Leland Stanford was an art collector, philanthropist, lawyer, politician and businessman. Early in the 1860s Stanford and three other Sacramento merchants Charles Crocker, Mark Hopkins, and Collis P. Huntington built the Central Pacific Railroad. Leland Stanford later became President of the Southern Pacific Railroad and Governor of California. In 1884, Leland and Jane founded Leland Stanford Jr. University in memory of their son. Stanford died June 21, 1893 during his second term as United States Senator. According to The Art Treasures of America, Stanford owned works by W. J. Beard, Belay, A. Bierstadt, H. C. Bispham, W. A. Bouguereau, Bouvier, W. Bradford, Chaigneau, P. C. Comte, W. F. H. De Haas, J. L. Gérôme, T. Hill, J. B. Irving, F. H. Kaemmerer, Wm. Keith, L. Knaus, Auguste Leloir, Meyer von Bremen, E. W. Perry, A. Piot, A. Toulmouche, E. Verboeckhoven, and Benjamin West. |
