CommentaryPieter Jansen Heseman(s) was a painter, only one of whose paintings (an Allegory of Time, signed and dated 1620) has survived (Maandblad Amstelodamum 77(1990), p. 92). He was said to be 24 years old on 22 December 1617, living on the Coorsjespoortsteech, assisted by his father Jan Gerritsz. Puijt, when he was betrothed to Caterina Bisschop, also 24. She was assisted by her mother Martijntje Jans (DTB 422/101). She was the sister of Martin Bisschop (R 20535 in Montias2) and of Maria Bisschop who married Daniel van Breen (engraver of calligraphy) in 1641 (van Eeghen, loc. cit.) On 21 July 1624, Pieter Heseman and Cathalina Bisschop passed their testament. They were living on the Breestraet and also owned a house on the Singel, named 't Meulevelt, which they had inherited from their grandmother Tryntge Teunis. His father Jan Gerritsz. Puyt would be given the usufruct of the house on the Singel. Jan Gerritsz. and Caterina's mother Martyntge Jans would each be left a painting or four Flemish pounds (24 f.) (Bredius, Künstler-inventare, p. 108.) Heseman died before the end of 1624. Catharina Bisschop remarried with the engraver Philips Serwouters, a frequent buyer at Orphan Chamber auctions (R 22040). She was born ca. 1590 in Middelburg (Oud Holland, vol.4 (1885), p. 80). She signed the betrothal record, which took place in de Kerck, in a literate way. Philips Serwouters, who apparently abandoned engraving for book keeping soon after the marriage, died in 1650. After his death, Catharina went to live with Daniel van Breen and her sister Maria. She died 31 years after her first husband, in 1655. She was buried coming from the Huis Beverwijk (the Breen family came from Beverwijk) in the Angeliersgracht (Van Eeghen, op. cit. p. 93).
