BuyerElias van Ceulen
Buyer FamilyCeulen (Cuelen), Elias van (I)
Buyer NotesElias van Ceulen, the husband of Susanna Pijnappel, was the son-in-law of Guilliam Petiteau and Aeltge Pijnappel. Elias van Ceulen bought lots for 7 f. 4 st. in the Haarlem lottery of 1606. He was then living in the Vergulde Swaen (GAA, 123/69 F 905.) On 15 August 1609, Elias van Ceulen had notary Meerhout notify Jan Hendricx Rotgans that he had sold the V.O.C. for 41 percent above par. But Rotgans had apparently failed to get a guarantor via the broker Balthasar Gerritsz. Jan Hendricksz. Rotgans, of Alkmaar, was the brother-in-law of Jan Claesz. Vierhuysen of R 28941. Balthasar Geerardsz. or Gerritsz. was the grandfather of the painter Johannes Vermeer (NA 209, fol. 38vo). On 7 June 1613, Elias van Keulen (signs Cuelen) Niclaszone, from Dordrecht, 28 years old, living on the O.Z. Achterburchwal, assisted by his uncle Abraham van Kuelen (Ceulen), was betrothed to Susanna Pynappel, from den Bosch, 28, living op den Dam, assisted by her uncle Ambrosius Kemp (DTB 417/147.) Ambrosius Kemp, a leather merchant, was the uncle of Aeltge and Susanna Pijnappel, who were presumably sisters (see R 37055 and 37038). On 28 January 1624, Eljas van Cuelen and Susanna Pijnappels had their daughter Ester baptized in the O.K. in the presence of Marten Hoffman Hermansz. (DTB 6/71). The broker Marten Hoffman (1583-1628) was the father of Geertruyd Hoffman who married Abraham Alewijn of R 25547. On 26 January 1625, Eljas van Cuelen and his wife Susanna Pijnappels had their daughter baptized in the O.K. in the presence of David Sijmonsz., bourgomaster of Leyden (DTB 6/105). Lenert Lenertsz. van Ceulen paid a tax of 150 f. on behalf of Elias van Ceulen, who lived on the O.Z. Achterburchwal (Kohier, fol. 148, p. 34). Jeremias Coesaert gave a deposition at the request of Lenert van Ceulen on 8 September 1637 regarding some rice that had apparently been sold at auction (NA 1466, film 1556). On 27 December 1633, Jan van Hensbergen, as husband and guardian of Elisabeth Pijnappel, Elias van Ceulen, as husband and guardian of Susanna Pijnappels, and Bartholomeus van Gennep (of R 27481), as husband of Agatha Pijnappels, all daughters and heirs of Aeltge Pijnappels (of INVNO 929) gave a procuration to a resident of Den Bosch to collect money due to them from the late Anthony Pijnappel and Margriete Brieven (NA 595, fol. 409, Not. Lamberti). On 10 August 1635, Elias van Ceulen gave the attorney Jan Geurtsz. a procuration to collect money over peepen (spun silk?) bought by Arnout van Liebergen de jonge, the son of Arnout van Liebergen I of R 30681 (NA 597, Not. Lamberti, fol. 59/60). On 23 February 1635, Louis Luce (of R 20393) gave Boudewijn Oudewater in Dordrecht power to transfer 250 f. to Elias van Ceulen de jonge (the son of Elias van Ceulen I) before the W.I.C. (NA 411, film 4953, fol. 200). On 1 april 1636, Elias van Ceulen de oude, presently in Amsterdam, gave a procuration to Elias van Ceulen de jonge to appear on his behalf before the V.O.C. and the W.I.C. (NA 772, Not. Verhey). On 6 May 1637, Elias van Ceulen (I?) affirmed that his house on the Bredestraet next to the St. Tonispoort, exiting unto the Houtegracht, had earlier belonged to Jan Tivaert (of R 20955), from whom he had bought it. Jan Thivaert had earlier rented the warehouse to those of the Jewish nation where they had held a synagogue. The tax on the warehouse had been 15 f. This high tax had been levied with respect to Jews (who were willing to rent it for a high price so that they might use it (geschiet is ten respect van de voors. Juden (die veel te mogen gebruycken in huyre betaelden)). Lucas Jacobsz. apparently did not think he could get such a high rent from any one else (NA 991, fol.130, Not. J. Bosch). On 19 December 1637, Elias van Ceulen (probably I) was insinuated regarding the insurance policy on a ship of Jan Albertsz. (NA 866, fol. 403, Not. van Zwieten). In 1644, Elias van Ceulen (probably II) was said to be the executor of the testament of the late Matthijs van Ceulen, who seems to have been his cousin (INVNO 165). In 1645, he signed a petition with other Amsterdam merchants calling for the maintenance of the currency regulation of 1622 (Van Dillen, Wisselbanken, R.G.P. 59(1925), p. 88).

