titleAeronaut collection, 1820-1822, 1877-1878.
repositoryThe New-York Historical Society
descriptionBiographical sketches, copies of poems originally written 1816-1832, translations of Classical poetry, and a few original manuscripts, 1820-1822 and 1877-1878, of the members of the Literary Confederacy of New York City. Most of the poems were originally bound and circulated in manuscript volumes entitled "Aeronaut," and deposited in the library of Columbia College.

This material was subsequently gathered and transcribed by Frederick De Peyster, who, in the 1870s, with the approbation of William Cullen Bryant, intended to publish it along with an introduction and biographical sketches of the contributing authors.

The members of the Society were: Rev. James Wallis Eastburn, Rev. Manton Eastburn, John Neilson, Jr., Robert Charles Sands, and Richard Ray Ward. In addition to an abundance of transcribed materials, the collection includes three original Aeronaut manuscripts, two dated 1822 and one undated, and a manuscript of the 1820 funeral sermon preached on the occasion of the death of James W. Eastburn by Benjamin B. Smith, Accomack County, Virginia.

Also included is a small quantity of correspondence regarding De Peyster's biographical and literary research and his plans to publish the compiled writings of the Literary Confederacy.
