BuyerJan van Heusden
Buyer FamilyHeusden (Heussen), Jan (Johannes) van (I?)
Buyer NotesOn 11 February 1611, Jan van Heussen, from Saerdam, 28 years old, a puero living on the Zeedijck, assisted by Nelletgen van Heussen, his sister, and Gysbrecht Jacobsz. de Goijer, his swager, was betrothed to Isabeau Coijmans, 22, living on the O.Z. Voorburgwal, assisted by her parents Kasper Koijmans (of R 31693) and Isabel van Lemens (DTB 413/380). Nelletgen van Heusden, after the death of Gysbrecht de Goijer, married Jan Jansz. van Hoorn (de jonge, of R 32159). She died about 1648 (for her death inventory, see INVNO 396). Kasper (or Casper) Koijmans (or Coeymans) was also the father of Susanna Coijmans, the wife of Lucas van Valckenburch of R 31704, of Cornelia Coymans, who married Abraham de Visscher of R 37010, and of Clara Coymans, who married Pieter de Latfeur of R 20047. On 22 January 1623, Jan van Heusden and Isabella Koijmans had their son Heinrick baptized in the O.K. in the presence of Jan van Hooren de jonge (the son of the fabryckmeester of R 27381) and Lucretia Coijmans (DTB 6/38). Lucretia Coijmans, another sister of Isabeau Coijmans, married Pieter Cruypenning, who was buried on 17 April 1639 (DTB 1000A/33). It was at his widow's request that an important collection of paintings was found in the ceiling of the house of Lambert Massa, which included a priest by Rembrandt. This collection was inventorized on 25 April 1640. The collection was said to belong to the art dealer Johannes de Renialme of R 8201 (NA 422, film 6438, INVNO 1040). The widow of Jan Heusden paid a tax of 150 f. in 1631, at which time she lived on the N.Z. Voorburchwal (Kohier, fol. 239 vo., p. 55). Jan van Heusden I is probably identical with Jan van Heussen, merchant, who had some cloth dyed in 1618 (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P. 78(1933), p. 348.) Johannes van Heusden II was the son of Johannes van Heusden I and of Isabeau Coymans. On 11 December 1638, Johannes van Heusden, 25, assisted by his mother Isabeau Coymans, was betrothed to Magdalena le Fevre, from The Hague, 21, assisted by her father Abraham le Fevre, living on the Keysersgracht (DTB 449/573). Johannes van Heusden (II), He was a dealer in silk. His post-mortem inventory, drawn up at the request of Jean de Bary, was dated 26 February 1640 (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P. 144(1974), pp. 255-6). Juffr. Magdalena le Febvre was said to be the widow of Joannes van Heusden II on 2 April 1640 (NA 421, film 643). Jean de Bary was a merchant's employee (coopgesel) in 1622. According to a document dated 11 June 1622, he had been apprenticed to learn the drapier's trade and had lived with Jan van Gansepoel (of INVNO 616) for two years, together with Carel de la Vie (Van Dillen, op.cit. 78(1933), p. 453). Note that LOT 0004 has been skipped.

BuyerJan Helling
Buyer FamilyHelling (Hellincx), Jan
Buyer NotesThe buyer is likely to be identical with the merchant Jan Hellincx, born in Maastricht in 1568. Jan Hellincx became a citizen of Amsterdam in 1592. He invested 13,000 f. in the first subscription and 17,050 f. in the second subscription for V.O.C. shares (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, pp. 61 and 259). He was 41 years old when he was betrothed to Gertruyd Hudden Henrixdr., the daughter of his business partner Hendrick Hudde, on 6 February 1609. He was then living on the Singel. She was assisted by her mother Gertruyd van Marckel and her godmother Belitgen Hudde. She was said to be 22 years of age, living on the Baerndstraet (DTB 413/374). Belitge Hudde was the daughter of Arent Hudde and the sister of Hendrick Hudde (of R 26928), the business partner of Jan Hellincx. On 14 November 1610, Jan Hellincx and Gertruyd Hudde had their daughter Elisabeth baptized in the N.K. in the presence of Geertruy van Marken (the grandmother) (DTB 39/235). Elisabeth Hellincx was invited, together with Hendrick Hudde and his wife, to the wedding of Bernard de Moor and Clara van Capelle on 22 January 1630 (Nederlandse Leeuw 44(1926), p. 10). On 27 April 1635, Joannes Looten, as having married Elisabeth Hellings, declared that Hendrick and Gerrit Hudde (of R 26928 and R 7698 resp.) and Isaack Moors (of R 26927) were guardians of his wife (NA 598, fol. 1). In 1614, Jan Hellings was a regent of the O.Z. Huiszittenhuis (Wagenaar, Amsterdam, vol. 2, p. 266). According to Van Dillen (Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, p. 223), He freighted 4 ships between 1617 and 1624 (Winkelman, Bronnen voor de geschiedenis van de Nederlandse Oostzeehandel R.G.P. 186(1983), p. 777.) He died on 22 September 1624. For the post-mortem inventory of Elisabeth Hellincx, dated 29 January 1636, see INVNO 1133. Another Jan Hellincx, perhaps his son, became a poorter of Amsterdam on 7 July 1650 (Gelderblom, Prosopographic Data Base).

