Buyer | Guilliam Bert |
Buyer Family | Bert (Bart), Guilliam |
Buyer Notes | On 15 April 1600, Guillame Bert, from Doornik, 24 years old, living in the Uyterse Steyger, assisted by his uncle Jan Sandra (I), was betrothed to Elisabeth de Falloise, from Asme (?) in England, 22, assisted by Juffr. Jenne de la Croix (dite de Drumez), widow of Jacques Mercier (I), who declared that her husband had brought up the fiancee after the death of her parents (DTB 409/85v). In 1602, Guillamme Bert invested 5,400 f. in V.O.C. shares. He had an account of 2 folios in the Wissselbank in 1611 (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister pp. 132.) In May 1609, after the beginning of the Twelve-year Truce, Guillame Bert and his cousin Mathijs Sandra formed a company to conduct trade in Spain and Portugal and the surrounding islands for six years (Gelderblom, Zuid-Nederlandse kooplieden, p. 215). On 9 March 1609, Guilliame Bert, merchant in Amsterdam, gave power-of-attorney to Jan Valloijs (perhaps his brother-in-law) to oversee some lands belonging to him (Bert) in East Frieslandt, as well as on the horses and equipment on that land (NA 115, fol. 41, Not. Bruyningh, Extracten). On 27 October 1618, Guillame Bert, widower of Elisabeth de Valoys, living on the Rockin, remarried with Maryken Goverts, widow of Vincent Alberts (DTB 423/24). Jan Sandra (I), of INVNO 281, merchant in Amsterdam, who assisted Guillame Bert upon his first betrothal in 1600, died on 28 May 1624. He was married to Susanna de Marees, the daughter of Jan de Marez and Jenne van Achterhoudt (Wapenheraut, 2(1898), pp. 40 and 62). From 1601 to 1608, Guilliam Bert, merchant in Amsterdam freighted 14 ships, either alone or in partnership with other merchants; he freighted one more ship with grain on 18 March 1614 (Winkelman, Bronnen voor de geschiedenis van de Nederlandse Oostzeehandel R.G.P., 184(1983), p. 599, and 185(1983), p. 286.) On 2 July 1612, Guilliame Bart, along with other prominent merchants, was insinuated by the ordinary wine dealers, concerning the role of the wine distributors (wijnverlaters) in the wine trade (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven 69(1929), p. 714). He was living in de Keyserin in the Warmoesstraet when he bought lots for 3 f. 12 st. in the Haarlem lottery of 1606 (GAA 21/35 F 146). On 23 February 1627, the honorable Guillaume Bert, with a procuration from the widow of Jan Rogiers (probably of R 27882), Reynier Gerritsz., ropemaker, for himself and in the place of his co-heirs from Gerrit Reyniersz. Vries, Dirck Alewijn, as the husband of Eva Stalpaert, Jan van Harinckhoeck, and Claes Willemsz., for themselves and their consorts, named Jacob Jansz. Fortuijn (of R 29635) to represent them in an affair concerning lands they possessed in Breder (?) Nieulant (NA 661, fol. 82, Not. Warnaerts). |

Buyer | Pieter van Geel |
Buyer Family | Geel, Pieter (Jansz. ?) van |
Buyer Notes | There were apparently at least two individuals named Pieter van Geel. One, Pieter Jansz. van Geel, was the son of Hans van Gheel I (of the present inventory) and the brother of Jan or Hans II (of R 37007) and of Maximiliaen van Geel (of R 21282). The other was Pieter Eliasz. van Geel, born in Antwerp about 1558, silk cloth dealer, who spent some time in Cologne before settling in Amsterdam, where he is first noted in 1598 (Gelderblom, Zuid-nederlandse kooplieden, p. 301 and Prosopographic Data Base). Together with his brother Maximiliaen and his cousin Elias van Geel, Pieter Jansz. van Geel invested 19,200 f. in the first subscription to V.O.C. shares. With Elias, he invested another 24,000 f. in the second subscription of 1612 (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, pp. 153 and 259.) In 1608, Pieter (Jansz.?) van Geel signed, again with Elias, the petition calling for the revocation of a prohibition on the use of cashiers to effect money transfers (Van Dillen, Wisselbanken, R.G.P. 59(1925), p. 16). On 30 July 1606, Pieter (Jansz.?) van Geel and his wife Sara Masseliers had their daughter Madelena baptized in the presence of Pieter Seegers, Dirck