history In addition to being an art collector, Tannahill was a trustee of the Detroit Institute of Art's Founders Society, served on the Detroit Arts Commission, and departartment store heir (J.L. Hudson department store).

Tannahill collected 19th- and 20th-century paintings, sculptures and works on paper included French eighteenth-century silver, decorative, African and Pre-Columbian art. His collection included work by Corot, Cezanne, Gauguin, Seurat, Degas, Renoir, Picasso, Matisse, Modigliani, Van Gogh, Monet, Roualt, Jaun Gris, Paul Klee, John Marin and Georgia O'Keeffe.

He was a supporter of Mexican muralist Diego Rivera.
