BuyerAntoni Fouace
Buyer FamilyFouace (Fovas), Antoni (Jansz.)
Buyer NotesOn 7 January 1597, an entry in the journal of Hans Thijsz. (de oude), jeweler, states that Antony Fouwas was credited 690 f. for supplying him with 11 rubies (Arch. Thys, Library of the University of Leyden, no. 119). On 1 June 1605, Simon Luls, merchant in Amsterdam, gave a procuration to Bartholomeus Laurens and Antonio Fouace to demand from Nicolaes van Breusegem and his servants in Moscovy all the goods belonging to him (NA 56, fol. 148, Not. L. Heilinck). Bartolomeus Laurensz. did business in Russia assisting the Brabantine Samuel Bernarts in his competitive struggle with the North Hollander Sion Lus (Luls) (Wijnroks, Handel tussen Rusland en de Nederlanden, 1560-1640, p.358). On 25 June 1610, Anthony Fouace, together with Jacques Bernart, freighted a ship to Archangelsk. Jacques Bernart was a merchant from Doornik, first noted in Amsterdam in 1585. He was related to Daniel Bernart of R 31619 and to Isaack Bernart of R 33620 (Gelderblom, Zuid-Nederlandse kooplieden, p. 295). On 29 June 1610, Antonio Fouace, on his way to Russia, had a number of obligations recorded, including one owed to Hans le Thor (I)(of R 20997) for 122 pounds Flemish (NA 21N, fol. 17-19, Not. S. Henrix). On 28 April 1612, Jan Jansz. Corver, 57, and Hillebrand den Otter (of R 28004), 45, declared at the request of Jasper de Vogelaer that they had been involved in the dispute between Vogelaer and Antoni Schorer (on whom see below). Hans Barninck and Anthoni Fouace had also acted as arbiters in the matter. Hans Barninck is surely identical with Hans Bernincx cited in the NOTES to R 31375. Fouace had been surety for a debt owed by Schorer to Harmen Jansz. van der Goes (NA 197, fol. 260vo, Not. Bruyningh, Extracten). Jasper de Vogelaer, a merchant born in Antwerp, was the brother of Marcus de Vogelaer (married to Elisabeth van Valckenburgh of R 23422). He was first noted in Amsterdam in 1598 and died in 1631 (Gelderblom, Prosopographic Data Base). Jan Jansz. Corver was the father of Dirck Corver of R 23516 and of Nicolaes Corver of R 8317 and the father-in-law of Goris de Waert of R 7605. Anthony Schorer was 33 when he declared, in a deposition of 26 December 1613, made at the request of Hans Bernincx (Barninck), that he had been in Arkhangelsk in 1607 in the service of Casper (Jasper) de Vogelaer and that he had sold there some wine in exchange for fur pelts for shipping to Amsterdam on Vogelaer's account (Economisch-Historisch Jaarboek 2(1917), pp. 264-5). On Anthony Schorer's activity in the Russian trade, see also Wijnroks, Handel tussen Rusland en de Nederlanden, 1560-1640, p. 245). On 9 May 1612, Symon Jansz. Bosschaert, living in Haarlem, gave Frans Jansz. a procuration to collect 271 pounds Vlams from Anthony Fouasse, presently in Moscow (NA 210, fol. 192, Not. Meerhout). On 26 April 1624, Anton Ivanovsyn Cernov Fovas, bachelor, wrote from his dwelling place in Jaroslav, Russia, that he had no more hope to recover from a severe illness. He apparently died soon afterwards. He left several bequests, both to individuals in Russia and to various nephews and nieces living in Holland and Italy. The bequests to legatees in Russia exceeded those left to family members in Holland and Italy. According to Wijnroks, he was comparatively young when he died (Wijnroks, op.cit. pp. 300 and 374). On 2 February 1650, Johannes en Samuel de Laet gave a procuration to Adriaen de Raet, counsellor of the Heer Brederode, to represent them in a suit in Utrecht against the executors of the testament of Antonio Fouasse (Jaarboek C.B.G. 50(1986), p. 125). Johannes de Laet (1582-c.1650) was a historian of the W.I.C. and a director of the Chamber of the Company in Amsterdam. He married Maria Boudewijns, the sister of Francoijs Boudewijns II, probably of R 20588.
