William Collins Whitney was a collector, lawyer, horseman, businessman, financier and political leader (United States Secretary of the Navy). Whitney's collection included decorative arts of fifteenth and sixteenth Centuries, two portrait by Van Dyck (Charles I and Willem de Villiers, Vicomte Grandisson), a bronze gate from the Doria Palace at Rome, silver hanging lamp, paintings attributed to Pinturicchio, Millet's "The Sowers", architectural carvings from palaces and cathedrals, Italian primitives, Persian rugs, tapestries and embroideries. |
