Shaw was a businessman, hotel proprietor (Grand Union Hotel), collector and patron of American Art. Shaw was a member of the Society of American Artists, and the National Academy of Design, Lotos, Union League, National Art (Vice president and served on the board of trustees) and Salmagundi Clubs (awarded cash prizes for the best picture at the annual exhibitions). The bulk of Shaw's collection was sold in an auction by the American Art Galleries in 1926, the sale consisted of 210 paintings by 103 American artists, including work by William M Chase, Childe Hassam, Bruce Cranes, George Herbert McCord, Charles C Curran, Franklin de Haven, Theodore Robinson, Leonard Ochtman, Emil Carlsen, S M Laurence, J Francis Murphy, F Luis Mora, Albert L Groll, Charles W Eaton, and George Elmer Browne. |
