BuyerGhysbert Hoppesack
Buyer FamilyHoppesack, Ghysbert (Michielsz.)
Buyer NotesThe buyer, a cloth merchant, was the son of Michiel Hoppesack, the owner of the goods sold. On 6 May 1620, Ghysbert Michelsz. Hoppesack, 23 years old, assisted by his mother Elisabeth Veen, living in the Warmoesstraet, was betrothed to Ermtje Jacobs, 19, assisted by her mother Wybrich Jansdr., living on the Nieuw Dijck (DTB 424/225). He was the son of the late Michiel Gysbertsz. Hoppesack (of R 21592) and of Lysbet Jans Veen (or Vene) (of the present inventory). She was the daughter of Jacob Andriessen, the first husband of her mother Wybrich Jans. Wybrich Jans, living on the Nieuwendijck, paid a tax of 125 f. in 1631 (Kohier, fol. 40v, p. 10). The daughter of Ghysbert Hoppesack and of Ermtje Jacobs, named Elisabeth, born in 1626, married the silk spinner (zydereeder) Abraham Wijmer (1617-1678) in 1651 (Elias, Vroedschap, pp. 463-4). In a deposition dated 11 December 1631, in which he was said to be 34 years old, Ghysbert Hoppesack and some other prominent cloth dealers declared that there was a prohibition to import English cloth into Holland (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P.78(1933), p. 463). In 1631, Gijsbert Michielsz. Hobbekick (sic) paid a tax of 30 f.; the heirs of Hobbesack, apparently living in the same house near the corner of the Papenbruchsteech, paid 95 f. (Kohier, fol. 141, p. 33). Gysbert Hoppesack was buried in the N.K. on 28 October 1664 (DTB 1055/156).

BuyerJan Barentsz. op de Nieuwendijck naest het Wapen van Munster
Buyer FamilyBarentsz., Jan
Buyer NotesThe buyer is probably the individual of that name who was said to be a lakenbereider (cloth finisher) in an act of 5 September 1630. By this act Jan Barentsz. declared that he owed a considerable sum of money to the cloth dealer Marten Codde and that he was transferring to him all his cloth-finishing equipment (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P. 78(1933), p. 728). The fact that the late Ghysbert Hoppesack was a cloth dealer adds to this presumption (since buyers at auction often were of the same trade as the sellers). Jan Barentsz., living on the Nieuwen Dijck, paid a tax of 40 f. in 1631 (Kohier, fol. 39 vo., p. 10). The address on the Nieuwen Dijck confirms the identification. Jan Barentsz. was the brother of Claes Barentsz. of R 7625 and the uncle of the children left by Goswyn van der Hal.

BuyerWybrich Jans
Buyer FamilyJans, Wybrich
Buyer NotesWybrich Jans, living on the West side of the Nieuwendijck, paid a tax of 150 f. in 1631 (Kohier, fol. 40vo, p. 10). In R 19480, Wybrich Jans was said to be the swager of Wybrich Jans Smit (of R 20504). Indeed, both lived on the West side of the Nieuwendijck. Willem Smit was actually her son-in-law, the husband of her daughter Lysbeth Jacobs, from her first marriage to Jacob Andriessen. Wybrich Jans was also the mother-in-law of Ghysbert Michielsz. Hoppesack (of R 32342) who was married to her daughter Ermtgen Jacobs, of Lucas Abrahamsen Capelle, married to her daughter Grietge Jacobs, and of Jan Barents Coop, married to her daughter Annitge Jacobs. Her son by her first marriage was named Andries Jacobsz. At the time of her death, in 1639, she was married to Anthony Lodewycx. For her death inventory, see INVNO 1235. For these family relations, see the TEXT to R 1156 of Montias1.

