BuyerJacob Schimmel
Buyer FamilySchimmel, Jacob
Buyer NotesThe buyer was an important maker of pistols, armor, swords, and other arms (zwaardveger). On 1 August 1615, Jacob Schimmel, from Deuticum, swaertveger (sword maker, armorer), 24 years old, having lived 4 years in the Gravenstraet, was betrothed to Anneken Raesvelt, about 40, living in the O.Z. Achterburchwal (DTB 419/181). After the death of his first wife, he remarried with Marritie Pieters Lickesdochter, widow of Dirck Evertsz. (betrothal, 8 February 1631, DTB 437/85). In 1621, he contributed various arms to a lottery organized with the help of Vermeer's grandmother, but the lottery was aborted on order of a substitute sheriff (Montias, Vermeer and His Milieu, pp. 41-2, 46). On 24 May 1630, he contracted with an armor-maker from The Hague to make armors for joint profit. Schimmel was expected to concentrate on the purchase and sale aspects of the business. A week later, three armorers from Delft gave him power-of-attorney to make arrangements for their transfer to Amsterdam to practice the trade of armor-making (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P.78(1933), pp. 708-9). In 1631, he paid a tax of 5 f., at which time he lived on the Nieuwebrugsteech, near the Warmoesstraet (Kohier, fol. 104 vo., p. 25). On 5 June 1632, Jacob Schimmel signed a contract with the arms maker Mr. Jan Engelsen (not identical with the attorney Jan Engels of R 7620). By the terms of the contract, Mr. Jan Engels was to deliver various cuirasses (NA 943, film 1166, Notary Arent Jansz. Engel). Could Reynier Engels, the sergeant in the Nightwatch have been the son of the armsmaker Jan Engels (and the brother of the notary Arent Jansz. Engel)? On 14 June 1634, Jacob Schimmel armorer (zwaardveger) bought one of two houses on the Uyterste Steiger, north of the Rockin, owned by the Regents of the city, which had once been inhabited by Carel van Mander (I. van Eeghen, Het sterfhuis van Carel van Mander Maandblad Amstelodamum 63(1976), p. 124). On 21 (or 29) June 1638, June 1638, Jacob Schimmel, swordmaker, insinuated Thomas Jacobsz. Haringh, concierge (of R 20905) regarding the executive sale of Schimmel's household possessions and of a house belonging to him in the Lindeboomscruijstraet. The inboel had been transferred in full possession to Jan and Jacob van der Marckt. Schimmel apparently claimed that the house, in which an arms maker was living, still belonged to him. Haringh answered: the execution will go through (NA 1186, fol. 26vo, Not. J. de Vos).

BuyerWigger Jansz. smith
Buyer FamilyJansz., Wigger (Smit)
Buyer NotesOn 2 May 1635, Wiggert Jansz., smith, from Hasselt, widower of Pietertje Harmens, was betrothed to Harmpje Heijndrix van Dedel, 22. Both lived on the Oostermarckt (DTB 443/333). On the same day, the honorable Wiggert Jansz. smith, widower last of Pietertgen Hermans, accompanied by Arent Arentsz., city scribe (stadtschrijver), signed a pre-nuptial contract with Hermtje Henricx, assisted by Arent Arentsz. city scribe (stadtschrijver) and Claes Geurtsz., city carpenter (NA 988, act 8, Not. J. Bosch). Arent Arentsz. stadschrijver is likely to be identical with Arent Arentsz. Klerck, the brother of Willem Arentsz. Klerck of R 24712. On 18 May 1635, Wichert Jansz., smith, appeared before the Orphan Chamber and declared that his children with his late wife Pietertje Harmens were entitled to 2,000 f. for their mother's inheritance (WK 5073/789). On 6 September 1635, Wiggert Jansz. smid and Hermpjen Hendrix had a child baptized in the O.K. (DTB 7/56). On 15 February 1636, Wigger Jansz. Smit, 43, and Barentge Willems who had served Egbert Jansz., spices merchant, declared at the request of Anthony de Langhe, wine dealer, that, at the time of Anthony de Langhe's bankruptcy (faillissement), they had gone, together with De Langhe, to the house of Egbert Jansz. regarding payment for wine which De Langhe had delivered to him (NA 597, fol. 254, Not. Lamberti). Wiggert Jansz., living on the O.Z. Burchwal, paid a tax of 60 f. in 1631 (Kohier, fol. 107 vo., p. 26).

Buyer FamilyBosyn (Bosijn), Abraham
Buyer NotesOn 16 February 1629, Abraham Bosijn, from Amsterdam, 27, retail merchant (winckelier), assisted by his mother Sara Keijser, living on the O.Z. Ouwebrugsteech, was betrothed to Hester Lowijs Kleuteringh, assisted by her mother Maijke Kleuteringh, 21, living on the Keysersgracht (DTB 671/125). On 11 December 1635, Abraham Bosijn and the eerbare Hester Cleuteringh passed their testament. They left 10,000 f. to his sister and, by devolution, to his sister's children (NA 477, film 6478, fol. 467, Not. Palm Matthijs). Hester Lowijs Kleuteringh was probably the daughter of the warehouse man Louis Cleutering, cited in the NOTES to R 28161 and R 29463. Abraham Bosijn, who was buried on 14 April 1671, coming from the Nieuwen Dijck, was probably our buyer (DTB 1056/46). On Louis Cleuteringh, see also R 29463.
