BuyerA. Verbeeck
Buyer FamilyVerbeeck, Abraham
Buyer NotesThere seem to be two individuals named Abraham Verbeeck who lived in Amsterdam at approximately the same time. One, named Abraham Aertsz. Verbeeck (I), cited by Gelderblom (Zuid-Nederlandse kooplieden, p. 149), died in 1610. The other, Abraham Verbeeck II, was the brother of Jacques Verbeeck of the present inventory, who is almost surely the buyer of this lot. He was married to Francina van Solt I, the presumed sister of Hans van Solt I, when she was already a widow (see R 29281). After her death, which took place on 27 March 1612, he remarried with Sara van Clermont (De Navorscher 84(1935), p. 37). Abraham Verbeeck died on 21 July 1621. Our buyer bought this lot in 1613, three years after the death of his homonym. The eersame Abraham Verbeeck was one of the heirs of Jacques Verbeeck, according to an earlier inventory of Jacques's possessions dated 27 October 1612 (INVNO 110, R 450 of Montias1). The following information refers to Abraham Aertsz. Verbeeck. On 5 August 1589, Abraham Verbeeck, from Antwerp, 29 years old, living op 't Water, tot Claes Benning, who brought in the consent of his father Aert Verbeeck, in the hands of Hans van Uffelen and Jeronimus Petiteau, was betrothed to Anna Broens, also from Antwerp, 21 (DTB 405/180). Jeronimus Petiteau was the father of Guillam Petiteau of INVNO 929. On Hans van Uffelen, see R 30510. In the beginning of the 1590s, Abraham (Aertsz.) Verbeeck formed a company with his swager Joris Kessels in Middelburgh and his father Aert Verbeeck who was then living in Bremen. In 1595 they transferred to another merchant a large quantity of whale products , French plums (all warehoused in Arkhangelsk), and one fourth of a ship's cargo filled with beans, hemp, lead, and caviar stored in Livorno and Venice. In 1596, Verbeeck set up a company with some English merchants to trade in Moscovy. A few years later he teamed up with Marten Soolmans (the father of Isaack Soolmans of R 27398) to exploit a mill for making gun powder. He delivered to the V.O.C. and the Admiralty thousands of gulden worth of gunpowder and saltpeter. In 1609, he called himself gunpowder-maker (Gelderblom, loc. cit.) There was a third Abraham Verbeeck who, with his presumed brother Joost Verbeeck was cited in an insinuation dated 10 November 1624 (see R 29979).

BuyerJan van Geel
Provenanceperhaps the painting of this subject in the probate inventory of Jacques Verbeeck (R 18216 of INVNO 544).
Buyer FamilyGeel, Jan (Hans) van (II)
Buyer NotesThere were at least three generations of merchants named Hans van Geel. Hans van Geel I, married to Maria Coymans, had his goods sold at WK auction after his death, on 15 February 1601 (INVNO 785). Their son Hans (Jan or Jean) van Geel II is probably the buyer of this lot. He was born in 1589 and he was a merchant in Italy and the Levant under the firm of Daniel and Jean van Gheel. On 20 June 1618, Jean van Gheel and Daniel van Gheel, brothers, drew up their joint testament (Jaarboek Amstelodamum 69(1977)). He married Elisabeth Lampsins, born in Middelburg in 1602, on 5 September 1623. He became Heer van Spanbroeck, Spierdijck en Zuydermeer. Elisabeth Lampsins was buried in the W.K. on 14 July 1667 (Elias, Vroedschap, pp. 975-6). On 16 April 1618, Jean van Geel and Elisabeth Lampsins had their son Daniel (II) baptized in the N.K. (DTB 40/447). Daniel II eventually married Joanna Boom (Elias, op.cit. p. 976). Jean van Geel II paid a tax of 500 f. in 1631, living on the Herengracht (Kohier, fol. 86, p. 21). On 19 April 1636, Jean van Geel II, together with 30 other merchants, testified to the credit-worthiness of the merchant Adriaen van Ackerlaeck (NA 695A, film 4821). Jan (or Hans) II was the brother-in-law of Jacques Verbeeck, whose goods were auctioned off in this sale (he had married Catelijne van Geel, who had died before 1609), and the brother of Constantia van Geel (as well as of Daniel van Geel, already cited (Kam, Waar was dat huis in de Warmoesstraat? 1968 37/1, p. 386). On 16 January 1618, the children and heirs of Hans van Geel (I) offered for sale the house de Fortuyn on the Warmoesstraat for 16,200 f. On 7 May of the same year, Daniel and Jan van Geel (II), for themselves, and with a procuration from Leenard Sweerts (qv notes to R 29288), married to their sister Constantia van Geel, sold the house De Fortuyn to Adriaen Bormans (Kam, op.cit. p. 384). After the death of Leenard Sweerts, she remarried with Johan van Toll (1596-bef. 1653) on 4 September 1626 (communicated by Marten Jan Bok). On 16 April 1628, Jean van Geel II and Elisabet Lampsins had their son Daniel baptized in the N.K. (DTB 40/447). Beside Daniel (of R 31393) just cited, Hans(II), Pieter (of R 31692), and Maximiliaen (of R 21282) van Geel were all sons of Hans van Geel I. Clara Schurmans was the wife of Maximiliaen van Geel. On 16 December 1613, Joan (alias Hans) van Geel (II) and other participants in the V.O.C. (of which he was one of the directors) made a deposition regarding the V.O.C. (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, p. 102.).

Abraham de Visscher I was the son of Gillis de Visscher and of Barbra Blommaert and the brother of Annde Visscher who married Quintin Jacobsz. Erasmus de Visscher was Gillis's brother (Nederlandsche Leeuw 68(1951), col.30). He invested, 4,000 f. in the first subscription for V.O.C. shares. On 20 July 1633, Angneta, Sara and Hester Jacobs were said to have borrowed 2,792 f. from Abraham de Visscher II. A sentence of the Hooge Radt pursuant to a suit between Cornelia Coeymans and the sisters was cited in the house of Abraham Anthonisz. living in the Nes (NA 910, film 1146, Not. Eyloff). Abraham de Visscher II (1605-1667) spent some time in Emden before migrating to Amsterdam, where he was fist noted in 1627, when he gave Gysbert Dionijs a procuration to act on his behalf in Moscovy (NA 642, film 4953, folio 160 and Gelderblom, Prosopographic Data Base and Zuid-Nederlandse kooplieden, p. 317). He married Machteld Bas in 1632. She died in 1681 (Amsterdammers geportretteerd; Kopstukken 1600-1800 (N. Middelkop ed.), Exh. Cat. 2002/2003,, p. 93). On 9 April 1636, Abraham de Visscher II gave Gysbert Dionijs power of attorney to request an accounting from Joost van Bogaert and, in the absence of Lucas Metzu, to act on his behalf in connection with his share in the ship t lant van beloften which had sailed to Brazil (NA 642, folio 160-1).
