth Willems, the sister of his wife Jacobmina Willems (NA 843, fol. 508, Not. Hoogenboom). Daniel van Gheel III, ridder, Heer van Spanbroeck, Zuidermeer and Zuiderwerve, was baptized on 16 April 1628 (DTB 40/447). He was the son of Jean (Giovanni) van Geel (II) and of Elisabeth Lampsins (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 478.) It was presumably Daniel van Geel II who was a witness at the baptism of Adriaen, son of Adriaen van Nieulant and Katalyne Raes on 11 December 1614 (Oud Holland, 3(1885), p. 235.)

BuyerAbraham Oyens
Buyer FamilyOyens (Oijens), Abraham
Buyer NotesOn 15 October 1605, Abraham Oijens, from Antwerp, 22 years old, living on the O.Z. Achterburchwal, assisted by his father Bastiaen Oyens, was betrothed to Marie Plante, from Brugge, 23, assisted by her uncle Bartholomeus Bisschop and the latter's wife Tanneken Plante (DTB 411/398). On Bartholomeus Bisschop and his wife Tanneken Plante, see R 20543. Abraham Oyens bought one lot for 6 stuivers at the Haarlem lottery of 1606 (GAA, 140/25 F 1020). On 23 July 1609, Abraham Oiens declared, in a joint deposition with the painter Cornelis van der Voort, that Hendrick van der Meer (who had been apprenticed to Cornelis van der Voort) was the son of the late painter Anthoni van der Meer and that he an uncle in Hamburg named Jochem van der Meer (Bredius, Künstler-inventare, p. 1183). Abraham Oijensz. was a director of the W.I.C. kamer of Amsterdam in 1629 (C. Romburgh, Beredeneerd Register op de Werken der Linschoten-Vereeniging, p. 525). Abraham Oijens, living on the West side of the Heeregracht, paid a tax of 150 f. in 1631 (Kohier, fol. 85, p. 20). On 10 February 1640, Abraham Oyens, director of the W.I.C. apprenticed his son Daniel to Denys Demaistres and Laurens de Colenaer, merchants in Bordeaux, for three years (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven, R.G.P., 144(1974), p. 254). Denys Demaistres was probably related to (perhaps the son of) Denys de Maistres cited in the NOTES to R 27698. In St. Nicholaes Milde Gaven, a libelous poem published in 1640, which had been attributed to Mattheus Gansnab Tengnagel but which turns out to have been written by two amateur poets, Pieter van den Broeck (of R 26978) and Jacob Valcksz. (of R 22128), certain verses seem to refer to an attorney named Abraham Oyens who had a good practice but of doubtful alloy (Oud Holland 1(1883), p. 205 and Jaarboek Amstelodamum 30(1933), passim).
