CommentaryThe painter Karel van Savoy was born in Antwerp in 1620/1621. In 1635, he was Jan Cossier's pupil in Antwerp. In 1649 he became a citizen of Amsterdam. On 20 April 1649, Carel van Savoijen, from Antwerp, painter, 28, with the consent of his mother, living on the Dam, was betrothed to Catharina Wandelman, from Amsterdam, 18, assisted by Wouter Wandelman, her father, and Machteltje Wandelman, her mother, living on the Calverstraat (DTB 466/469). On 31 January 1659, Carel Savoij and Catharina Wandelman had a child baptized in a Catholic schuilkerk. The godparents were Walterus Kerckhorn and Anna Maegd (DTB 395/52). Carel van Savoy was buried in the N.K. on 24 January 1665. A sum of 8 f. was paid to the church on his behalf (Oud Holland 4(1886), p.73). Carel was the brother of the painter Philip van Savoy (1630-19 August 1664) who became a citizen of Amsterdam on 10 June 1661. Philip, assisted by his brother Carel, was betrothed to Jannetje Bisschops, widow of Reijer Vos, on 18 March 1661 (ibid.) Wouter Wandelman was the brother of Claes Wandelman of R 30408 of Montias2. On 24 July 1649, Karel van Savoy and his wife Cathalina Wandelmans passed their testament. On 27 March 1658, Carel Savoij acknowledged having borrowed 700 f. from Maria Vermeulen, spinster. He painted the portrait of Frans Coerten (of R 24544 of Montias2), which was engraved by Theodore Matham (J. de Maere and M. Wabbes, Illustrated Dictionary of 17th Century Flemish Painters, 1994, p. 351).
