IntroductionOp den 18 octobris 1618 zijn vercocht dese naervolgende goederen achtergelaten bij Elbert Symonsz. Jonckheijn. Note some goods, but only one lot of art, were assessed by Barbara Jacobs and Reym Thijsdr. on 1, 2, 3, and 5 September 1618 and sold at the prices they had set (see lot of 0019[a] of INVNO 572 in Montias2). Some goods belonging to Jonckheijn were also sold on 20 September 1618. The inexpensive works of art in this preliminary sale are listed after the inventory of 18 October 1618.
CommentaryElbert Symonsz. Jonckheijn was betrothed on 19 January 1591 to Clasje Chijs (Sijs). He was 26 years old and living at the time on the O.Z. Voorburgwal. He was assisted by his father Symon Henricksz. and his uncle Claes Elbertsz. de Goyer. She was 27, lived in the Warmoesstraet and was assisted by Claes Pietersz. Overlander and her mother Trijn Claes (DTB 405/381). After the death of Clasje, he married Lysbeth van Buyl on 25 August 1602. She died in 1604. His third marriage was with Adriana Coolen (Cools, Coolhaes), widow of Lieve Lampsins (12 August 1608). She is the widow who was one of the buyers at her late husband's auction sale. Elbert Symonsz. was regent of the N.Z. Huiszittenhuis in 1603 (Wagenaar, Amsterdam, vol. 2, p. 266) and captain of a militia company which was painted in 1606, probably by Cornelis van der Voort (Oud Holland, 21(1903), p. 93). He was one of the founders of the V.O.C. in 1602, buying 12,000 f. of shares at the first subscription. At the second subscription in 1612, he was the largest subscriber, buying shares for the sum of 80,465 f.(Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, pp. 118 and 259). He freighted 28 ships between 1591 and 1602, 7 ships between 1603 and 1608, and 7 ships between 1609 and 1616 (IJzerman, Economisch-historisch Jaarboek 17(1931), p. 270; Winkelman, Bronnen voor de geschiedenis van het Oostzeehandel R.G.P. 185(1983), p. 629.) At his death, in 1618, he left a daughter Maria from his first marriage with Clasje Ghijs; a son Willem from his second marriage with Lysbeth Buyl (guardians Jacob Hooft, Claes van Buyl, and Hendrick Reynst); and two daughters, Aeltgen and Adriaentge from his third marriage with Adriana Cools (Coolhaes) (guardians Jacob Hooft and Hendrick Reynst). Aeltgen was 15 (baptized on 4 August 1609) and Adriaentge 10 (born 15 February 1615) on 7 May 1625 when the settlement of their inheritance was made in the Orphan Chamber. At this time, Willem Jonckheyn was entitled to 8000 f. for his mother's inheritance, and the other children received many obligations (WK 5073/789). After Jonckheijn's death, Adriana Cools (Coolhaes) remarried with Hans Rombouts (of INVNO 200), living on the Heregracht, widower of Susanna Niquet, on 3 September 1620 (DTB 425/54). Aeltje Jonckheyn, cited above, was betrothed to Jan Arentsz. Delft (of R 20727) on 3 November 1626. The age she gave on the occasion of her betrothal (30) would seem to be inconsistent with the one she was said to have in 1618 (15), but there can be no doubt that it is the same person (in view of the fact that her mother Adriana Coolhaes assisted her at the time).
