Texts by Charles M. Skinner, Brooklyn, N.Y. Illustrations by Frederick Gutekunst, Philadelphia, 1884.” The frontispiece is an engraved portrait of Bement. The volume contains about 20 photographs of Bement’s homes in Philadelphia, and on Lake George in New York. There are over one hundred photographs of works of art owned by Bement, with short texts for each. At the back there is a photograph of The Sagamore Hotel on Lake George, and one of Bement’s industrial works on Callowhill Street in Philadelphia. The book is stored with the files of biographical information on board members. The archives also houses Bement’s obituary, which appeared in The Public Ledger (this copy mis-inscribed 10/7/1899). Bement’s death is recorded in the PAFA Annual Report for 1897-98, page 17, as having taken place on October 6, 1897. BIOGRAPHY OF WILLIAM B. BEMENT: William Barnes Bement was born in New Hampshire, and throughout his life was engaged in the manufacture of tools. He founded the machine tool manufacturing firm of Bement, Miles and Co. He served on the board of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts from 1874 to his death in 1897, and on several of the standing committees of the board. In 1877 he lent over 20 works from his collection to the Academy annual exhibition. |
