| Buyer Notes | The buyer is the painter Pieter Codde. The identification would not be possible (since several individuals are known by this name) if it were not for the words swager van substituijt Haen. The substitute schout Haen was actually named Arend Elberts Schilt van Hoorn (born 1568/1569). Pieter Codde was the son of the paalknecht Jacob Codde of INVNO 951 (born 1567/1568 and buried on 25 November 1625). He, together with his sister Claer and his brother Jan Jacosz. bought silver at his father's sale (but not art). He was baptized on 11 December 1599 and was betrothed to Marijtje Arends van Hoorn (baptized in the O.K. on 31 March 1605) on 27 October 1623. She was the daughter of Substitute Haen. On 25 April 1624, Pieter Jacobsz., painter, and Maritje Arents had their daughter Clara baptized in the O.K. in the presence of Jacob Pietersz. (the painter's father) and Lubbert Dircks (Ch. Dozy, Pieter Codde de schilder en de dichter (Oud Holland 3(1884), p. 55-56 and p. 67). A paalknecht was a minor municipal job that involved the collection of an excise fee collected from boats that docked at the Nieuwe Brug near the Dam. On 1 July 1625, Louis du Pret (of R 20057), about 34 years old, presently Lieutenant in the service of the city of Venice, and Michiel van de Sande (painter), about 42, testified to the following facts at the request of Willem Duyster (painter) (the son of Cornelis Dirxsz., probably of R 22564). In the second day of Pentecoast last (1625), they had gathered in an inn called Meerhuysen, of which Barent van Someren (of R 20424) was the tenant. Pieter Codde had come in with his wife. He had talked with Duyster about a certain Pieter Raes, with whom he had had a dispute, at a time when I (Codde) was still your friend. Duyster had answered: You were not my friend and added, we still have a quarrel, which we can settle somewhere else. To which Codde had replied, As you will. Duyster then said, he (Codde) should come tomorrow with a wackere pedarm (a weapon with a blade), and, if he did not, he would hold him (Codde) for a louse (schelm). At this point, Codde hit Duster in the face with an earthenware pot, so that blood splattered over his (Duyster's) clothing, and he fainted. Codde then ran out to avoid further trouble (Oud Holland 6(1888), p. 101). Pieter Raes was presumably related to Catryna Raes, the wife of the painter Adriaen van Nieulandt (of R 20925). Pieter Codde was buried in the O.K. on 12 October 1678 (Dozy, op. cit. p. 67). | |
