James Augustus Suydam was an art collector, patron and artist. He bequeathed his entire art collection to the National Academy in 1865. Suydam’s collection included work by John F. Kensett, Asher B. Durand, Frederic Edwin Church, Sanford R. Gifford, Eastman Johnson, Albert Flamm, Jasper Cropsey, Andreas Achenbach, Thomas Hicks, George Henry Boughton, John George Brown Benjamin Champney, William P. W.