Alewijn, and Juffr. Catharina Slichers, the wife of Elias van Geel (DTB 4/171). Dirck Alewijn was married to Maria Schuurmans, the sister of Clara Scuurmans, the wife of Maximiliaen van Geel (the brother of Hans van Geel I). Pieter Eliasz. van Geel apparently died before the end of 1606 since his widow, living in the house of Daniel van Geel (II?), bought lots at the Haarlem lottery in 1606 (see R 31393). In 1606, Pieter (Jansz.?) van Geel was one of the collectors for Amsterdam of the Haarlem lottery. He bought lots for 3 f. 12 st., living in de Fortuyn in the Warmoesstraet, at his late father's address (GAA, 4/ 29 F 75). On 27 November 1619, Pieter (Jansz.) van Geel, together with his brother Maximiliaen and his cousin(?) Elias, were named guardians over the goods left by Pieter Elicaert which were inherited by Elicaert's daughter's children (WK 5073/513, fol. 178). Philips de Bacher (cited in the NOTES to R 8218) was apprenticed to Pieter (Jansz.) van Geel at the age of 21 with whom he learned the trade of silk dealer from 1604 to 1609 (Gelderblom, op.cit. p. 214). If it is correctly surmised that Pieter Eliasz. van Geel died in 1606, it was then Pieter Jansz. van Geel who went bankrupt in 1619 (Gelderblom, op.cit., p. 231). It is most likely that the buyer was Pieter Jansz. van Geel, the son of the owner of the goods sold. |

Buyer | Jasper Coeymans |
Buyer Family | Coeymans (Coymans), Jasper (Gaspar or Caspar) (I) |
Buyer Notes | At least three individuals named Jasper Coymans should be distinguished: 1) the probable buyer of this lot (I); his son (II); and the son of his son Coenradt (III). Jasper (or Gaspar) Coymans (I) was a merchant, born in Antwerp in 1551, who was first noted in Amsterdam in 1597 (Gelderblom, Zuid-Nederlandse kooplieden, p. 298). On 19 August 1600, Jasper Coeijmans, merchant on the Turffmarckt in t vergulde Sarasijns hooft, and his wife Isabeau van Lemens passed their testament. They revoked their testament made in Antwerp on 7 November 1585. They left some sums of money to the poor of the Reformed Duitsche gemeente. If he, testator, were to die, his remaining goods, after certain bequests, would be divided in half between his wife and his children Cornelia, Gaspar (Jasper) (II), Isabeau, Ceunraidt (Coenradt), Claerken (Clara), Henrick, Jacques, Susanneken, and Constantia (II). Isabeau would get compensation for the money that Heijndrick van Lemens, in company with Jasper, had borrowed. Thomas and Balthasar Coeijmans, the brothers of Jasper, were to be executors of the testament, together with Heijndrick de Haze; his (Jasper's) brother-in-law (Hendrick de Haze or Haes was married to Clara Coymans (I), one of the sisters of Jasper I; Abraham de Visscher (of R 38665); his (Jasper I's) son-in-law Heijndrick van Lemens; Jacques van Lemens; and Abraham van Lemens, all three brothers of Isabeau van Lemens (NA 10, fol.1999vo, Not. Sal. Henrix, Extracten). The Lemens family belonged to the Lutheran community. The merchant and spices dealer Abraham van Lemens I (cited above) was born in Antwerp about 1563. He was first noted in Amsterdam in 1590 and became a poorter of the city on 9 November 1605. He died between 1608 and 1610 (Gelderblom, Prosopographic Data Base and Zuid-Nederlandse kooplieden, p. 306). It is possible that Jacques van Lemmens, cited in this testament, is identical with the painter Jacques Lemmens, from Antwerp, who married Aelken Wouters, from Hamburg, at the age of 22, on 21 May 1622 (Briels, Vlaamse schilders, p. 351). Jaspar Coeymans (I) was said to be 50 years old when he made a declaration concerning the practice of letters of exchange on 11 July 1601. He assisted his daughter Cornelia, born in Antwerp, when she was betrothed to Abraham de Visscher on 3 July 1599. In 1606, he was living in the house of Dirck Honckelboer (I) (born in Antwerp about 1566, died in 1616) when he bought lots for 30 f. in the Haarlem lottery (GAA, 140/60 F 1023). In 1608, together with a number of other Amsterdam merchants, he signed a request to the burgomasters of Amsterdam requesting the revocation of the prohibition