descriptionLetters primarily concern subscriptions to the "Crayon," a journal devoted to the graphic arts and related literature edited by Durand and published by Stillman and Durand, New York.

Writing to Stillman are Christopher Pearse Cranch, James William Glass, and Richard Saltonstall Greenough; to Durand are Albert Bierstadt, George Fuller, James McDougal Hart (2), Frank Blackwell Mayer, Larkin Mead, Erastus Dow Palmer, Leonard Wells Volk, and John Quincy Adams Ward; and to both Durand and Stillman are Jervis McEntee, Thomas Prichard Rossiter, and James Suydam.

Organization:
Letters have been merged with other artists' letters and prints in the letterbooks. Letters have been merged alphabetically with other artists' letters, and are scattered throughout the letterbooks.

acquisition informationThe letters were collected by Charles Henry Hart and presumably compiled by him the the 2 v. "History of Art in America as Told in a Remarkable Collection of Autograph Letters and Documents of Celebrated American Artists of the Eighteenth, Nineteeth and Twentieth Century." Other letters in the volumes are written to various people, and have been described in separate catalog records under the name of the person to whom the letters have been addressed, including Thomas Benedict Clarke, Charles Henry Hart, Charles Lanman, John Trumbull, and one under the title Miscellaneous Artists Letters.
