Commentary | On 20 October 1633, Pieter Barentsz. van Solingen, ready to ship out as adelborst (cadet) on the ship Hooren to the East Indies drew up his testament. He left his brother Johannes Barendsz. a silver beaker worth 20 f. and to Barent Scheydemacker, his father, citizen of Solingen, and to Ursul Barents, his mother, their legitimate portions. He named as his universal heir Mathijs Neef from Solingen his good friend (NA 770, Not. Verhey). On 14 January 1651, Christiaen Roosell declared at the request of the wine dealer Pieter Barentsz. van Solingen that eight days ago, being the third of the month, he had been present together with Sr. de Hooge at the house of the petitioner (Pieter Barentsz.) when he had heard that Petrus van Hattingh, renowned painter, who was also at the house had tried several times to buy a painting by Jochem Wtewael, which hung in the petitioner's Groote Camer, and that he had finally bought it for 200 f., to be paid in 8 days, as Hattingh's handshake promised (NA, Notary Spitzhoff, cited in Bredius, Künstler-inventare, p. 521). Gerrit Coppit, to whom the debt corresponding to the items in the present inventory was due, was the swager of Harlent (Aarlant) Stacholder (Stachower), the wife of Hillebrant Ots Born, the brother of David Otsen of R 26691 of Montias2. On 13 September 1644, the heer Gerardus Coppit, juris doctor, assisted by his father Jan Gerritsz. Coppit, and his brother-in-law Reynier van Buren (II), the son of Reynier van Buren I of R 31437, drew up a pre-nuptial contract with Geertruyd van Dans, assisted by her father the honorable Dirck van Dans (of INVNO 205), her uncle Jan van Raed, the heer Everard Sluijskens, burgomaster of Arnhem, Arnout van Dans, receiver (of taxes) of Arnhem, and Anthony van Hattem, also her good friend (NA 1597, Not. W. Hasen). The wine dealer Hendrick van Solingen, cited in a deposition of 15 April 1633, was perhaps related to Pieter Barentsz. (NA 694B, Not. J. Warnaerts). |
