BuyerJan Muller de vrous broeder
Buyer FamilyMuller, Jan (Harmensz.)
Buyer NotesThe buyer was the brother of the wife of the late Pieter Dircksen Brevliet. He was therefore the well-known draughtsman and engraver Jan Hermansz. Muller, who was active in Amsterdam from 1589 to 1625. He was baptized in the O.K. (when it was still R.C.) on 1 July 1571, as the son of Harmen Jansz. Muller and Meynsgen Ariaens van der Veer. On 14 January 1619, Jan Muller, plate engraver, Meester Adriaen Muller, licentiate in law, secretary of the city of Emmerick, Pieter Dircksz. Brevliet (of this inventory), as husband and guardian of Lysbeth Harmans, Hillegont Harmans, assisted by her guardian Jan Valcxsz. (of R 21679),in view of the absence of her husband, and Marritge Harmans, assisted by Mr. Jan Pietersz. Sem (the brother of Syvert Pietersz. Sem of R 27934), her chosen guardian, all children and heirs of the late Harmen Jansz. Muller, figuersnijder (engraver of figures) and of Meynsge Adriaens van der Veer, declared that they had all received their due portions of the inheritance. However, it was resolved that Marritge Harmans should keep the house de Gulden Passer in the Warmoesstraet, but she should have the pay the debts of the estate and give 400 f. each to Johan (Jan Muller), Mr. Adriaen, and Pieter Dircksz. (Brevliet) (N. de Roever, Jan Harmensz. Muller, Oud Holland 3(1885), pp. 271-2). Jan Muller apparently never married. He passed his testament on 11 August 1624. He left his books to his brother Adriaen Muller, except for the art books (die van const tractieren) which he left to Dirck Pietersz., son of Pieter Dircksz. (Brevliet), for his studies. He left to his sister Lysbeth his signet ring and, to his sister Hillegont, the life long usufruct of a house in the Goyerssteechgen. He left (before his death) all his household goods to his sister Marritgen, including a portrait of the testator's father and a tondo of the Mount of Calvary drawn with the pen, but excluded two Italian paintings from the bequest. He left to Jan Adriaensz., the son of his sister Hillegont, a book containing all his engraved prints from the first printing and a book of 20 nudes engraved by the testator after Michelangelo. To Meijnsgen Mullers, the daughter of his sister Hillegont, he left 300 f. because she was named after his mother; to Aeltgen Mullers, the daughter of his brother Adriaen, a diamond ring and ruby ring; and to Claertgen Pieters, the daughter of his sister Lysbeth a painting or portrait of Pater Johan Neyen (Jan Neij, a R.C. priest whose image often turned up in R.C. homes). He further willed that his prints and plates not be sold for a year and six weeks after his death. Jan Pietersz. Sem and Cornelis Dircxsz. Cool witnessed the testament, which was passed in Muller's house in the Warmoesstraat (Oud Holland 27(1909), pp. 231-2). From the mention in the testament of the portrait of pater Jan Ney (not Mey, as in the article in Oud Holland), we can infer that Muller was R.C. This inference is strengthened by two family connections. The book dealer Cornelis Dircxsz. Cool (the husband of Muller's sister Maritge Hermans) who witnessed the will was first married to a daughter of Jacob Gijsbertsz. or Gijsberti, the prominent R.C. notary. Cornelis Cool was a friend of the poet Joost van den Vondel. On 19 December 1651, Vondel wrote a letter to the voorzienigen en kunstlievenden Kornelis Diedricksz. Kool (De Roever, op. cit. p. 269 and J.W. Unger, Vondeliana, Oud Holland 2(1884), p.301). On 29 April 1625, Cornelis Dircxsz. Cool was named guardian over the minor-age children of Willem Aertsz., wine dealer (of INVNO 759) (WK 5073/513, fol. 37). Furthermore, Jan Pietersz. Sem, named above, was the brother of Syvert Pietersz. Sem, whose wife Marritge Bouwers was most probably R.C. (see R 300 of Montias1 and INVNO 302). On the Muller and Brevliet families, see also the TEXT of R 722 of Montias1. On 27 July 1634, Cornelis Dircksz. Cool delivered to the Orphan Chamber the sum of 1,100 f. due to the children of Gerrit de Rijcke (WK 5073/789).

Buyer NotesThe buyer was a relative of Van Brevliet (or of his wife), but the exact relationship could not be ascertained.