Buyerde weduwe (Aeltge Pijnappel)
Buyer FamilyPijnappel, Aeltge
Buyer NotesOn 7 March 1606, Guillaume Petiteau, from Antwerp, 28 years old, living in the Nes, assisted by his parents Jeronimus Petiteau and Tanneken van Liesvelt, was betrothed to Aeltgen Pijnappels, from 'S Hertogenbosch, 24, living op den Dam, assisted by her uncle Ambrosius Kemp (DTB 411/687). On Ambrosius Kemp, see R 37055. On 1 May 1607, Guillaum Petiteau and Aeltje Pijnappels had their son Willem baptized in the N.K. in the presence of Marsellis Pijnappels (DTB 39/122). Petiteau suscribed to 600 f. in the first subscription for V.O.C. shares on behalf of Pieter Boll Cornelisz. from Haarlem. He was a merchant who did business in France (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, pp. 248-9.) Aeltien Pijnappels, the wife of Gielgaem Piettoes (sic), was buried on 10 October 1611 (DTB 1043/107). For the post-mortem sale of Aeltge Pijnappel and Guillaume Petiteau of 24 October 1613, see INVNO 929.

BuyerJacob de Serff
Buyer FamilySerff (Serf, Scherff), Jacob (Jacques) de
Buyer NotesOn 4 February 1621, Jacob Serf and his wife Hillegont Jans had their son Frederick baptized in the O.K. in the presence of Frederick van den Pollen and Jann[etken] de Vitre (DTB 5/343). He is probably identical with Jacques de Cherff, living on the Cingel, who paid a tax of 20 f. in 1631 (Kohier, fol. 63vo, p. 15). On 8 April 1634, Jacob de Serf, caffatier (weaver of caffa cloth), declared that he was ready to comply with the sentence of the aldermen to his charge and to the benefit of Abraham Cabiliau in the name of the poor of Colchester amounting to 380 f. plus interest. He further stated that there was no one to sign the receipt but he was still ready to pay. On 8 May, the attorney Jacob Bouman declared that he was ready to receive the money (NA 843, Not. Hoogeboom). On 2 September 1634, Lambert Verhaer, 50, consul of the Netherlands in Tunis, and Jacob de Serff, merchant, 43, testified at the request of Abraham van der Voort, delegated counsel from Franckendael, that they had well known Mary Reyniers, the wife of heer Abraham van der Voort, Samuel Reyniers, Susanna Reyniers, widow of Jacques van der Voort, and Caspar Reyniers, who had died in Franckendael, leaving two sons (NA 694B, film 4980, Not. J. Warnaerts). Twenty years, shortly after April 1614, Lambert Verhaer, who was said to be living in Constantinople, was intermediary in shipping the munificent gifts of the States General to the Sultan. It was said that he knew the taste of the court and proved very helpful in the transfer (N. de Roever in Oud Holland, 1(1883), p. 173). Abraham van der Voort, at whose request the above deposition was made, is not clearly identical with either Abraham van der Voort Aertsz. or Abraham van der Voort Willemsz. cited in the NOTES to R 32595. He may be a third person with this name. On 5 October 1637, Jacob de Cerf, silk cloth merchant, requested a deposition from the jeweler (and silversmith) Pieter ter Haer, 42, who declared that he had come to Cerf with a string of 40 pearls and various sorts of pearls costing 10 st. per pearl (NA 948, film 1171, Not. Benedict Baddel). On 10 June 1638, Jacques de Scherf, 49, made a declaration at the request of Daniel Roelants and of Jacob Verschuijr concerning certain goods that Aeltge Jans was supposed to sell (NA 696A, film 4982). Daniel Roelants was the brother of Elisabeth Rulandt (Roelants), the wife of Johannes Wickevoort of R 24559. On 24 January 1639, the lumber dealer and master carpenter Jacob Jansz. Pijl had notary Oly insinuate Jacques de Cherff and his wife concerning Cherff's failure to pay Pijl's wages on the work he had done in repairs on Cherff's house in the Breestraet. Pijl had obtained a court order to sell the house to obtain payment. He now proposed to go ahead with the sale of the house. Sherff's wife answered that she did not have the papers of the house (NA 1498).

