BuyerHogendorp voor idem [Jan Otten Munter]
Buyer FamilyHogendorp (voor Jan Otten Munter)
Buyer NotesHogendorp may possibly be Johan (or Hans) van Hogendorp, sworn refiner of gold and essayeur, who, according to the terms of a contract he signed with the goldsmith Augustijn Pas (Pars) (probably the son of Augustijn Pas I of R 20476) on 27 June 1634, engaged Pas to learn the art of separating gold and silver for three months. Pas bound himself to pay 250 f. per year to Hogendorp for his life long to acquire the skill plus the equipment Hogendorp would furnish (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven, R.G.P. 144(1974), p. 56-7). Johan Hogendorp was appointed essayeur and ward of the Wisselbank, in place of Meynert Casparsz. on 27 November 1637 (Van Dillen, Wisselbanken, R.G.P. 59(1925), p. 78). Hans van Hogendorp, 30 years old, from Antwerp, was betrothed to Maria Griet Janss Stroock on 23 November 1600. On 25 April 1618, he remarried with Baefken Hermans, widow of Boede Cornelisz. He was the brother of Susanna van Hogendorp who married the predikant Petrus Plancius (of R 39807?) on 16 August 1616 (Nederlandsche Leeuw 73(1956), col. 240-241). Another, less likely, possibility is Albert van Hogendorp, married to Weyntge Rykes, who died before 31 October 1619, when he was said to be wijlen (NA 212, film 111). Jan Otten Munter may be related to the well-known merchant Jan Jansz. Munter (1570-1617) but no person by this name cropped up in the Munter genealogy in the Nederlandsche Leeuw (20(1981), col. 73-78). A deposition by a carpenter who was said to have worked for Jan Munter on the Heerengracht, dated 17 March 1616, may refer either to Jan Jansz. Munter I, cited above, or to his son Jan Jansz. Munter II, who also lived on the Heerengracht (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven, R.G.P. 78(1933), p. 149). In any case the following documents cannot refer to Jan Jansz. Munter I who was already dead by the time they were issued. In a notarial declaration dated 16 September 1636, Claes Jansz. and his wife Marritie Michiels declared that Jan Munter had bought tulip bulbs, with their outgrowths, together with Pieter Dircksz. (perhaps the father of Jan Pietersz. Neckevelt, also a buyer of tulip bulbs, of R 23594), for 14 Flemish pounds (84 f.) (Posthumus in Economisch-historisch Jaarboek 18(1934), pp. 232-3). In 20 June 1637, Claes Jansz., on one side, and Pieter Dircksz., for himself and representing his swager Jan Munter, entered into an agreement whereby the first-named would keep the tulip bulbs that he now has in hands and would be paid according to the prices stated in the schedule (of 16 September 1636). If Pieter Dircksz., the brother-in-law of Jan Munter, was the father of Jan Pietersz. Neckevelt, it is not known how the connection arose (ibid. pp. 237-80.) The following document may help to clear up the confusion of names. On 26 July 1632, Sara van Tongerloo, widow of Jan Munter de oude, now married to Anthony Moens, her guardian, item Jan Munter de jonge, replacing his younger brother Dirck Munter, named Pieter Cleutrijn (cited in the NOTES to R 27441), merchant, to collect money from Enoch Rijssers in Hamburg (NA 843, fol. 219, Not. Hoogeboom). It is not known whether Jan Munter, stone dealer, who was said to be 42 years old when he made a deposition at the request of Engel van Dulcken, is identical with Jan (Jansz.?) Munter de jonge (NA 1601, fol. 137, Not. W. Hasen). Engel van Dulcken was almost certainly the brother-in-law of Marten Kretser of R 24697.

Buyersolvit [crossed out: Cornelis Bitter]
Buyer FamilyBitter, Cornelis (de)
Buyer NotesCornelis de Bitter, 34 years old, was betrothed on 28 April 1590 to Dieuwerken Dircksdr., living in Medemblik. He was assisted by his neef Jan Petain (DTB 762/89). He invested 900 f. in the first subscription to V.O.C. shares (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, p. 148). In 1606, Cornelis Janszoon de Bitter, living on the N.Z. Acherburchwal near the Molsbrug, bought lots in the Haarlem lottery. Cornelis Janszoon Soet and Cornelis Brouwer on the advice of Cornelis de Bitter, also bought lots (for 1 f. 16 st. and 3 sch. resp.) (GAA, 87/39 F654, F128/5 F928). He was buried in the O.K., coming from the Molsbrug, in the house de Schrijvende Hand, on 14 June 1621. 23 f. were paid to the church on his behalf (DTB 1044/68).

BuyerClaes Halvemaen
Buyer FamilyHalvemaen, Claes
Buyer NotesClaes Pietersz. Halvemaen may have been a butcher or cattle dealer, mentioned in a dispute between the tax collector on cattle and the butchers of Amsterdam on 19 August 1620 (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P. 78(1933), pp. 369-370.) On 24 March 1596, a child of Claes Pietersz. Halvemaen was buried (DTB 1052/109vo.) On 5 June 1636, Stijntgen Jacobs, the widow of Klaes Halvemaen, was buried (DTB 1045/82vo.) There is possible confusion in identifying this buyer because Claes Pietersz. van Vierhuysen was also called Halvemaen (De buurhuizen van Het Glashuis Maandblad Amstelodamum 58(1971)). However, Claes Pietersz. van Vierhuysen had died before 1607 when his heirs sold the house te Kleef to Giert Jansdr. (Jaarboek Amstelodamum 80(1988), p. 49).

Gerard Seus was perhaps the brother of Jan Zeux (or Seeu). In 1631, Jan Jacobsz. Seeu, living on the N.Z. Voorburchwal, paid a tax of 60 f. (Kohier, fol. 275vo, p. 63). Jacob Jacobsz. BuyerJacques Storm
Buyer FamilyStorm, Jacques
Buyer NotesThe buyer is likely to have been Jacob Storm, merchant in Venice, who was married to Geertruy Benningh. He would have been about 22 years old at the time of the present sale. On 9 July 1620, Jacob Storm, from Zeeland, 40 years old, living in Brouwershaven, was betrothed to Giertje Bennings, 28, her mother's consent to be submitted by Nicolaes Hasselaer (DTB 425/6). Giertje Benning, in the house of Pieter Haspeler (Hasselaer), bought lots in the 1606 lottery (106/10 F 782). Giertje may be identical with Margriet Benningh (1565-1641), the second wife of Dirck Pietersz. Hasselaer. She was the daughter of Jan Gerritsz. Benningh and Weyntge Pieters Kies (Elias, Vroedschap van Amsterdam p. 205). On 25 January 1636, Gerrit Beninck, acting on behalf of Jacomo Storm, merchant in Venice, agreed with Gillis Tayspel (cited in the NOTES to R 21507) to have the latter's son Johannes travel as quickly as possible to Venice to serve in Storm's business. Johannes would receive 100 f. a year (NA 414A, sheaf 66, Not. Nic. and Jacob Jacobsz.) Gerrit Benninck may have been Storm's brother-in-law, the son of Jan Gerritsz. Benningh. The daughter of the couple, named Magdalena Julia, born in Venice in 1626, married Jeronimus de Haze de jonge on 10 April 1646 (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 601). On Jeronimus de Haze de jonge, see R 29604.