of cashiers in effecting money transfers (Van Dillen, Wisselbanken, R.G.P. 59(1925), p. 16). On 16 May 1611, Jasper Coijmans (I) living in de bont Koe on the O.Z. Voorburgwal, and his wife Isabeau van Lemens passed another testament. They left the poor of the Reformed Community 100 Flemish pounds (600 f.). Their oldest son, Jasper Coijmans II, who had behaved badly (zich heeft kwalijk gedragen) was to receive only his legitimate portion. The other heirs were the children listed above, plus Lucretia (the future wife of Pieter Cruijpenning), who seems to have been born after the last testament had been passed (NA 13, fol. 220, Not. Sal. Henrix, Extracten). On 9 January 1621, Jasper Coeymans I, merchant, living on the O.Z. Voorburgwal, revoked his testament. He left 8/9 of his goods to Coenraedt, Heyndrick, Jacques, Cornelia, Isabella, Susanna, Constantia, and Lucretia, and left the last 9th to be divided, half and half, between Jasper (II) and the latter's children. Jaspar (II) owed his father 2002 pounds vlaems. He had already received his mother's inheritance. The testator, in addition, left Lucretia a wedding gift of 500 pounds vlaems. He stipulated that the houses he owned should remain unsold for 20 years unless the government of the King of Spain should be restored (NA 17, fol. 20v, Not. S. Henrix, Extracten). Jasper Coeymans I was the brother of Maria Coeymans, the wife of Hans van Gheel I (of INVNO 785). He invested 18,000 f. in the first subscription to V.O.C. shares. His account at the Wisselbank filled 2 folios in 1612 and 3 folios in 1615 (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, pp. 204-205). In 1606, Casper (Jasper) I and his brother Balthasar Coeymans were summoned by the consistery of the Reformed church for allowing dancing to take place at the wedding of their niece Constantia (III) (daughter of their brother Jeronimus Coeymans and Margareta van der Bruggen) and Lenaert Ranst, which had taken place on the 16th of May of that year (H. Roodenburg. Onder censuur, 1990, pp. 324-5 and Elias, Vroedschap, p. 542). Note that there were three cousins named Constantia Coeymans: Jasper's own daughter; the daughter of Jeronimus, just cited; and the daughter of his brother Balthasar who married Pieter Belten de jonge (see R 32467). In 1616, Jasper was again reprimanded, this time for allowing dancing at the wedding of Margriet, the daughter of Arent ten Grootenhuis, whose guardian he had become after the death of her father (Herman Roodenburg, loc. cit.) Margriet Coeymans was married to Abraham Gonaert van de Graeff. On both this marriage and on Arent ten Grootenhuis, see the INTRO and TEXT of INVNO 540 (R 446 of Montias1.) On 17 July 1627, Coenradt Coeymans paid his brother Jasper Coeymans (II) 2617 f. for the inheritance the latter had received by testament from Jasper Coeymans I (WK 5073/789, fol 157). It is probable that the father had died by that time. An unidentified individual named Jasper Coeymans was buried on 18 December 1629 , but only 4 f. were paid to the church for his burial (DTB 1090/22vo.) According to Gelderblom, Jasper Coymans I died in 1627 (Prosopographic Data Base). Jasper Coeymans II, the son of Jasper I, drew up a procuration in French on 30 September 1630 authorizing Jean Epesteen to offer his invention for the making of leather cannons (!), which he claimed were lighter than, and as effective as, those made of bronze, to the King of France (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P. 78(1933), p. 730). The nephew of Jasper Coeymans I, also named Jasper Coeymans (III), the son of Coenrat Coeymans and of Maria Schuyl, was betrothed on 3 March 1644 to Elisabeth van Solt II, the niece of Hans van Solt de jonge of R 21567 and the daughter of Willem van Solt, the son of Hans van Solt I (of R 29281). Since Jasper III was only 9 years old in 1630, he could not be the individual who passed the procuration for the making of leather cannons (the information on Jasper Coeymans III was kindly supplied by Wout Spies and Marten Jan Bok who have reconstructed a partial genealogy of the Van Solt genealogy) (Spies and Bok, Fragment parenteel Van Solt). On 22 January 1645, Marija, the daughter of Jasper Coijmans III and Elisabeth van Solt was baptized in the O.K. in the presence of her grandparents Coenraet Coijmans and Maria Schuijl (DTB 8/40). One of the children of Jasper III and Elisabeth van Solt II was a son, Jasper Coijmans IV, baptized in the N.K. on 24 November 1647. Another was Constantia Coijmans IV baptized, along with her twin Catrijna, on 21 July 1650. |

