| Buyer Notes | Hans van Hanswijck I, originally from Antwerp, was an armorer and a dealer in arms (Gelderblom, Zuid-Nederlandse kooplieden p. 303). It was at his request that the goods of his brother Jacques van Hanswyck were sold. He was probably the guardian of Jacques's children. As early as 1575, he was said to be an armorer in Amsterdam (zwaardveger) (Oud Holland 4(1885), p. 291). He was father of Claes van Hanswyck of R 29177. On 15 August 1591, Hans van Hanswyck, zwaardveger, and Erm Claes had their son Johannes baptized in the O.K. (DTB 2/101). Erm Claes Ro(o)ch was the daughter of Claes Jacobsz. Ro(o)ch of R 29300. Johannes Rooch, baptized on this occasion, may be identical with Hans van Hanswyck de jonge (II), who was named guardian over the child left by Lucas Heyndricksz. on 24 March 1621 (5073/513, fol. 184). Hans van Hanswyck I freighted one ship between 1591 and 1602 (IJzerman, Economisch-historisch Jaarboek 17(1931). p. 270) and another on 8 March 1614 (with Guillaume van der Putte and Isaack Poulle) (Winkelman, Bronnen voor de geschiedenis van de Nederlandse Oostzeehandel R.G.P. 185(1983), p.283). Guillaume van der Putte, the father of Isaack van der Putte of R 24397, and Isaack Poulle were merchants of South Netherlandish origin who both spent some time in Middelburg before settling in Amsterdam (Gelderblom, Zuid-Nederlandse kooplieden, pp. 311, 312). Isaack Poulle was probably the brother of Jenne Poulle, the wife of Isaack van der Putte (see the NOTES to R 24397). Hans van Hanswyck I also delivered war material to the city of Amsterdam. He paid a tax of 15 f. in 1585 (Van Dillen, Amsterdam in 1585, p. 12). He was a witness at the baptism of Nijkolas, the son of Andries van den Broeck and Bayken van Hanswyck (who may have been his daughter) on 11 October 1612 (R 28792). He was originally from Brabant. He was living in het gulde sweert op het Water in 1606 when he bought lots for 7 gulden 4 st. in the Haarlem lottery (GAA, 33/42 F 265). His brother Jacob (Jacques ?) van Hanswyck (II) was living in the same house, as did (his sister?) Susanna van Hanswyck (GAA, 38/9 F 304, 113/8 F 825 and 38/12 F 304). On or about 17 June 1636, Jacob van Hanswyck (II) drew up his testament. He left a bequest of 100 f. to his brother Hans van Hanswyck (III) and an equal sum to his sister Franscina van Hanswyck, to be given to them 6 weeks after his death. He left to his nephew Claes van Hanswyck (II?) (Hans's son) 1000 f. and to the son of his sister (Franscina?), Hans van den Broeck (II), 100 f. A house that he owned on the Campers Hooft was also cited (NA 856, film 576, Not. E. Rooleeu). On 10 January 1602, Susanna van Hanswyck, 22, having lived 5 years op het Water (thus since 1597), assisted by Hans van Hanswyck (I) and Erm Claes, her parents, was betrothed to Gerrit Diericsz. (signs Geret Dirxsoon), assisted by his father Dirck Jochumsz. (DTB 665/192). Gerrit Diericsz., later known as Muijsenest, was the brother of Jochem Dircx Muysenest of R 33258. On 6 June 1611, Erm Claes, widow of Hans van Hanswijck, with her guardian and brother Jan Claesz. Roch, and, for fourth parts, her brothers-in-law Gerard Dircx Muysenest and Andries van den Broeck, together with her above-named brother, sold one half of the house Walcheren van Seelandt in the Warmoesstraet to Jacob Evertsz., silk cloth merchant (probably of R 32975) (Kam, Waar was dat huis in de Warmoesstraat? 1968 37/22, p. 432). Erm Claes was buried on 6 November 1626 (DTB 1044/131vo). Susanna van Hanswyck, the wife of Gerret Dircksen Muijsenest, apparently died before late September 1634, when she was cited as the widow of Gerret Dircksen Muijsenest (NA 911). Hans van Hanswyck II, the presumed son of Hans van Hanswyck I, was buried on 10 December 1623 (DTB 1089A/36vo). Another individual named Hans van Hanswyck (III) was said to have been a curator of the estate of Gerbrant Jacobsz. Geelvinck, with whom he had been in business (NA 351B, film 6406, Not. W. Cluyt). |
