BuyerJan Witsen
Buyer FamilyWitsen, Jan (Cornelisz.)
Buyer NotesOn 19 December 1596, Jan Cornelis Witsen, 25 years old, living in the N.Z. Voorburchwal, assisted by his brother Jonas Witsen, was betrothed to Margrieta Claesdr., 17, assisted by Claes Fransz., oud burgermeester, and Jopgen Lens, her father and mother (DTB 366/73). According to Elias (Vroedschap, p. 167), Margrieta Claesdr. was the daughter of Claes Fransz. Oetgens and of his first marriage with Pietertge Laurens. Jan Witsen, who organized the sale together with his son Cornelis, was born in Amsterdam and died there on 19 October 1636. He was a grain merchant, active in trade with Moscovy. He was N.Z. Huiszittenmeester (1598) and captain of the militia in 1616. Captain Jan Witsen paid a tax of 425 f. in 1631 (living on the Appelmarckt) (Kohier, fol. 261, p. 60). On 24 May 1648, Casper van Ceulen (II) signed a pre-nuptial contract with Catarina Opmeer (II). He was assisted by his brother Jan van Ceulen (cited in the TEXT of R 831 of INVNO 929 of Montias1); she, by her grandmother Margerite Claes Oetgens, widow of Jan Witsen; by Cornelis Witsen (of INVNO 294), alderman and raad of the Vroedschap; and by Jacob van der Marckt (cited in the NOTES to R 32247) (NA 1601, fol. 27, Not. W. Hasen). Casper (Gasparo) van Ceulen (1620-1680) was a merchant, first in Amsterdam, later in Cadix. He was Consul of the States General to Cadix and Commissary Extraordinary to the Court of Spain from 1678 to 1680 (Elias, Vroedschap van Amsterdam, p.644).

BuyerAdriaen Hendricksz.
Buyer FamilyHendricksz., Adriaen (de Wees)
Buyer NotesThe buyer is likely to be Adriaen Hendricksz. de Wees (1595-1674), born in Beverwijck. At the time of his marriage to Hillegont Govers in 1615, when he was still living in Beverwijck, he was said to be a shoemaker. On 1 October 1639 and at later dates, he was recorded as a broker. He lived near the Heilige Weg Poort since 1657. On 29 September 1658, the commissaries of the Desolate Boedelskamer authorized Adriaen Hendricxen to attend the auction of Rembrandt's prints and drawings and to employ the most suitable way of sorting and distributing the objects in order to sell the property to its greatest advantage. In a document of 19 March 1659, he attested to his familiarity with Rembrandt's works and collection, and declared, along with Lodewijck van Ludick, that the paper works, rarities (naturalia), antiquities, medals and sea-animals in Rembrandt's collection were worth the sum of f. 11,000. He also possessed a collection of prints and drawings, part of which, according to Strauss et al., might have been derived from Rembrandt. He was said to be one of the first brokers in objets d'art (Strauss et al., Rembrandt Documents, pp. 425 and 444). He was living bij 't Herenlogement (where auction sales were held) on 15 January 1656 when his wife was buried. His daughter Catherina (Trijntge) Adriaens was betrothed to the plate engraver Joannes de Visscher, from Haarlem, living on the Heerestraet, on 30 May 1657. She was then living on the Heiligewegspoort. On 30 October 1658, Joannes de Visscher, married to Catharina Adriaens, daughter of Adriaen Hendricksz. de Wees, broker, became a poorter of Amsterdam (Obreen, Archief voor de Nederlandsche kunstgeschiedenis 2(1880-1880), p. 166). Toward the end of his life, De Wees rented a little house in the Oudemanshuispoort, where he died on 4 April 1674. He was buried three days later in the O.K. (Jaarboek Amstelodamum 61(1969), p. 78.) The son of Adriaen Hendricksz., named Hendrick Adriaensz. de Wees, was born on 6 December 1615 in Beverwijck. On 22 April 1640, he married Adriaentje Jans, born about 1619, in Alphen, near Leiden. His son Gerrit Hendricksz. de Wees (1641-1701) migrated to New York in the 1680s (information provided by Louisa Wood Ruby).
