Buyer FamilyEvertsz., Jacob (Worst)
Buyer NotesThe buyer called himself Jacob Evertsz. Worst when he assisted Andries Overhagen on the occasion of his betrothal to Anna Marines on 25 April 1624 (R 36297). This identification is supported by the fact that he bought from the estate of Anthony Marinijsz., who was probably related to Anna Marines, and that the goods in the present inventory were sold at the request of Andries Overhagen. He was probably the son of Evert Jacobsz. Worst, living in Kampen, whose widow, named Weyntge van Walbeeck, married Pieter Jacobsz. van Rijn (of R 27935) on 27 June 1637. Weyntge was the daughter of Jacob van Walbeeck and Weyntge van Foreest (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 270). The widow of Jacob Evertsz., who may be the same individual, was taxed 40 f. in 1631, at which time she was living on the Bierkay (Kohier, fol. 169 vo., p. 39.) It is likely to be the same Jacob Evertsz., silk cloth dealer, who bought half of the house Walcheren in Zeelant from the heirs of Hans van Hanswijck (see INVNO 781). Anthony van Davelaer (of INVNO 1030) sold the other half of the house to Hans Pieter Wijbrants and sold it to Hans Pieter of R 38078) on 19 June 1617 (Kam, Waar was dat huis in de Warmoesstraat? 1968 37/22, p. 432). An individual named Jacob Evertsz., furworker (bontwercker), living on the Oude Kerck steegh, bought books at the sale of Arnoldus Magistri Glazerij on 18 March 1625 (WK 5073/957). Jacob Evertsz. (probably identical with our buyer) was the brother of Judit Everts, married to Pieter Hendricksz. van Bijlveldt, a major investor in the drying of the Zijpe. He too invested in his brother-in-law's projects (Maandblad Amstelodamum 74(1987), p. 80).

BuyerInde swarten hondt
Buyer FamilyInde Swarten Hondt
Buyer NotesIn de Swarten Hondt was a house situated in the Nes. It was bought by Jochem Hendricksz. Swartenhondt on 7 April 1606 (GA, WK 674/175). Swartenhondt (1566-1627) was vice-admiral under the Admiralty of Amsterdam in 1621 (Elias, Vroedschap, pp. 189, 254). Portraits of Maerten Rey and of his wife, Maria Joachima, the daughter of Jochem Henrdricks. Swartenhondt, by Nicolaes Elias, are known. Warner van Valckert portrayed Swartenhondt in a painting at present in the Rijksmuseum (Oud Holland 4(1885), p. 87). For a portrait of Jochem Hendricksz. Swartenhont, by B. van der Helst, dated 1625, see Blankert, Amsterdams Historisch Museum, p. 116. He was married to Elisabeth Jacobs Bas (1571-1649), whose famous portrait as a widow, formerly attributed to Rembrandt, is now given to Ferdinand Bol (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 254.) He may be the buyer of this lot.

BuyerAbraham de Decker van den vrunden
Buyer FamilyDecker, Abraham de
Buyer NotesThe buyer is likely to be the spice merchant (cruijdenier) of that name (not the painter Abraham Decker of R 20970 whose name is normally written without de). Abraham de Decker, born in Antwerp, was the son of Hans de Decker and Sara Deyns. On 9 March 1607, Abraham de Decker, spices merchant, 25 and living in Dordrecht, assisted by his mother Sara Deyns, was betrothed to Maaike van den Bremden, from Antwerp, 24, assisted by her brothers-in-law Hans Haelbos and Antoine Carelsz. (DTB 412/190). Hans (or Jan), Haelbos, hofmeester, had married Geertruit van den Bremden, the sister of Maaike van den Bremden, in 1601. Sara Deyns was the sister of Maycke Deyns, the wife of Hans de Decker. On 10 March 1607, the pre-nuptial contract was signed. Abraham de Decker was assisted by his father Hans de Decker and his mother Sara Deus (Bredius, Künstler-inventare p. 49 of the Nachträge). On 26 October 1617, Abraham de Decker and Maijke van den Bremde had a child baptized in the O.K. in the presence of Cornelis Jansz. Honig and of Cornelia de Decker (DTB 5/230). On 11 November 1627, Jacques Verspreet (cited in the NOTES to R 25596) and Abraham de Decker, as co-guardians of Hans, 17, the son left by Jan Haelbos, hofmeester, whose mother was Truytgen van den Bremde, brought 2,216 f. to the Orphan Chamber for the boy's inheritance (WK 5073/789). On 9 April 1636, Jacques Verspreet and Abraham de Decker brought Hans, the son left by Hans Haelbosch, who had died in Pernambuco, 1527 f. (WK 5073/789). Abraham de Decker became a sworn broker. On 13 October 1636, he had a sworn deposition taken from Hans aux Brebis II (of R 25592) and of Anthony van der Heeden (of INVNO 255) (NA 695A, film 4981). On 4 October 1638, Abraham de Decker, 56, and Salomon de Vogel (of R 7613), 44, sworn brokers, made a declaration concerning the price of Venetian anise at the request of the merchant Cornelis Gysbrechtsz. van Goor (NA 696A, film 4982). On 25 October 1657, Sr. Johannes de Decker, accompanied by Abraham de Decker de oude, his granduncle (presumably our buyer), and Abraham de Decker de jonge, his cousin, signed a pre-nuptial agreement with Margaretha van Belcamp (Bredius, Künstler-inventare, p. 1356). On the family relations between Abraham de Decker, Anthony Marinisz. and Andries Overhagen, see the TEXT of R 731. Abraham de Decker, who was himself an homme de lettres, was the father of the poet Jeremias de Decker, born in 1609, whose portrait Rembrandt painted in 1666.

Buyer FamilyClocker, Jan
Buyer NotesOn 22 February 1619, Jan Klocker, from Aken, 24 years old, no living parents, assisted by his brother Jacob Klokker, living in the Warmoesstraet, was betrothed to Marie Drumez, 23, assisted by Juffr. Barb Dragon, her mother, living on the Houtmarckt (DTB 423/161). On 22 April 1621, Jan Clocker and Marij Druimes had their son Carel baptized in the O.K. in the presence of Pieter Pelser and Sara Druimes (DTB 5/351). Sara Druimes (or Drumez), who was married to Abraham Soolmans of R 27420, was the sister of Maria Drumez. Jan Clockert, living on the West side of the Keysersgracht, paid a tax of 5 f. in 1631 (Kohier, fol. 96, p. 23). On 10 June 1633, Jan Clocker, merchant, 36, made a deposition at the request of Philips Pelt (of R 28903) regarding Swedish copper money (NA 694B, film 4980. Not. J. Warnaerts). In 1643, he joined a number of other merchants in calling for stabilization of the currency (Van Dillen, Wisselbanken, R.G.P., 59(1925), p. 85).