Buyer Notes | The buyer was deurwaerder van de Admiraliteyt. He invested 300 f. in the first subscription to V.O.C. shares (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, p. 251). On 3 August 1591, Jean de Tronquoy, from Namen (Namur), 35 years old, living with Doctor Silla, pensionaris deser stede, assisted by Doctor Silla's wife, was betrothed to Margaret de Bruijn, from Brussel, 21, assisted by her father Denijs de Bruijne and her mother Maycken Etterbeeck (DTB 406/59). Doctor Silla (1543-1600), pensionary of Amsterdam, was also from Namen (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 1358). On 8 November 1598, Jan de Troncoen and Margerite de Bruijn had their daughter Belitje baptized in the N.K. in the presence of the Schout Willem van der Does (DTB 38/686). He remarried with Aachie Bremans on 25 November 1616. On 28 April 1650, Aachie Bremans, widow of Jan Tronquoij, appeared before the notary Joost van de Ven and had her assets inventorized ( NA 1093, fol. 1290-1, INVNO 955). Buyer Notes | Andries Martensz. de Graeuw (or Grauw or Grau), born in Antwerp, was a merchant in silk cloth residing in 't gulden Laken in the Warmoesstraet (Gelderblom, Zuid-Nederlandse kooplieden, p. 302). On 2 August 1586, Andries de Grauwe, widower of Hendrickje Moorinne, was betrothed to Maaike Delijs, widow of Michiel de Winge (DTB 665/45). On 1 April 1588, the couple had a child baptized in the presence of Anna Heijckens (DTB 1/355). After Maaiken's death, on 15 April 1600, already living in the Warmoesstraet, he was betrothed to Clara van Dalen, the daughter of Floris van Dalen of R 21369 (DTB 409/151). Andries de Graeuw became a citizen of Amsterdam in 1589. He invested 1800 f. in V.O.C. shares in the first subscription (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, p. 137). He died in 1617 (INVNO 682 and INVNO 6820). The individual of the same name who paid a tax of 400 f. in 1631 was his son, Andries de Graeuw de jonge (Kohier, fol. 11 vo.) Clara de Grau, who may have been the daughter of Andries de Graeuw II, was a member of the Reformed Community. In 1640, she and Govaert van Heusden asked the Church Council to intervene with her grandmother and the guardians so that they might lawfully wed (the couple had eloped to Culemborg) (Roodenburg, Onder het censuur, p. 264). |

Buyer | Jan Valckenborch |
Buyer Family | Valckenborch, Jan (van) |
Buyer Notes | At least two individuals were called Jan van Valckenborch (Valckenburch, Valckenburg) in early 17th century Amsterdam. Jan van Valckenburch II, born circa 1573, was married to Gertruyd Hermans. However, it is more likely that our buyer was the silk cloth merchant Jan van Valckenburg I, who was married to Elisabeth Michiels van Varlaer. He was born in Antwerp and already lived in Amsterdam in 1585, on the O.Z. Achterburgwal. Later he moved to the Warmoesstraet on the corner of the Papenbrugsteeg (in de Twee Lepelaers, which he had bought from Arnout Cobbaut (II) in 1596). On 23 August 1596, Sr. Jan van Valckenburch, merchant in silk cloth, requested a deposition concerning the bad quality of silk velvet cloth that had been delivered to him (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven, R.G.P. 69(1929), p. 534). Jan and Elisabeth were the parents of Elizabeth van Valckenburgh, born in Antwerp in 1578, who was 26 years old when she was betrothed to the future poet Jacob Cats, from Brouwershaven, on 26 April 1605 (Oud Holland 7(1889), p. 174). Another daughter of the couple, named Anna van Valckenburgh (1563-1633) married Aernout Cobbaut II (1555-1630) of R 21250. According to Van Dillen, Jan van