Buyer FamilyHarmensz., Thys
Buyer NotesThe buyer may be the individual named in the following deposition. On 28 July 1637, Annetge Gerrits, wife of Thys Harmensz., asked Rominus Mathijsz., coffinmaker or joiner (kistemaecker), 50, and Gerrit Dircksz., knifemaker, 40, to testify that, in all the years of her marriage with Thys Harmensz. she had conducted herself as befits an honest wife. The rest of the deposition is more or less illegible but it may be that she had treated his children as she would have her own (NA 487, fol 35, Not. E. Cocq). Note, however, that a skipper of the same name This Harmansz. was the owner of the goods in INVNO 459, who is probably not identical with the individual named above married to Annetge Gerrits.

BuyerAmbrosius Kemp
Buyer FamilyKemp, Ambrosius (I)
Buyer NotesThe buyer was a merchant, originally from 's Hertogenbosch, first noted in Amsterdam in 1592 (Gelderblom, Zuid-Nederlandse kooplieden, p. 305). He was the uncle of Aeltge Pijnappel, the widow of Guillaume Petiteau, of R 37038 and of the present sale . (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, p. 249.) He dealt in Spanish leather (see the deposition of 13 June 1598 in Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P. 69(1929), p. 563.) On 19 April 1593, Ambrosius Kemp I and Maeicke Kemp had their daughter Saerke baptized in the N.K. in the presence of her godmother Maeijcke Slychers (DTB 38/292). On 19 July 1595, Ambrosijus Kemp and Maeijcke Jans had their daughter Suanna baptized in the same church in the presence of Phylips Gerritsz. and Maijcken Moercourt (DTB 38/426). Ambrosius Kemp II seems to have been the nephew of Ambrosius Kemp I. In 1637, Sara Kemp assisted her brother Ambrosius Kemp (II) upon his betrothal to Geertruyt Hooft. She herself was married to Anthony Hooft. On 20 January 1639, Ambrosius Kemp and Juffr. Sara Kemp, widow of Anthony Hooft, insinuated Abraham van Eynthoven (possibly of INVNO 945), concerning the guardianship of certain children (either Sara or Willem Kemp's). Abraham Anthonisz. (of R 20033) was a guardian of said children when they were still of minor age. Susanna Kemp, baptized in 1595 (see above), married the diamond cutter Hans Naghels from Breda in 1618 (Briels, Zuidnederlandse immigratie, p. 188). On 30 March 1616, the jeweler Francois Strick declared that shortly beforehand 36 raw diamonds which he had resold to Hans Naghels, jeweler. On inspection, the diamonds turned out not to be oriental diamonds (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.P.G. 78(1933), p. 151). Ambrosius Kemp I was one of the collectors in Amsterdam for the Haarlem lottery of 1606. On 14 January 1606, the painters Hans van de Velde (of R 30502 of Montias2) and Jan Basse (of R 7637), declared at the request of Christiaen Maeur that they had gone to the house of Ambrosius Kemp (I), merchant in Amsterdam, and that they had inspected there a painting commonly called a Salvator, painted on canvas, and that, in their best judgement, the painting was worth six pounds Flemish (36 f.) (Briels, Vlaamse schilders, p. 391, citing NA 56, fol. 695). In 1613,Ambrosius Kemp (I) was a member of the Rederijkerskamer 't Wit Lavendel (G. Kalff, Geschiedenis der Nederlandsche letterkunde, vol. 4, p. 60). On 20 April 1618, Ambrosijus Kemp, living in the Warmoesstraet in De Vergulde Tooren, was buried. A payment of 8 f. was made to the church (DTB 1044/35vo.). On 1 July 1621, Gillis Nagels, silk cloth merchant, presented his daughter before the Orphan Chamber and brought in 2000 f. for her mother's inheritance in addition to the inheritance she was entitled to from her grandfather Ambrosius Kemp (WK 5073/789, fol. 182vo.) Gillis Nagels must be related to the diamond cutter Hans Naghels who married Ambrosius's daughter Susanna in 1618.
