CommentaryJohannes Verspreet was undoubtedly a close relative of Anthony Verspreet of R 25596 and of Hester Verspreet, the wife of Jean le Bleu of R 25596, as the TEXT of INVNO 171 (R 91 of Montias1) shows fairly conclusively, but he is not named among the children of Hans Verspreet I who were alive when the latter's inventory was taken (NA 562B, fol. 35, dated 1 April 1627). It was probably he, who, under the name Hans Verspreet (II), was cited as a sugar refiner in 1631 and who had some of his workmen testify about the damaged state of a shipment of raw sugar he had bought from the W.I.C. in 1636 (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P. 78(1933), p. 771 and 144(1974), p. 119). On 26 November 1637, Tomas Broen, 36, Johannes Verspreet, 34, Abraham Pelt (III), 41, and Dirck Bruggen, 62, all merchants declared at the request of Jan Raij (of R 20339 of Montias2) and Jacob Tiebbes, likewise merchants that they had been present at a public sale of shares (?) of the V.O.C. and could testify to the conditions of sale (NA 695B, film 4982, Not. J. Warnaerts, fol. 801). Abraham Pelt (III), who is also cited in the INTRO, was the second of this name, the son of Hans Pelt and the nephew of Abraham Pelt II (see R 20305 of Montias2). On 23 July 1647, Johannes Verspreet and his wife Gertruit Alderts had a child baptized in the O.K. (DTB 8/132). On Frans de Penijn II, apothecary, cited in the INTRO, who was related by marriage to the sugar refiner and art dealer Jan Thivaert, see R 20955 of Montias2. Another inventory of Johannes Verspreet was taken by the same notary on 13 December 1656 (NA 1129, fol. 308 and foll.)
