Buyerde weduwe van Rutgert Aertsz.
Buyer FamilyAertsz., Rutgert (weduwe van)
Buyer NotesOn 4 May 1602, Rutjert Aertsz., hatmaker, widower of Tanneken Huyberts, was betrothed to Catelijne Guldemont, from The Hague (illiterate) (DTB 762a/166). On 18 June 1603, Rutjert Aertsz., widower of Catelijne Guldemonts was betrothed to Trijntje Cornelis (DTB 410/306). On 17 August 1604, Rutgert Aertsz. and Trijntge Cornelis had their son Aert baptized in the N.K. (DTB 39/44). Trijntge Cornelis was presumably the buyer of this lot (unless Rutgert Aertsz. married a fourth time). Between 1591 and 1602, Rutgert Aertsen, merchant in Amsterdam, freighted 1 ship; he freighted 6 ships between 1603 and 1608, some by himself, some in partnership with Arent Pietersen van der Burcht, Frans Wolfertsen, and Dirck Queeckel (IJzerman, Economisch-historisch Jaarboek 17(1931), p. 268; Winkelman, Bronnen voor de geschiedenis van de Nederlandse Oostzeehandel R.G.P. 184(1983), p. 599.) In 1597, he was involved with the grain trade with Dantzig (Winkelman, op.cit. 178(1981), pp. 106, 107). On Dirck Queeckel, see Notes to R 22124.

BuyerWybrandt Pau
Buyer FamilyPau, Wybrandt
Buyer NotesThe buyer was probably the important soap boiler Wybrant Pauw, who owned not only de Vergulde hand but also de blinde esel on the Damrak. According to Elias (Vroedschap van Amsterdam, p.91), Wybrant Pietersz. Pauw, the owner of these two soap-boiling works, was buried on 31 December 1624, three and a half months before the present sale. Yet the relation of the buyer to Sebastiaen Egbertsz., the owner of the goods sold (see below), would seem to confirm the identification. Still, there is a contradiction here which has not been resolved. Wybrand Pietersz. Pauw, born about 1576, was the son of Pieter Jansz. Pauw and Dieuwer Jacobs, his second wife (his first wife was Geetruyd Laurens Spiegel, the sister of Pieter Laurens Spiegel de oude of R 7612). Dieuwer Jacobs had previously been married to Egbert Meynderstsz, the father of Sebastian Egbertsz. of the present inventory (Nederlandsche Leeuw 42(1924), col. 309). Wybrant Pietersz. Pauw was betrothed to Aeltje Jans on 5 February 1605 (DTB 411/422). Aeltje Jans was the sister of Egbertus Johannis Bodaeus, inspector of the Collegium Medicum, the father of Jasper Egbertsz. Bodaeus of INVNO 1196. After the death of Wybrand Paeuw, his widow remarried with Martinus van Toll (betrothal on 17 December 1627, DTB 432/499). He freighted 3 ships between 1601 and 1608 (Winkelman, Bronnen voor de geschiedenis van de Nederlandse Oostzeehandel R.G.P., 184(1983), p. 602). Mr. Pieter Pauw of Leyden bought bulbs at the auction of Pieter Pietersz. on 25 September 1626. He could not have died, unmarried, in Alkmaar, on 2 August 1626, as per Elias (Vroedschap, p. 199). Neither can he be identical with Dr. Pieter Pauw (1564-1617), professor of medicine at the University of Leyden, who was the son of Pieter Jansz. Pauw, buried on 16 October 1588 (Elias, op.cit. p.90) Dr. Pieter Pauw, cited in the following document, was probably a close relative of Wijbrant Pauw. On 5 December 1637, Dr. Pieter Pauw, living in Leyden, leased to Hendrick van der Hoeve, living in this city op 't water the house de Vergulde Hand (NA 866, fol.496vo., Not. van Zwieten).

Buyerden Generael Reael
Buyer FamilyReael, den Generael (Laurens)
Buyer NotesThe buyer is likely to be Laurens Reael, commander of ships sent to East Indies, governor general of Netherlandish East Indies 1616-1619 etc.. He was born in 1583 and died on 21 October 1637 (Elias, Vroedschap van Amsterdam, p. 391). On 17 July 1629, Laurens Reael was betrothed to Susanna de Moor, widow of Heijndrick de Pickere (DTB 434/230). She was the daughter of Bartholomeus Moor (R 21230) and of Maria Niquet. Lourens (Jacobsz.) Reael who was commissary of the Wisselbank and paid a tax of 300 f. (Kohier, fol. 5, p. 3) was his father, a prominent member of the Reformed community but also known for his drunkenness (Roodenburg, Onder censuur, Hilversum, 1990, p. 342). Immediately preceding this lot, the following lot had been recorded by mistake (per abuijs): 1 schildery van Abraham en Agar f 9:--:--, buyer Christoffel Croeser. On Christoffel Croeser, see R 20410.
