BuyerPieter Wybrantsz. in de Nyptang
Buyer FamilyWybrantsz., Pieter
Buyer NotesThere were at least two houses called de Nyptang. One was located op het Water on the N.Z. (see the TEXT to INVNO 453 in Montias1). The other was located on the Keizersgracht between the Harten and Wolvenstraeten (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 992). Unfortunately, the address cannot be used as the key to a secure identification. The buyer is likely to be Pieter Wybrantsz., son of Hans Pieters Wybrants de oude. He was baptized in Antwerp on 25 April 1591. He lived at least part of his life in Amsterdam outside the Kortsjepoort bij het Meerblad on the Singel (1605). He also lived in Hamburg. He may have been the grain merchant of that name who was given a procuration by Adriaen Cornelisz. Pauw, flax dealer, on 8 August 1635 (NA 372, fol. 94, Not. W. Cluyt). He married Magdalena van Haesdonck in Hamburg at an unknown date and Cornelia van Wesenbeeck in Amsterdam on 2 April 1642. On 20 December 1636, he was living in Hamburg when he was named by his two brothers Johannes and Francois Wybrants, both merchants, to collect money in Hamburg from the estate of Clara Crijpels, the wife of Pieter de Haes, their late aunt (NA 751, film 5178, Not. Perssen). Francois Wybrants seems to be identical with the individual of that name of INVNO 1205. However, his brother Johannes Wybrants cannot be the owner of the goods in INVNO 1361 who was born about 1639. Pieter Wybrants died between 30 October 1655 and 15 July 1661 (Jaarboek C.B.G. 96(1992), p. 87). The buyer may be Pieter Wybrantsz. (Kan), a sworn broker who was 56 years old according to a deposition of 21 October 1638 (NA 696A, film 4982, Not. J. Warnaerts). The (weak) argument for this identification is that Pieter Wybrants Kan requested a deposition only ten days later from the same notary (ibid.) Finally, mention should be made of Pieter Pieter Wybrantszsz. who was 34 years old on on 9 August 1614. He was said to be from Antwerp, living in the Breestraet, no living parents. He was betrothed to Elisabeth Rendorps, 38, living as above, assisted by her mother Catharina Mayers (DTB 667/143). On 14 May 1631, Pieter Wybrands (which ?) gave his guarantee, along with Hendrick Laerman, when the painter Pieter Lastman bought a house on the Breestraet (Dozy in Obreen. Archief voor de Nederlandsche kunstgeschiedenis vol. 6, p. 44 and Oud Holland 4(1886), p. 14 where the name of the surety Laerman has been corrected). In 1631, an individual named Pieter Wybrants, living in the Calverstraet, beneath the Spui, paid a tax of 10 f. (Kohier, fol. 257vo, p. 59.) Finally, on 14 August 1640, an otherwise unidentified Pieter Wybrants, comenyhouder (a sort of retail merchant), presented his three children --Maritgen, 19, Annitgen, 17, and Wybrant, 12-- whose late mother was Tryn Claes, to the Orphan Chamber and declared that the children were entitled to 1,200 f. for their mother's inheritance (WK 5073/789). None of this information identifies the buyer of this lot securely.
