Commentary | On 20 October 1635, Mathijs Cornelissen Hals, born in Antwerp, assisted by Eleazer Swalmius, dominee, and by Jaquis (Jacques) van Kermten (of R 25264 of Montias2), signed a pre-nuptial contract with Maria de Bary, 26 years, assisted by her father Pieter de Bary and her mother Sara de Bari (born Mareez) and Jan de Baari (NA 579, fol. 519, Not. Lamberti). Four days later, Jaquis (Jacques) van Kermten, 36, and Cornelis Sladius, rector of the Groote School on the O.Z. declared at the request of Mathijs Hals that they had asked Jan de Marees Abrahamsz. (the son of Abraham de Marees de oude of INVNO 300) and Thielman van Beringen (the husband of Elisabeth de Marees, cited in the TEXT to R 216 of Montias1), as guardians over the minor children of Sara de Mareez, that they should be present at the signing of the marriage contract between Hals and Maria de Barij, daughter of Sara de Barij (nee de Marees) but that they had refused. One of them said, We have nothing against the young man, and when the mother comes to die, we will give the children the goods (NA 594, fol. 134, Not. Lamberti). The next day, 25 October, Mathys Cornelissen Hals, from Antwerp, gilder, no living parents, assisted by the preacher Eleasar Swalmius, was betrothed to Maria de Bary, assisted by her father Pieter de Bary and her mother Sara de Marees (Oud Holland 3(1885), p.147). On or about 29 November 1635, Matthijs Hals, as husband and guardian of Maria de Barij, procreated by Sara de Marees Abrahams, acknowledged owing 3,000 f. to his brother-in-law Jan de Barij, which he had borrowed at 5 percent interest (NA 594, fol. 172, Not. Lamberti). On 22 February 1636, Matthijs Hals, the nephew and one of the co-heirs of the late Louijs Rocourt (of INVNO 624) and presently one of the heirs of his sister Catharina Hals (who was also an heir of Rocourt), as well as being one of the heirs to the goods left by his brother Jan Hals (also one of the heirs of Rocourt) declared that in these qualities he had received out of the hands of Joost Passeniers (Postenier) (of R 23544 of Montias2, one of the buyers at the Rocourt sale), along with Abraham de Schilder (of R 20401) and Adriaen Imbrechts (of R 23627), executor of the testament of Louis Rocourt, the sum of 313 f. 7 st. He hereby thanked Passeniers (NA 521, film 6505, Not. Westfrisius). Matthijs Hals and Maria de Bary passed their testament on August 28, 1655 (Notary Lamberti). The fact that Hals was assisted, on the occasion of his marriage, by the well-known preacher Eleazar Swalmius, indicated that he was a Calvinist. (See also Oud Holland, vol. 3, 1885, p. 147). On Mathijs Hals's participation in the sale of a house on the Warmoesstraet, inherited from Abraham de Mareez de oude, on 13 September 1642, see R 27426 of Montias2. Maria de Bary, wife of Mathys Hals, coming from the Pijlsteegh, was buried on 4 November 1661 (Oud Holland 3(1885), p.147). Matthijs Hals was buried on 15 December 1661 (ibid. p. 148). | |
