BuyerJan Colyn
Buyer FamilyColyn (Colijn), Jan
Buyer NotesJan Colijn was born in Antwerp on 21 November 1548. He married Else Michiels, daughter of Michiel Hendricksz. and Drieske Pieters Moermans (Jaarboek C.B.G. 14(1960), p. 64). According to another source, Elsgen Michiels, wife of Jan Colijn, inherited a plot of land on the Warmoesstraet from Stijntje Noormans (Moermans ?) in 1599. She was the sister of Willempgen Michiels, married to Jan Jansz. Oly, and of Pieter Michielsz. (not the city carpenter of INVNO 233) (Maandblad Amstelodamum 53(1966), p. 213). Jan Colijn was a merchant and freighter of ships in Amsterdam at least since 1594 (Winkelman, Bronnen voor de geschiedenis van de Nederlandse Oostzeehandel, R.G.P., 178(1981), p.13.) He was the father of several book dealers: Claes, Michiel (of R 22124), Emanuel (of R 24926), and Hendrick (R 26959). He died shortly before 4 May 1607 when some of his possessions were auctioned off by the Orphan Chamber (INVNO 758, R 661 of Montias1).

BuyerGovert van Arckel
Buyer FamilyArckel (Erckel), Govert (Godefryt, Godefried) van
Buyer NotesAccording to Arjan Poelwijk (In Dienste vant suyckerbacken, p.256), the sugar refiner Godefried van Arckel was born in Breda, perhaps in 1578. His year of death is not known. He was active as sugar refiner from 1620 to 1637 (ibid.) On 18 December 1599, Godefroij van Arckel, living on the O.Z. Kerckhoff, was betrothed to Agatha Conincs (DTB 762a/126). Godefridt van Erckel invested 3,000 f. on behalf of Hans de l'Hommel, living in Hamburg, and 1,500 f. for himself in the first subscription for V.O.C. shares. He had an account of 1 folio in the Wisselbank in 1612, 2 in 1615, with his brother Isaack van Erckel of R 23587, and 3 in 1620, also with Isaack van Erckel (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, p. 182). He remarried with Sara Michiels van Varlaer. On 26 July 1620, he and his wife Sara Michiels baptized their son Godefrijt in the presence of Eduart van Domselaer in the O.K. (DTB 5/323). Eduart (or Evert) van Domselaer was married to Clara Michiels van Verlaer, the sister of Sara van Verlaer. The son of Evert van Domselaer and Clara Michiels, named Tobias van Domselaer, baptized on 27 October 1611 in the O.K., became Regent of the Schouwburg and contributed to descriptions of Amsterdam (I. van Eeghen, Illustraties van de 17de eeuwse beschrijvingen en plaatwerken van Amsterdam Jaarboek Amstelodamum 66(1974), p.97). Godefried van Erckel and Sara van Verlaer drew up their testament in October 1624. Sara must have died between that date and February 1625 when the Orphan Chamber steered the inheritance from Sara Michiels van Varlaer to her three children, Tobias, 3, Sara, 2, and Anna 9 months (Poelwijk, op.cit. p. 186). The inheritance amounted to f. 25,000. In 1631, Govert van Erckel, living on the Wester Voorburchwal, paid a tax of 250 f. (Kohier, fol. 239, p. 55). Godefrijt or Govert van Erckel (also Arckel) I was the brother-in-law of the sugar refiner Hans de l'Hommel, whose prenuptial contract with Judith Cobbaut, the daughter of Arnout Cobbaut II of R 21250, was signed on 2 March 1617. Evert (or Eduart) van Domselaer, cited above, was the neef (nephew or, less likely, cousin) of Hans de l'Hommel (GAA, NA 15, not. Salomon Henrix). On or about 10 May 1634, Goddert Cronenburgh, 35, and Jochem Swager, 30, testified at the request of Godefrit van Arckel that they had processed (uytgewerckt) 287 loaves of sugar from St. Thomas that had been sent to Middelburg (NA 694B, film 4980, Not. J. Warnaerts). On 14 July 1635, Sr. Jan de Marees (probably of R 27426) had notary Sybrant Cornelissen notify Godefrit van Erckel, merchant, that he must pay a letter of exchange with a face value of 136 pounds Flemish (916 f.) There were rumors that Van Erckel was insolvent and absent. His son (unnamed) said his father was not at home (NA 642, film 4953). Another letter of exchange was claimed by Michiel Pele in Middelburg on 28 July of that same year (NA 772, Not. Verhey). It is clear from the following document that Godefried van Arckel I went bankrupt in 1635 or 1636. On 2 August 1636, Godefried's son Jan insinuated Philips Pelt (of R 28903) in the house of Daniel de la Barre and Guliame Bartolotti, court-appointed curators of the bankrupt estate of Godefried van Arckel, notifying them that the court had ordered that the estate should be turned over to the insinuant (Jan van Arckel) (NA 315, fol. 75vo). (On 8 June 1624, Daniel de la Barre, 21, was said to be a journeyman smith when he was betrothed to Mary Jans, from Worcum (DTB 429/160)). On 15 August 1636, Jan van Arckel insinuated Abraham Anthonisz. (of R 20033) regarding the estate of his (Jan's) father (NA 315, fol. 101).