BuyerDaniel Vorsten
Buyer FamilyVorsten, Daniel
Buyer NotesOn 27 March 1618, Daniel Vorsten, 24 years old, assisted by his father Hans Vorsten, living in the Warmoesstraet, was betrothed to Cornelia Michiels, 18, assisted by her mother Lysbeth Veenen, living as above (DTB 422/202). The bride-to-be was the daughter of Michiel Gysbrechtsz. Hoppesack (of R 21592) and of Lysbeth Jans Veen (or Vene) (of the present inventory). Bredero wrote a poem on the occasion of their marriage (I. van Eeghen in Maandblad Amstelodamum 55(1968), p. 164). On 27 December 1618, the couple had their daughter Janneke baptized in the O.K. in the presence of Janneke Vosch and Gijsbrecht Michielsz. Hoppesack (DTB 5/269). Daniel Vorsten was the father of Cornelia Vorstens, who was betrothed to Nicolaes Visscher, the son of the print-maker Claes Jansz. Visscher (of R 22512), on 14 August 1643. Daniel Vorsten and Cornelia Hoppesack lived at that time on the Bloemsgracht (Oud Holland, 4(1886), p. 222.) In 1628, the children of Michel Gysbrechtsz. Hoppesack sold to Gysbert Michelsz. Hoppesack a house and work-place on the West side of Kaempadt for 1,612 f. Daniel Vorsten and Adriaen Veen the jonge were sureties for the purchaser (WK 5073/913). In 1631, Daniel Vorsten, living on the corner of Papenbruchsteech, near the Zeedijck, paid a tax of 30 f. He seems to have been living next door to Gysbert Michielsz. Hoppekick and to the heirs of Hobbesack and to have been a close neighbor of Pieter Vorsten, cloth finisher, who was perhaps his brother. He may also have been a lakenbereider (Kohier, fol. 141, p. 33). He was said to be a merchant on 13 September 1628 when he appeared before the Orphan Chamber as guardian over Cornelia Michiels (Hoppesack) in connection with the estate left by her mother Lysbeth van Venen (WK 5073/890). On 20 August 1647, Daniel, son of Claes Visscher and Cornelia Vorstens, was baptized in the O.K. in the presence of Claes Jansz. Visscher, Daniel Vorstens, and Aefjen Visschers (Oud Holland, ibid.)

BuyerAdriaen Veen
Buyer FamilyVeen, Adriaen
Buyer NotesOn 15 November 1602, Adriaan Veen, 30 years old, living near the Korsgens Poort, assisted by his father Jan Veen and his mother Margriet Verhaer, was betrothed to Maritgen Bochoudts, 20, living on the O.Z. Achterburchwal, assisted by Tietje Cornelis Codden, her mother, and Pieter Vlaminck, her neve (DTB 410/224). Adriaen's sister Lysbet Jans Veen, was 23 years old when she was betrothed to Michiel Gijsbertsz. Hoppesack, also 23, on 7 September 1596 (DTB 408/69). On Michiel Gijsbertsz., see R 21592. On 4 October 1619, Adriaen Veen shared, along with Lysbeth Venen, the widow of Michiel Hoppesack and her 7 children, Jasper Cornelisz. Pot, and Adriaen Valckenier (married to Wyntgen Venen) in the estate, valued at 50,192 f., of the wealthy Lenaert Lenertsz. (I) (WK 5073/889). Lenaert Lenertsz. I was apparently the father of Hans Lenaertsz., the inventories of whose widow are recorded in INVNO 568 and INVNO 5680, and the grandfather of Lendert Leendertsz. (II) of R 33789. Adriaen Veen was a schutter in the corporaalschap of Captain Simon Willemsz. Nooms (bore 1616) (Oud Holland 15(1897), p. 134). On 16 January 1620, Adriaen Veen, widower of Maria Boekout (Bochhoudts), was betrothed to Catherina van Trier (DTB 424/122). On or about 24 August 1624, Cornelis Lodewijcksz., bookbinder (legatuerwercker), of R 28224, insinuated Adriaen Veen, beer distributor (bierbeschooijer) (NA 389, fol. 59). In 1631, Adriaen Veen, living on the Oude Schans, paid a tax of 80 f. (Kohier, fol. 125, p. 30). Adriaen Veen was buried in the N.K. on 3 September 1632 (DTB 1054/69). In 1632, he was a regent of the Aalmoezeniersweeshuis (Wagenaar, Amsterdam, vol. 2, p. 300). It is doubtful whether he is identical with the cartographer Adriaen Veen, born in Gouda, who was an innovator in seafaring science and cartography. On 12 September 1594, he received a patent (octrooi) for 12 years for making gebulte karten (C. Romburgh et al., Beredeneerd Register op de Werken der Linschoten-Vereeniging, 1957, p. 746.)
