Commentary | On 14 August 1650, Christiaen Walens and his wife Cornelia Jacott had their daughter Elisabeth baptized in the O.K. in the presence of Michiel Hoppesack (the son of Gysbrecht Hoppesack of R 32342 of Montias2) and of Susanna Walens (his sister) (DTB 8/280). He was the son of Moses Walens, who had died by 1650, and the nephew of the wealthy Salomon Walens, who lived on the Deventer Markt. On 7 March 1650, Salomon Walens passed his testament in which he made his two nephews, Nicolaes and Christiaen Walens, the sons of the late Moses Walens, his universal heirs. Salomon left to grandnephew Salomon Walens his (testator's) portrait done by Rembrandt. He left his house on the Deventer Markt to either Christiaen or Nicolaes Walens, with the proviso that whoever would acquire it would forfeit 20,000 f. from his inheritance. The house was actually acquired by Nicolaes and later by Nicolaes's daughter Susanna Maria Walens (1649-1676) who married Louis Wolters, the son of Joan Wolters of INVNO 138 (I. van Eeghen, Rembrandts portret van Salomon Walens Maandblad Amstelodamum 43(1956), p. 113). Balthasar Jacott (II), whose portrait is recorded in R 43675 of the present inventory, was presumably the brother of Cornelia Jacott and the brother-in-law of Christiaen Walens. Balthasar Jacott II, cloth merchant, is frequently mentioned in notarial acts concerning the cloth industry in the period 1623 to 1650. In one procuration, he was said to be the brother of Carel Jacott (29 March 1624). In another, dated 11 December 1631, he gave his age as 43 (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P. 78(1933), pp. 510 and 782). He may have been the son of Balthasar Jacott I, cloth merchant, born in Antwerp in 1558, who died in Amsterdam on 7 September 1614. He may also have been the father or the uncle of Jan Jacott, born in Amsterdam in 1631/162, married to Elisabeth Hoppesack, born in Amsterdam, also in 1632/1633, who died in July 1670. Their son Balthasar Jacott III was born in 1658/1659 (a year before this inventory was drawn up). For the family portrait of Jan Jacott and Elisabeth Hoppesack by Pieter de Hooch or Eglon van der Neer, see Nederlandsche Leeuw 75(1958), col. 308 and foll.) Both Balthasar Jacott and Nicolaes Walens stood as guarantors (sureties) for Christiaen Walens in his insolvency. | |
