Commentary | In 1606, Claes van Bourgonien, living in de Werelt in the Warmoesstraet, bought 7 lots for 1 f. 16 st. in the Haarlem lottery (GAA, 102/56 F 762). On 30 December 1607, Claes Harmensz. Bourgonje, medicinae doctor, 26, living in the Warmoesstraet, assisted by his father Harmen Jansz., was betrothed to Stijntje Joosten, 19, from Huisduynen, assisted by her mother Gertruij Goosens (DTB 666/105). He signed a petition to the Amsterdam Council, along with a number of other doctors in medicine and apothecaries, concerning the payments made by the city for various services rendered by these professionals (Jaarboek Amstelodamum 41(1947), p. 62). Doctor Bourgoigne was buried on 6 January 1621 (DTB 1053/341). On 10 January 1610, Nicolaes van Brogonien (sic), doctor in medicine, asked two other doctors and two advocates to testify to his good character (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P., 69(1929), p. 666.) On 28 December 1617, Franchoijs Harmensz. had bought a house de Gulden Werelt in the Warmoesstraet for 9,200 f. from Doctor Niclaes Bourgongie with Jan Harmensz. Bourgognie and Jannetge Harmens assisted by her uncle and guardian David Jansz. (GAA, NA 41, film 54). Jan Harmensz. Bourgognie was the brother of Claes Harmensz. Jannetge Harmens was their sister (see also, Kam, Waar was dat huis in de Warmoessstraat?, 36/13). Joost Bourgoigne, the other brother of Claes Bourgoigne was married to Geertruy Adriaens van Bancken (betrothal, 22 October 1639). She was the sister of Aeltje van Bancken who was betrothed to Joost van den Vondel's son, Joost van den Vondel de jonge, on 7 August 1643 ( Oud Holland 4(1886), pp. 116-7). Joost Bourgongie was also a good friend of the painter Balthasar van der Veen and of his wife Grietge Hendricks (van Bancken), who was named as a custodian over their goods in their testament of 12 April 1642 ( Oud Holland 12(1894), p. 58). He is probably identical with J. Burgundus who signed the Remonstrant petition of 1628. Another individual named Nicolaes Bourgogne, married to Maritgen Dircks, died before 1616 (NA 277, fol. 172, Not. van Banckem, Extracten). The surgeon Jan Bourgongne who was said to be 36 in a deposition of [?] December 1632, may have been the son of Claes Bourgoingne (NA 843, fol. c.455, Not. Hoogeboom). In the introduction to an Antwerp inventory of 21-24 November 1637, Johannes van Bourgoigne, doctor in medicine, who was related to (probably the brother of) Engelbert van Bourgoigne, husband of Maria Strijpen, and Anna van Bourgoigne, was said to be abroad (i.e. in Holland, enemy territory). The inventory included a portrait of Joncker Jan van Bourgoignen (Duverger, Antwerpse kunstinventarissen 4(1989), pp. 124-5). On 22 September 1655, Joost van den Vondel de jonge and Geert Ariaens (van Bancken), widow of Joost Bourgojne, declared that Christina van Huisduinen, widow of Dr. Nicolaes Bourgonje, last July 1644, had passed an obligation for 4,400 f. to benefit Joost van den Vondel, Joost Bourgonje and Cornelis Arentsz. Pos and that Pos had obtained 2,200 f. from it and the two others 1,100 f. each. On 14 July 1656, Grietje van Bancken, widow of Joost Bourgoigne, assisted by Barent Vogelesangh, her chosen guardian, with Hendrick (Isbrantsz.) de Bruyn, Pieter de Bruyn, and the aforesaid Barent Vogelesangh, each for a quarter, and Joost van den Vondel de ouden and Pieter Blesen, court-appointed guardians over the children left by Joost van den Vondel de jonge, sold a garden for 1,000 f. to Jacob Lammertsz. (Oud Holland 4(1886), p.127). Joost van den Vondel de jonge had been married to Aelje Adriaens van Bancken, the sister of Grietje Adriaens van Bancken (ibid. p. 128). On 12 November 1635, Sr. Pieter de Bruijn and his wife the honorable Maritge Jans drew up their testament. They named their children Francois, Jan, Margerita and Pieter, and their children's children (NA 21, fol. 19vo, Not. Salomon Hendricx). | |
