CommentaryIn 1618, Jan Bus made for Jan Osborn an excellent case for a mirror (Prijst de lijst, Exh. Cat., Rijksmuseum, p. 31). On 5 March 1633, Jan Willemsz. Bus, ebony worker, took the son of a widow, likewise ebony worker, as his apprentice for two years. Bus will give his apprentice 10 stuivers per week the first year and a pair of hose and 11 stuivers the second year, also with a pair of hose (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven 144(1974), p. 9). Jan Willemsz. Busch bought frames at the auction sale of the framemaker Arent Jansz. on 14 August 1636, at which time he was living on the Molsteech on the O.Z. (INVNO 836). This was also the address he gave when he remarried. On 6 November 1648, Jan Willemsz. Bus, from Weesp, widower of Claesje Willems, living in the Molsteeg, ebony worker, was betrothed to Catharina van Dulken, from Reenen, widow of Pieter van Nieulant, living in the Pijlsteeg (DTB 466/223). Pieter van Nieulant, born about 1609, was the son of Joris van Nieulant, pen seller, who was apparently the brother of the painter Adriaen van Nieulandt, and of Anna de Clerck. Adriaen van Nieulandt attended the baptism of Elisabeth, the daughter of Joris van Nieulant and Anna de Clerck on 12 March 1634 (Oud Holland 3(1885), p.236). On 15 May 1650, Jan Willemsz. Bus and Katalijntje van Dulken had their son Guillem baptized in the N.K. in the presence of Temmes van Hoeckheest (DTB 43/144). In additions to frames, Bus made coffins and other wooden objects (Oud Holland 33(1915), pp. 88-9). He may be identical with the witwercker (white wood worker) of R 26595 of Montias2. The frames in the inventory were assessed at 12 stuivers a piece by the dean and the headmen of the St. Josephs guild. These were found in the shop and in the attic of the house of the deceased.
