Commentary | Tullekens and Dans assessed the two collections independently. Tullekens's assessment came to a total of 5050 gulden, Dans's to 3255 gulden, including the Diogenes by Jordaens. Gertruyd Fensel, the widow of Everhard Klenck, was assisted in this exchange by Johannes de Vogelaer (see below) and by her eldest son Johannes Klenck. According to Elias (Vroedschap van Amsterdam, p. 565), Everhard Klenck's christian names were George Everhard. He married Geertruid Fenzel on 28 May 1619 and died between 1643 and 1646. He was at first the factoor (representative) of Marcus de Vogelaer I (of R 23422) and of his brother Jasper in Russia but, as Isaack Massa wrote to the Tsar Fiodor Mikhalievich, he became nearly as rich, trading on his own, as were his former bosses (Jaarboek Amstelodamum 34(1937), p. 66). His son Joannes mentioned in the INTRO (born in 1620, died after 1668) was the brother-in-law of Henrick Hoochkamer of INVNO 482. He gave lectures on morality in the Atheneum Illustre in Amsterdam. He was raised to knighthood by Charles II of England. Josias Tulkens and Dirck van Dans were both wine dealers, the former in Bordeaux, the latter in Noach in 1619 (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven, R.G.P. 78(1933) p. 341) In 1606, Josias Tullekens, living by the Bantammersbrug, bought lots for 1 f. 16 st. in the Haarlem lottery (GAA, 31/37 F 251). On 25 October 1625, there appeared before the commissaries for marriage of Amsterdam, Joost Tullekens, the father of Josias Tullekens, Govert Sybrantsz., and Dirck van Dans, neve of the aforenamed Josias Tullekens, and showed the wedding contract that they had signed between Josias Tullekens and Elisabeth van Meurs, living in Bommel. The marriage itself was to take place in Bommel (DTB 763/74). On 17 July 1626, Josias Tulkens was a regerende Gecommitteerde of the wine dealers' guild or confrerie, and Dirck van Dans was one of its members. In a document of that date, they specified the terms of payment for a group portrait of members of the Confrerie by Niclaes Elias (Pickenoy) (Oud Holland, 4 (1886), pp. 85-6). On 27 August 1627, Willem Hendricksz., 63, Outgert Pietersz. Spiegel, 53, Reynier van Buuren, 60, Isaack van Gherwen, 47, Dirck van Dans, 43, and Jan Pietersz. Delft, 41, all six wine dealers, declared that it has for long been customary for the farmer of the wine excise to notify a day in advance the time he would come to gauge a dealer's wine stock (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.P.G. 78(1933), p. 631). On 4 November 1635, Josias Tulckens, merchant, 43 years old, declared at the request of Isaack Bernarts (of R 33620 of Montias2), likewise merchant, that the requirant (Bernarts) had bought merchandise from him (Tulckens) (NA 695B, Not. J. Warnaerts). On 4 November 1637, the surgeon Barent Jacobsz. (of R 32593 of Montias2) testified that he had sailed in the previous April to Sumatra on the ship de Revenge along with Jan van Dans (perhaps a brother of Dirck van Dans) and that this Jan van Dans had taken sick and died. From Sumatra, the ship had sailed to Persia (NA 635B, film 4982). On 6 November 1641, an inventory was made of certain furniture and other things belonging to Sr. Josias Tullekens, which had recently been used by Jan Romael, sculptor. There was no art among the listed items (NA 413, film 1381, Not. F. Bruyning). |