Buyertot wiens versoeck (Marten Hendricksz. Spiegel ?)
Buyer FamilySpiegel, Marten Hendricksz.
Buyer NotesThe lot was probably held at the disposal of Marten Hendricksz. Spiegel at whose request the sale was organized. Marten Spiegel was a merchant, probably dealing in woolen cloth (see the text to R 778 of Montias1). On 1 September 1612, Marten Hendricksz. Spiegel, 24 years old, living op 't Water, assisted by his cousin Laurens Jansz. Spiegel, was betrothed to Nelletie Jan Korvers, 25, assisted by her father Jan Korver and her mother Nelletgen Bassen (DTB 416/256). Laurens Jansz. Spiegel of R 21206 was the son of Jan Laurensz. Spiegel, the brother of Hendrick Laurensz. Spiegel (of R 28017), the father of Marten Hendricksz. Spiegel. On 14 October 1614, Marten Hendricksz. Spiegel acknowledged before the aldermen, the burgomasters, and the treasurers of Amsterdam that he had rented a lot to build een vulmolen (a mill to make felt as well perhaps as chamois leather) in the Passeerders Bolwerck outside the Jan Roodenpoort (Jaarboek Amstelodamum 55(1963), p. 89). On 9 November 1616, he issued an aldermen's obligation yielding 24 f. a year to cover the rental of ground for the vulmolen (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P. 78(1933), p.188). On 7 April 1618, Marten Spiegel and Nelletje Corvers had their son Jan baptized in the N.K. in the presence of Jacobus Jansz. Spiegel (DTB 40/5). On 15 March 1622, Marten Hendricksz. Spiegel appeared before the Orphan Chamber and declared that his two children with the late Nelletge Corvers (Grietgen, 7, and Nelletge, 1) were entitled to 6000 f. for their mother's inheritance (WK 5073/513, fol. 247vo.) On 1 May 1636, Claes Corver (of R 8317) and Goris de Waert (of R 7605) declared before the Orphan Chamber that the children left by Nelletje Corver, Margariet, 21, Nelletien, 15, whose father is Marten Spiegel, were entitled to 3,000 f. out of the inheritance of their uncle Jan Jansz. Corver de jonge (WK 5073/789). Marten Spiegel was buried in the N.K. on 26 July 1641 (DTB 1054/139vo). On 13 January 1643, the heirs of Marten Hendricx Spiegel offered for sale a one third share in the house formerly called St. Andries and now de Meerman in the Warmoesstraat. Another third was bought by Daniel Kick in the name of Allert Bartringh for 7,118 f. The sureties were Jan Leemans and Jan Bartringh (Kam, Waar was dat huis in de Warmoesstraat?, 1968 37/15). Jan Leemans may be identical with the individual of that name, serving in the company of Jan Willemsz. Bogaert who signed a petition at the end of November 1628 protesting the excessive influence of Remonstrants in the militia (Wagenaar, vol. 1, p. 501). Jan Bartringh or Bartrinck was one of the directors of the W.I.C. in the 1630s. Daniel Kick, merchant, was insinuated on 21 May 1640, by a silk dyer regarding some silk material that he, Kick, was supposed to have worked up. Kick had accused the dyer of thievery, which the dyer vigorously denied. In his answer to the insinuation, Kick averred that he did not know whether the loss (in weight), about which he, Kick, had originally complained, had been due to the poor work of his own knechts or had occurred in the process of dyeing (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven 144(1974), pp.271-2).

BuyerLucas van Valckenburgh
Buyer FamilyValckenburgh, Lucas van
Buyer NotesLucas van Valckenburgh, born in Antwerp in 1584, was the son of Jan van Valckenburg (of R 31706) and of Elisabeth Michiels Varlaer. On 31 January 1610, the brothers Marcus (born in 1587) and Lucas van Valkenburg were baptized as adults (op haer bekentnisse) in Sloterdijck. They were probably Mennonites. On 4 July 1619, Lucas van Valckenburch, 34 years old, assisted by his mother Elisabeth Michiels, was betrothed to Susanna Coeymans, 21, assisted by her father Caspar Coeymans (of R 31693), living on the O.Z. Voorburchwal (DTB 423/321). Lucas had the following brothers and sisters: Anna, married to Aernout Cobbaut de jonge of R 21250; Margaretha, married to Marcus de Vogelaer of R 23422; Elisabeth, married to the pensioner and poet Jacob Cats; Maria, married to Willem van Wely of R 21266; Susanna, married to the attorney Fabian van Vliet; Marcus, already cited, who lived in England and was buried in Hatfield on 27 October 1653; and his partner in business Matheus, born in 1588, at first merchant in Amsterdam, then in London, married to Isabelle Eyre, died in Hatfield on 4 April 1644. The exact year of Lucas's death is not known, but he must have died between 1647 and 1653 (Nederlandsche Leeuw 6(1944), col. 51 and foll.)
