Buyer | Jan Thysz. voors. |
Buyer Family | Thysz., Jan (or Hans) |
Buyer Notes | The buyer may be Hans Thijsz. de oude of INVNO 690. However, the identification is by no means secure. Hans Thijsz. I was a merchant and jeweler. On 28 June 1594, Johan Tijsz., from Antwerp, assisted by his father Christoffel Tijsz., was betrothed to Catharina Boel, from Antwerp, assisted by her father Augustijn Boel (DTB 403/113). He invested 12,000 f. in the first subscription for V.O.C. shares and 34,500 f. in the subscription of 1612 (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, p. 259). He lived for some time in Dantzig, where at least two of his children were born. He freighted a ship with his father-in-law Augustijn Boel on 31 July 1597 (GAA, Extracten). He had an account of 2 folios at the Wisselbank (Van Dillen, op.cit. sup. p. 122). On 1 November 1610, Hans Thysz. and Nicolaes Coop, on behalf of Pieter Paul Rubens, signed a contract for the sale of Thijsz. to Rubens of a house and bleaching works in Antwerp for 8,960 f. The contract specified that Rubens, as part of his payment for the house, would give a painting to Thijsz. as a present and would supply lessons in the art of painting to a son of Thijsz. (A. Bredius, Een onbekend Rubens- document (Oud Holland 30(1912), pp. 216-7). Thijsz.'s wife Catharina Boel was buried on 13 June 1606 (DTB 1043/8). He himself died in Hoorn, probably on 22 September 1611. His remains were brought to Amsterdam where he was buried, coming from the Rouensen Kaij, naest daer het stroij te coop is on 24 September 1611 (DTB 1043/106). His oldest son, named Augustijn, died from the plague in 1614, on the return home from a trip to Poland. On 29 October 1616, 51 f. 5 st. 8 pen. were paid to a stone carver for a tombstone to lay on his grave (Arch. Thys, Leyden, no. 112A). His other children were named Catherijne (born in Dantzig in 1607), Anthonie (born in Dantzig in 1596), Hans (de jonge), of R 27698, and Francoijs. Hans de jonge bought lots at his father's sale as well as the Rauwart sale of 1613 and at the Albert Martsz. sale of 1621. He was at least an amateur painter (one of the expenditures recorded in a costboeck of the brothers was 4 f. 8 st. aen Hans voor een doeck om te schilderen on 25 May 1613, Arch. Thys, 112A)). He may have taken painting lessons from Rubens (see the document on the sale of a house in Antwerp by Hans Thysz. de oude in the NOTES to R 31584). Anthony was betrothed to Elisabeth Bacher on 23 January 1621 (I. van Eeghen, Rubens en Rembrandt kopen van de familie Thijs, Maandblad Amstelodamum 64(1977), p. 60). On 8 May 1612, Augustijn Thijs (of major age), the son of the late Hans Thijsz., jeweler, with the curators of the minor children of Hans Thijsz., named Denis de Maistres and Jan van Wely (of R 21219), stated that Dr. Athonius Tysius, professor of theology at Harderwyck, had 2,100 f. accruing to him in the 10-year accounting of the V.O.C., which he had inherited from Hadewich Bacher, the wife of Francoijs Thijs (his sister-in-law) (NA 12, fol. 113, Bruyningh, Extracten). For other information on the Thijsz. family, see the TEXT of R 589 of Montias1. |
