| Commentary | Jan (or Johannes) Sandra I, widower of Susanna de Mareez I at the time of his death, was a merchant dealing in coarse cloth, originally from Doornik. He became a citizen of Amsterdam in 1583. He paid a tax of 18 f. in 1585. He married Susanna de Marez I (1567-1598), daughter of Jan de Marez I and of Jenne van Achterhoudt, in 1608. In 1611, his account at the Wisselbank numbered 2 folios. His daughter Elisabeth, 22 years old, presumably from an earlier marriage, was betrothed to Anthoni de Leeuw (of INVNO 569) on 20 November 1616. His son Mathijs Sandra had an account at the Wisselbank of 4 folios and was taxed 200 f. in 1631. Another son, Jan Sandra de jonge (II), married to Maria Fassin, had an account at the same bank of 2 folios in 1612 and 3 in 1620. His other children were named Elias, Susanna, Melchisedech, Daniel, and Janneken. Jan Sandra d'Oude invested 6000 f. in V.O.C. shares (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, p. 205). Melchisedech, cited in the INTRO, was married to Johanna Beck. He requested the inventory of Ida Beck, widow of the preacher Otto Badius, of INVNO 174. On 24 January 1625, Jan Sandra (II) for himself and also with a procuration from Matthijs Sandra, his brother, Melchisedech Sandra, for himself and as guardian of the children of Janneken Sandra, Jacques de Windt, besides Daniel, Gillis, and Elias Sandra, and Susanna Sandra, all children of Jan Sandra de oude and Susanna de Marez, sold a house on the Warmoesstraat to Jan Boddens, merchant, cited in the TEXT of R 239. Jacques de Windt must be related to Jan and Tanneken de Win(dt?), the children of Janneken Sandra, cited in the INTRO. The house was called 't huis van Dornick, formerly De Swan. On 17 June 1625, it was said that Jan Boddens owed 22,500 f. on the mortgage (Kam, Waar was dat huis in de Warmoesstraat? ?, 36/16). |
