BuyerSoutholm
Buyer FamilySoutholm
Buyer NotesThe buyer may be Gerrit Hendricksz. Southolm who died in the same year as the present sale. He lived in de drie kievitten on the Nieuwen Dijck. On 9 March 1601, Gerrit Southolm, merchant in Amsterdam, freighted a ship with Jacob Jacobsz. from Monnikendam to sail to Norway to fetch lumber (Winkelman, Bronnen voor de geschiedenis van de Nederlandse Oostzeehandel R.G,P., 184(1983), p. 11). On 25 March 1625, Weyntgen Raephorst assisted by Willem Raephorst, her father and guardian, brought some assets (including a house op 't Water and soap-boiling works) to the Orphan Chamber on behalf of her daughter Rachel whose father was Heyndrick Gerritsz. Southolm (the son of Gerrit Hendricksz. Southolm) (WK 5073/789). Aeltjen (or Aefken) Jacobs (of R 31895), the widow of Gerrit Hendricksz., remarried with schipper Jacob Jacobsz. Seeuw, who may be the schipper Jacob Jacobsz. just cited. Jacob Jacobsz. Seeuw had apparently been married previously with Anna Tonis (see the NOTES to R 27751).

BuyerMr. Pieter schilder
Buyer FamilyPietersz., Pieter I
Buyer NotesThe buyer is likely to be Pieter Pietersz., the son of Pieter Aertsen (Lange Pier), who was born in Antwerp ca. 1540, moved to Amsterdam around 1555, then to Haarlem, where he registered in the guild of St. Luke in 1575, finally back to Amsterdam where he stayed until his death in 1603. He was married to Magdalena Pieters, the daughter of a glass painter. The buyer may also be Pieter Pietersz. de jonge (jonge Lange Pier), but the latter would probably not have been called Mr. Pieter during his father's life time. On Pieter Pietersz. I, see M.J. Bok in Dawn of the Golden Age, Exh. Cat. pp. 313-4. On Pieter Pietersz. II see R 30980. Beside his son Pieter, Pieter Pietersz. I had two daughters: Truytgen, born in Haarlem in 1580, who married the painter Dirck Pietersz. Bontepaert (of R 20948), and Trijntje, born in 1582, who married the painter Evert Crijnsz. van der Maes (betrothal, 18 October 1606) (Oud Holland 5(1887), p. 14).

BuyerPieter van Buyren in de Herp op de Nieuwen Dijck
Buyer FamilyBuyren (Buren), Pieter van (I)
Buyer NotesOn 9 September 1595, Pieter van Buerren, from Dantzig, 28 years old, assisted by his brother Willem van Buren, was betrothed to Riucken Aggetes (signs Riuken Ages), 19, assisted by her father Agge Jerichsz. (DTB 407/263). Agge Jerichsz. (or Jarichs) was a merchant who bought hennip and rice in 1595 (Winkelman, Bronnen voor de geschiedenis van de Nederlandse Oostzeehandel R.G.P. 178(1981), pp. 57-8). Later Pieter van Buyren (I) was married to Hendrickgen Augustijns when the couple had their daughter Fockel baptized in the O.K. in the presence of Susanna Jaspers. On this occasion, Pieter van Bueren was said to be a merchant (DTB 3/274). Pieter van Bueren I was probably the brother of Reynier Reyniersz. van Bueren of R 31437. Pieter van Buren (II), baptized on 14 October 1612, was the son of Reynier Reyniersz. van Bueren (DTB 5/37). He was also a wine dealer. He was betrothed to Ida van Gerven, the daughter of the prominent wine dealer Isaack van Gerwen (of INVNO 237), on 28 March 1634 (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P., 144(1974), p.401-406 and DTB 442/139). On 10 October 1641, Pieter van Buren (II) and Ida van Gerwen had their son Cornelis baptized in the Remonstrant Church (DTB 301).

BuyerMr. Henrick Cock
Buyer FamilyCock, Mr. Henrick (Jansz.) I
Buyer NotesOn 17 November 1581, Heijndrick Cock and Nies Jans had their son Heijndrick baptized in the O.K. On this occasion he was said to be a schorteldoeckverver (cloth dyer) (DTB 1/181). Hendrick Cock (I) was said to be a blauverver (blue dyer), living in the Halsteeg, when he was taxed 10 f. in 1585 (Van Dillen, Amsterdam in 1585, p. 7). His widow Agnieta (Nies) Jans, the daughter of Jan Selijns, invested 4,800 f. in the first subscription to V.O.C. shares (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister p. 128). On the estate left by Hendrick Jansz. Cock, see WK 5073/889, 3 March 1620). Hendrick Cock I was the father of Maritgen Cocks (or Cocqs), whom he assisted when she was betrothed to Hans Lenaerts of Cologne on 6 November 1593 (Oud Holland, 3 (1885), p. 158). It was probably Hendrick Hendricksz. Cock, the son of Hendrick Jansz. Cock, baptized in 1581, (cited also in the NOTES to R 34387) who bought lots for f. 12 stuivers in the Haarlem lottery of 1606 (GAA 26/97 F 191). At the time he was said to be living in the Halsteegh in Maastricht (where his father had already been living in 1585). Hendrick Jansz. Cock (II), cited in R 24191, seems to have been an otherwise unrecorded son of Jan Cock and a grandson of Hendrick Cock I. (On 10 July 1627, he was said to be the neve (nephew in this case) of Maria Cocx (see the TEXT to INVNO 568)). Anneken Cocx and Agniesien Cocx, who married the wine dealer Wolphert Webber (of R 20317) before 1608, were daughters of Hendrick Jansz. Cock I.
