Buyersolvit [crossed out: Balestel]
Buyer FamilyBalestel (Nicolaes, de jonge)
Buyer NotesThe buyer is probably Nicolaes Balestel de jonge, born in Atrecht in 1577, who was betrothed to Christina Wolphaerts van Diemen, from Antwerp, on 31 October 1608. He was then 31 years old and living on the O.Z. Voorburgwal. He was assisted by his father Nicolas Balestel (de oude). She was 25 and was assisted by her parents Gerard Wolphaertsz. and Anna Gabri (DTB 413/311). Nicolas Balestel de oude, who was married to Isabelle (or Isabeau) Payen, died in 1627. A portrait of the buyer exists (in the De Moor album, see Nederlandsche Leeuw 45(1927), p. 65). Gerard Wolphersen was the fourth largest investor of North Netherlandish origin in the first subscription for V.O.C. shares (24,000 f.) Christina was the sister of Sara Wolphaerts van Diemen, the wife of Nicolaes Hasselaer (probably the buyer of R 20054). Nicolaes Balestel de jonge died in 1650 (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, p. 120.) Not long before his death, he assisted his niece Anna Burgh, the daughter of burgomaster Coenradt Burgh, in her pre-nuptial contract with Theodorus Tulp, the son of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp (NA 988, fol. 58, Not. Bosch). The portraits of Nicolas Balestel de oude and of his father Antoine Balestel are preserved in the Amsterdams Historisch Museum (Blankert, Amsterdams Historisch Museum, p. 382). Nicolaes Balestel de jonge was an important merchant. His sister Jenne Balestel was betrothed to the merchant Jean Gilles on 9 December 1614 (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, p. 227.) Jean Gilles, son of Brise Gilles, born in Antwerp in 1584, was present at the baptism of Samuel, the son of Samuel Chavatte and his daughter Maria on 25 November 1620 (see R 26634). It was presumably Nicolaes Balestel de oude who, with Hendrick Lensen, freighted a ship to Koenigsberg on 23 August 1606 (Winkelman, Bronnen voor de geschiedenis van de Nederlandse Oostzeehandel, R.G.P., 184(1983), p. 305). Niclaes Balestel (de jonge) signed the Remonstrant petition of 1628, as did Hendrick Lensen. In 1631, Isack Bevelot paid a tax of 66 f. 13 st. for the inheritance of Nicolaes Balestel de oude (Kohier, fol. 10, p. 4). On 13 June 1635, Nicolaes Balestel (II) was said to be a regent of the pesthuis (together with Dirck Wuytiers of R 7663, Jacob Servaes, and Dirck Hasselaer), at which time Mr. Louis was pestmeester (NA 991, fol. 54, Not. J. Bosch).

BuyerLaurens Vernier Keysersgracht
Buyer FamilyVernier, Laurens
Buyer NotesIt was perhaps the father of the buyer, also called Laurens Vernier, married to Griet Joosten, who made a codicil to his testament on 28 June 1591 (Extracten). He sold the house De Orange Boom on the Warmoesstraet to Gerrit Ryckelsma, silk cloth dealer, in 1595 (Kam, Waar was dat huis in de Warmoesstraat?, 1968, 36/18). This Laurens Vernier was buried in the O.K. on 27 December 1600. He had been living on the O.Z. Voorburchwal near the Varckensluys (DTB 1042/260). Nothing is known about Laurens Vernier II living on the Keizersgracht.

BuyerJohan Bultel totte schouts
Buyer FamilyBultel, Johan (Hans)
Buyer NotesJohan or Hans Bultel was a merchant originally from Antwerp, who is first noted in Amsterdam in 1610 (Gelderblom, Zuid-Nederlandse kooplieden, p. 296). He was born about 1672 according to the deposition of 27 February 1637 cited below. He did business in company with the Schout Simon Willemsz. van der Does (whence totte schouts). He was the nephew of Antoine l'Empereur, the father of Constantijn l'Empereur who married Catherina Thijs, the daughter of Hans Thijsz. de oude of INVNO 690 and the sister of Hans Thijsz. de jonge of R 27698 (Thys archief, Library of the University of Leiden, Catalogue). On 31 March 1632, Hans Bultel, from Antwerp, widower of Torikje Frans, living in the Wolfstraet, was betrothed to Susanna Majeur, 40, assisted by her sister Marija Majeur (DTB 439/3). Maria Bultel, born in Antwerp, who married the Schout Van der Does on 13 October 1605, may have been Hans Bultel's sister (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 324.) On 27 February 1637, Johannes Bultel (signs Hans), 65, declared at the request of the heirs of Jan Olij (Jansz.?, cited in the NOTES to R 38541), that he lived in his house in the Warmoesstraet in 1628, at which time he paid a rent of 270 f. per year (NA 991, fol.102, Not. J. Bosch). On 10 April 1637, Johan Bultel affirmed that he was renting the house De Winthont in the St. Anthonispoort, which had formerly belonged to Claes Henricx, dyer (of R 7667), for 310 f. a year (NA 991, fol. 127, Not. J. Bosch). On 12 November 1637, the eersame Jan Bultel, merchant, 5(?), and Adriaen Braems, 36, of R 25313, declared at the request of Franck and Simon van der Does that, at the time of the 200th penning assessment of 1635, Symon van der Does Jacobsz. had more debts than assets and that it was impossible for him to pay the 200th penning tax. He had received no more inheritance from Captain Emaus or his widow (of INVNO 1244) than 700 f. minus 200 f. that he owed to the estate (the widow was Juff. van Soutelande) (NA 696A, film 4982). Note that the following lot was bought by Simon van der Does. On 3 October 1636, Mr. Jeroen Wagelier (?), as husband and guardian of Jacquemyntje Bouchet, formerly wife of Touchyn (Toussaint) Majeur, Augustyn de Colenaer (of R 25268), husband and guardian of Maria Majeur, and Abraham Majeur, besides Susanna Majeur, all heirs of Tousyn Majeur, approved an agreement made by Hans Bultel with Basilio Boucher, the father and swager respectively of the appearers, concerning the sum of 60 rijcksdaelders that Basilio Boucher owed to the appearers. However due to war and decadentie, Basilio had only paid 32 rijcksdaelders (NA 597, fol. 537, Not. Lamberti).

BuyerMelis Steckenhuysen
Buyer NotesThe buyer is called Mellis Steenhuysen in R 36498, which is a more frequently encountered family name. It is perhaps a coincidence that the mother of Andries Steenwinckel of R 27482 was named Maeijken Melis. In any case, Melis Steckenhuysen, alias Steenhuysen, has not been identified.
