description | These papers consist of letters, documents, and scrapbooks on members of the Haverty family, the Rhodes - Haverty Furniture Co., the Haverty Furniture Co. Bio/History: Thomas Haverty came from Ireland to Atlanta in 1858. His son J. J. Haverty started the Haverty Furniture Co. in 1885. Between 1889-1909 Haverty went into partnership with A. G. Rhodes in the Rhodes - Haverty Furniture Co. J. J. Haverty's son, Clarence Haverty and grandson, Rawson Haverty continued the company. Clarence Haverty was elected president of the National Retail Furniture Association in 1943. Rawson Haverty served as Chairman of the Board of Directors of MARTA, 1969-1970. The Havertys were related to the Rawson and Munnerlyn families. |
