history William Barnes Bement (1817-1897) was an art collector, head of the Philadelphia machinery firm of Bement and Dougherty (Bement, Miles and Co, chairman of the Franklin Institute, and served on the board of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts from 1874 to his death in 1897.

In addition to collecting art Bement was a bibliophile and avid collector of minerals (10,000 minerals in his collection).

Egusquiza, G. Ferrari, T. Frère, L. Jiminez, B. C. Koekkoek, G. Koller, F. Kraus, C. Landelle, L. Leloir, I. Leon Y Escosura, R. Madrazo, J. L. E. Meissonier, H. Merle, Meyer Von Bremen, P. Michetti, A. Moreau, L. Mouchot, L. Olivie, L. Perrault, W. T. Richards, E. Richter, A. Schreyer, A. Siegert, L. Simmonetti, A. Stevens, H. Ten Kate, A. Toulmouche, C. Troyon, E. Verboeckhoven, J. G. Bement's art collection was sold via the American Art Galleries on February 27 and 28 1899, by the firm of Fischel, Adler and Schwartz.
