description | Minutes of the Board of Trustees and copies of a few other documents concerning the beginnings of the Home for Disabled Soldiers in New York City (1863-1866). Trustees included Theodore Roosevelt, James Lenox, Benjamin H. Field, Frederic De Peyster, Andrew Warner, Frank Moore, Gen. Daniel Butterfield, and others. The final minutes in this volume report that a committee was being formed to look further into the feasability of the home after trustees heard discouraging news about similar projects. description | Journal, May 4, 1812 - July 11, 1815, kept at the Tontine Coffee-House, listing the arrival of ships at New York, including the vessel's name, master, port of departure, number of days out, and destination when not New York. Sometimes the cargo and consignee are given. The journal also includes notes on the weather and the time of high water, as well as other relevant information, such as intelligence of sighting, captures, and losses of ships, and general news related to the progress of the war and the blockade of New York. There is a printed summons laid in, dated April 11, 1879, naming Frederic de Peyster and William T. Horn as plaintiffs, relating to their claim to the Tontine Coffee-House as sole survivors of the tontine. They consist of one volume of minutes of meetings of the subscribers to the Tontine Coffee-House, 1791, 1793-1804, including the original proposal for the building and the tontine, the minutes of the organizing meeting, and the signatures of the original subscribers, as well as records of dividend payments, 1794-1803; one ledger, 1791-1816; one receipt book, 1792-1816; one account book detailing the expenses of building and furnishing the Tontine Coffee-House, 1791-1793; one account book, 1817-1871, of the Committee of the Tontine Coffee-House (after 1855, the Tontine Building); three volumes recording payments of annual dividends, 1805-1855; two volumes of copies of transfers of shares, usually on the death of the shareholder's nominee, 1797-1870; and three volumes of minutes of the Committee of the Tontine Coffee-House (after 1855, the Tontine Building), 1813-1871. description | These manuscripts span the years 1807 to 1946 and are comprised of correspondence of the artist, his wife and descendants, and others; a subscription book for the double elephant folio and octavo editions of Birds of America, 1826-ca. 1845; and other miscellaneous papers. The correspondence is divided between John James Audubon and his wife, Lucy Bakewell Audubon. Topics covered in the artist's correspondence, 1807-1841, includes the collection of specimens, the engraving and publication of his work, descriptions of birds, and financial matters. The bulk of Lucy Bakewell Audubon's letters are dated 1862-1863 and deal with the sale of the original watercolors of the Birds of America to the New-York Historical Society; a few personal letters to her granddaughter are included. description | Biographical sketches, copies of poems originally written 1816-1832, translations of Classical poetry, and a few original manuscripts, 1820-1822 and 1877-1878, of the members of the Literary Confederacy of New York City. Most of the poems were originally bound and circulated in manuscript volumes entitled "Aeronaut," and deposited in the library of Columbia College. This material was subsequently gathered and transcribed by Frederick De Peyster, who, in the 1870s, with the approbation of William Cullen Bryant, intended to publish it along with an introduction and biographical sketches of the contributing authors. The members of the Society were: Rev. James Wallis Eastburn, Rev. Manton Eastburn, John Neilson, Jr., Robert Charles Sands, and Richard Ray Ward. In addition to an abundance of transcribed materials, the collection includes three original Aeronaut manuscripts, two dated 1822 and one undated, and a manuscript of the 1820 funeral sermon preached on the occasion of the death of James W. Eastburn by Benjamin B. Smith, Accomack County, Virginia. Also included is a small quantity of correspondence regarding De Peyster's biographical and literary research and his plans to publish the compiled writings of the Literary Confederacy. They include: deeds, leases, accounts, legal opinions (including one by Cadwallader Colden) and other documents relating to the Tontine Coffee-House and the land on which it stood; agreements with Ebenezer Storer and Edward Bardin, tenants of the coffee-house at different times; documents relating to the adjoining property, 120 Water Street; a sketch by John McComb of the Bar Room of the Tontine Coffee-House, and a section of the Coffee Room, with his estimate for proposed alterations; lists of nominees; assignments of shares; three copies of The Constitution and Nominations of the Subscribers to the Tontine Coffee-House (New-York: Printed in the Year 1796), one bearing the signature of Frederic de Peyster and annotated with dates of death of nominees; papers and accounts relating to the estate of George Bright; papers, accounts, and legal opinons (by Richard Harison, John Wells, William Slosson, and Peter Van Schaack) relating to the affairs of John Charlton, his widow Mary, and their respective estates, including some bills for her funeral expenses; an invitation card for a dinner held at the Tontine Coffee-House in 1796 by the Lieutenant Governor.
