Frederic De Peyster (1796-1882) was a New York lawyer, graduate of Columbia College, art and rare book collector, president of the New-York Historical Society (1864-67, 1875-1882) and the New York Society Library. De Peyster was married to Mary Justina, the daughter of Hon. John Watts. De Peyster’s collection included sculpture and painting by, among others, Thomas Crawford, Paul L'Ouvrier, G. Gerhard, and Charles Wilson Peale. He also owned 14 oil paintings, The Incas of Peru, which were said to have been the originals engraved for the work of Herrera "Historia general de los Hechos de los Castellanos" published in the beginning of the 17th century (1601-16). |