Valckenburgh, who invested 3600 f. in the first subscription for V.O.C. shares, died in 1603 (Van Dilen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, p. 190). This, however, may be Jan van Valckenburch II, inasmuch as Jan van Valckenburch I seems to have been alive in 1607. On 21 September of that year, Elisabeth Michiels, loco Jan van Valckenburgh, was present as a witness to the baptism of Johannes, son of Jacob Cats and Elisabeth van Valckenborgh in a church in Middelburgh (Oud Holland 7(1889), p. 175). After the death of Jan van Valckenburgh I, his widow Elisabeth Michiels van Varlaer, continued to deal in her husband's silk cloth business (Gelderblom, Zuid-Nederlandse kooplieden, p. 316). On 4 November 1623, the heirs of Joffr. Elisabeth Michiels van Varlaer. widow of Johan van Valckenburch (I), for herself and with a procuration from her sister Margriete, heiress of Marcus de Vogelaer, Marcus van Valckenburch (of INVNO 1238), Willem van Wely as husband and guardian of Maria van Valckenburch, and Mr. Fabian de Vliet, advocaat, husband and guardian of Susanna van Valckenburch (I), sold the house de Twee Lepelaers to Hans Verveelen, merchant (Kam, Waar was dat huis in de Warmoesstraat?, 1968 37/5). The siblings of Elisabeth van Valckenburgh (married to Jacob Cats) included Margrieta (who died in 1638 or later), Mattheus van Valckenburg (I ?) (see R 20483); Marcus van Valckenburg who married Catharina Christoffels Guingette (Quingetti); Maria van Valckenburgh, betrothed to Willem van Weely of R 21266 on 8 December 1608; Lucas van Valckenburgh (of R 36238) who was betrothed to Susanna Coymans on 4 July 1619 (ibid. p. 177); and Susanna van Valckenburch I, who, on 29 September 1610, was betrothed to Mr. Fabianus de Vliet, from Antwerp, licentiate in law, assisted by his stepfather Michiel van Bylaer and by his neve Antonius Tysius (ibid. p. 181.) Antonius Tysius or Thijsius, professor of theology, was married to Janneken de Raedt of R 36150. It may be Jan van Valckenburgh de oude (I) who was a witness at the baptism of Jaspar, the son of Jan van Valckenborch de jonge (III), in the Lutheran Church on 18 October 1611. The other witnesses were Joachim Mathijsz. and Claerken Fellebier (DTB 138/123). It is likely that Susanna van Valckenburch II, who was married to Willem Seulijns, was his daughter. Both Susanna and Willem seem to have died in 1629 (see the inventory of the couple in NA 562B, 3-13 November 1629). |

Buyer | Marten Spil |
Buyer Family | Spil, Marten |
Buyer Notes | Marten Spil or Spiel was a wine dealer in the Warmoesstraet who regularly delivered wine to the city. He was taxed 22 f. in 1585 (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, pp. 119-120.) The members of the Compagnie van Verre regularly met in his house in the Warmoesstraet around 1600 (C. van Romburgh, Beredeneerd Register op de Werken der Linschoten-Vereeniging, The Hague, 1957, p. 1681). On 13 June 1569, Marten Spil and his wife Eecht Tonis had their daughter Marie baptized in the O.K. in the presence of Aes (?) Erich, Meynert Barentsz., and Hendrixgen Pieters (DTB 1/71). He (or his son of the same name) apparently remarried at some time with Trijntgen Dignum. He invested 3,000 f. in the first subscription for V.O.C. shares (Van Dillen, ibid.) He was living op de hoeck van de Molsteegh in 1606 when he bought lots for 15 f. in the Haarlem lottery (F 4/12 F 25). He was buried on 3 January 1607 (DTB 1043/16). On 23 February 1607, a sale (consisting only of clothing) was held of his goods. They raised 314 f. On 2 July 1609, the proceeds were paid to Frederick ten Bergh and Dirck Jacobsz. Heijn as guardians of Spil's grandchild (WK 5073/942). Frederick ten Berch died before 1631 when his heirs, living on the Singel, paid a tax of f. 62:10:-- (Kohier fol.16, p.5). On 21 January 1630, the heirs of Marten Spil and Trijntgen Dignum offered a house for sale on the Warmoesstraet (no. 170), called De Baert, on the corner of the Molstegje. It was bought by Hans Aux Brebis II (of R 25592), for 18,200 f. (Kam, Waar was dat huis in de Warmoesstraat?, 1968 33/15). |
