BuyerJan Jansz. tot Gerrit Arentsz. achter [Jan Dircksz.]
Buyer FamilyJansz., Jan (sculptor ?)
Buyer NotesJan Jansz. was probably an apprentice working for the sculptor Gerrit Arentsz. of R 36221. He is likely to be identical with Jan Jansz. steenhower who died before 27 January 1636 when his widow Martgen Egberts, assisted by Pieter Claesz., her chosen guardian, appeared before the Orphan Chamber and declared that her 4 children were entitled to 2,200 f. for their father's inheritance (WK 5073/789). On 20 January 1639, Claes Arentse, from Haarlem, beelthouwer, 30, living on the Coninggradt, assisted by his mother Nelle Cornelis, was betrothed to Marritie Egberts, from Amsterdam, widow of Jan Jans, living on the Leitse veer (in de Pui) (Obreen, Archief voor de Nederlandsche kunstgeschiedenis 5(1882-1883), p. 19). Note that Carel Cree also lived on the Leitse veer. The buyer is unlikely to be identical with Jan Hansz. of R 23836 who was married to Hillegont Jans.

BuyerGerrit Arentsz.
Buyer FamilyArentsz., Gerrit
Buyer NotesThe buyer was a sculptor. On 11 November 1600, Gerrit Arentsz., from Bentheim, sculptor, 25 years old, having lived 5 years on the O.Z. Voorburgwal, no parents (habes patri d'Blasthemij), was betrothed to Geesje Heinrics ter Horst, also from Bentheim, 28, assisted by her father Heinrick ter Horst. Both were illiterate (DTB 409/268). On 28 September 1612, Gerrit Arentsz., steenhower, and Geesjen Heinrix, had their son baptized in the O.K. in the presence of Claesjen Willems (DTB 5/31). Gerrit Arentsz. made a declaration in 1616 at the request of a mason named Jan Pietersz. Metselaer concerning a hearth he was making on the Varckemarct. He complained that the carpenter Cornelis Cornelisz. Bijl was so indolent the work got delayed to the detriment of his work and of the owner of the house (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P. 78(1933), p. 157). On 5 December 1618, Meynert Jansz., master of the tax on coarse or bulk wares (grove ware) summoned Gerrit Arentsz., along with many other stone dealers and stone carvers regarding their stock (NA 381, fol. 542 and foll.)
