Commentary | Paulus de Bisschop, from London, was first married to Elisabeth van der Moere, from Antwerp on 18 August 1601 (see R 29011 of Montias2). On 22 May 1615, he remarried with Petronella van Baerle, the sister of David van Baerle. Petronella van Baerle was the daughter of Jacomina van Hoon, the widow of Jan van Baerle de oude (Jacomina assisted her at her marriage in 1615). On 16 March 1619, Hans van Loon (of R 7696 of Montias2), 42, Paulus Bisschop, 46, and Jan Gerritsz. Meerman, also 46, merchants, made a deposition about pastel at the request of Willem Jansz. Uijl (the brother of the painter Jan Jansz. Uijl) (NA 200, film 111, Not. J.F. Bruyning). She remarried with Everhard Backer de jonge on 29 October 1620 (DTB 425/112). Paulus Bisschop was a buyer in the sale organized by Valery van der Hoeve (or Houven) on 29 October 1608 (See Montias 2, R 29011). In 1608, Pauwels Biscop, along with a number of Amsterdam merchants, signed the petition calling for the revocation of the prohibition on depositing money or gold with cashiers (Van Dillen, Wisselbanken R.G.P. 59(1925), p. 16). The religion of Paulus Bisschop is inferred from the titles of the books that were listed in this inventory, which include: 1 Franse Bijbel, 1 sermon boeck van Calvinus in Frans, 1 Perkins in folio. The sermon boeck of Calvin was bought by David Baerle (INVNO 118). According to Briels, Paulus Bisschop was a full-fledged art dealer (Zuidnederlandse immigratie, p. 111). | |
