J. J. Haverty was an art collector, patron, businessman, founder of Haverty Furniture Co., president of the Rhodes-Haverty Investment Company and Haverty Realty and Investment Company, and director of the First National Bank of Atlanta. Haverty served as chairman of the Atlanta Art Commission and the board of trustees of the High Museum of Art. He was a member of the Painters and Sculptures Gallery Association, Inc., of NYC; American Federation of Arts, Washington, DC; Society of Medalists, NYC; Southern States Art League; Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, TX; Telfair Academy of Arts and Sciences, Savannah; New York Southern Society and Liturgical Arts Society. His clubs included the Capital City, Piedmont Driving and The Old Guard of Atlanta. Haverty's collection included work by, among others, Mary Cassatt, William Merritt Chase, Thomas Gainsborough, Childe Hassam, Joshua Reynolds, John S. Sargent, J H Twachtman, J. Alden Weir, and Henry O. Tanner. |
