Byron Company (24,174 images)

For half a century, the Byron Company (1892-1942) was one of New York City's preeminent commercial photography studios. Two major areas of specialization - stage and ship photography - provided steady work for the firm while it pursued thousands of other commissions. Important subjects include New York’s social elites, street scenes, sports, buildings, and workplaces.

Biographical note
Whitney practiced law in New York City, where he was active in the movement against the Tweed ring. His career also included terms as corporate counsel (1875-1882) and Secretary of the U.S. Navy (1885-1889).

Whitney’s service as corporation counsel in the New York (N.Y.) Law Dept. and as U.S. secretary of the navy in the first Grover Cleveland presidential administration.

Documents his work in the modernization of the U.S. Navy and his fight against political corruption and fraud in New York, N.Y., primarily in relation to Tammany Hall and the Tweed Ring. Subjects include New York city and state politics; the Democratic Party (N.Y); national politics; and foreign relations.

Other subjects include Grover Cleveland’s nomination and election as New York state governor and U.S. president; presidential campaigns, 1884-1896; bimetallism; silver question; tariff; social life in New York, N.Y., and Washington, D.C.; horse racing: yachting: and Whitney family affairs.

Includes six scrapbooks containing photographs from the Lady Franklin Bay Expedition (1881-1884) led by A.W. Greely.

descriptionThe papers of William E. Russell, 1846-1920, the thirty-third governor of Massachusetts consist of twenty-four archival boxes of loose manuscripts and 31 bound volumes of letterbooks and scrapbooks.

The collection covers Russell’s career as mayor of Cambridge, Massachusetts, 1885-1889, and governor, 1891-1894, his campaign for reduction of the tariff on raw materials and his unsuccessful bid for the Democratic Presidential nomination in 1896. The papers also contain material on the silver question and on the William E. Russell Democratic Club of Massachusetts. Important correspondents include: Russell’s wife, Margaret Manning Swan Russell; his father, Charles Theodore Russell; his brother, Charles Theodore Russell, Jr.; Edward Atkinson, Gamaliel Bradford, Grover Cleveland, Patrick A.
