Commentary | Jan Jansz. Aldebrant, tailor, married Anneke Jacobs, from Osnabrück, in 1648. He was apparently illiterate. Their children were baptized in the Lutheran Church. He lived in 1660 bij de Trippen on the Cloveniersburgwal (I. van Eegen, Jan van der Heyden als schilder Maandblad Amstelodamum 60(1973), p. 74). According to Ms. van Eeghen, he organized spurious executive sales to sell paintings, of which the present sale was one. On 5 March 1664, he appeared before the aldermen and acknowledged he owed various sums to Daniel Schellincks, Philips Wouwerman, Willem Romeyn, Jan Vermeer (probably of Haarlem), Jacob Ruysdael, Martin Tellier, Jan Pietersz. Sermis, Claes Burgers or Bourgois (painter), Jan Blanck, Adriaen van de Velde, the heirs of Josua Felbier, Jan van der Heyden, the widow of Harmen Elshoff, Willem van de Velde, Adam Coussenaer, Ernst Klenck, and Isaack Staets, totaling 1,671:13:-- f. on account of borrowed moneys. He sold the paintings belonging to these individuals in the Herenlogement for 2,286: 7:-- f. Daniel Schellincks, Philips Wouwerman, Jan Vermeer (of Haarlem), Jacob Ruysdael, Claes Bourgeois, Adriaen van de Velde, Jan van der Heyden, and Willem van de Velde (I or II) were painters. Jan Blanck may possibly be identical with the son of Harmen Janssen Blanck at whose request some goods were sold in 1626 (INVNO 992). On 28 March 1664, Jan Blanck, the widow Elshoff, Jan van der Heyden, Jacob van Ruysdael, Jan Pietersz. Sermes, Daniel Schellincks, Adriaen van de Velde, Martijn Tellier, and Abraham de Coussenaer appeared before Notary Oudthoorn and gave Alebrant a procuration to collect the sums they were owed from the Concierge (in charge of executive sales) (Van Eeghen, loc.cit., pp. 74-5). | |
